Shadowrun out of the shadows

The rumour has been circulating for more than a year now, but finally, after all the nudging and winking, it's official - Shadowrun is in development for Xbox 360 and PC.

Based on a very popular table-top RPG series, the videogame version will in fact take the form of a first-person shooter, set in a magical, cyberpunk-y near future of 2021. Development duties have fallen to FASA Studios, the creative brains behind MechWarrior and the enormously underrated Crimson Skies.

Plot-wise, it's about a tussle between a global corporation and a reawakened ancient power. You'll get to choose between both sides, either restoring order to society, or inviting chaotic anarchy with your magical powers.

There will be a nice blend of futuristic weaponry and magic, with such powers as x-ray cybernetic eyes, teleportation, distracting holograms, and assault rifles five times the size of Arnold Schwarzenegger's right bicep. Plus sci-fi and fantasy get a mixing too, with futuristic humans joined by elves, dwarves and trolls.

As for online promises, 360 and Windows Vista gamers will have a variety of modes and battles for up to 16 combatants. There are no release details as yet, but you can at least salivate over these first screens in the meantime.
