Dead Rising

As the Zombies stir and moan, we fire off a question salvo at Yutaka Haruki, producer of Dead Rising
Dead Rising is easily one of our favourite zombie fests, boasting fantastic amounts of undead-battering carnage, a full payload of hilarious weaponry and a tongue-in-cheek approach to the genre which recaptures some of those finest big-screen movie zombie hunting moments.

With the game getting a full release over in the US this week (although it shuffles into stores over here on 8 September) we managed to track down Yutaka Haruki, producer of the game and subject him to a CVG grilling. Here we learn why the dead have such enduring appeal, about the game's rather warped sense of humour, how it compares to Capcom's other hot property Res 5 and how Haruki-san would react if he were faced with an army of the undead...

Why do you think zombies have such an enduring appeal in videogames and movies?

Haruki-san: Many of us get a thrill or buzz from being scared, encountering the unexpected or being confronted by terrible creatures. Zombies can be particularly scary because they were human once. There is something terrifying about that, I think.

Dead Rising features tons of zombies on screen at once. In general, how many enemies can we expect to be up against at one time and why did you decide to take this route instead of the usual handful of opponents found in other horror-style games?

Haruki-san: Frank is almost constantly confronted by zombies as he explores the mall and we took this approach for a couple of reasons. Firstly we wanted to provide the gamer with a new type of experience - instead of taking on one or two zombies at a time, in Dead Rising, Frank has to face hundreds and therefore has to use new techniques. Secondly, this is Capcom's first title for the Xbox 360 and it is only with the power of this console that we have been able to realize this vision of hundreds of enemies on screen at one time.

Dead Rising takes place over a 72 hour game period - equalling roughly a couple of hours in real time. What inspired the decision to concentrate the game into several hours, rather than creating a more epic adventure?

Haruki-san: The couple of hours game time is just a rumour that's got out of hand. 72 hours will take at least 3.5 real life hours to get through, and that's only if you don't die. I would expect a realistic length of one play-through to be more like 10 hours. That said, there's still loads of replayability crammed in with different endings, 100s of NPCs to rescue and all the weapons. There's simply no way you could do even half of it on one play-through.

We've seen you can beat zombies to death with giant inflatable cactuses and place traffic cones on their heads. To what degree is comedy important in the game and what inspired the decision to move away from the more 'serious' type of survival horror game?

Haruki-san: It was always our intention to create a game that provided a completely different gameplay experience to Resident Evil. As you know RE5 is already in development and the series already has a very well established identity, so to have made a similar game would not have made sense. The team wanted to explore new areas, thereby challenging themselves and creating a new type of zombie action game. To this end, humour is hugely important in Dead Rising.

How important is the passage of time in the game? What are some of the major differences we can expect to see between exploration during the day and at night?

Haruki-san: Time is all-important as you will see. I don't want to spoil anything, but one of the main differences between night and day is the ferociousness of the zombies -- they are a lot more difficult to deal with by night.

What are some of your favourite 'weapons' in the game and which one would you most like at your side if you found yourself in a shopping mall over-run by zombies?

Haruki-san: My favourite is the sledgehammer or possibly the scythe -- great for extra PP [Prestige] points when beheading...

How have you used the next-gen power of the Xbox 360 in Dead Rising? What are some of your favourite aspects of the game which simply wouldn't have been possible to achieve on the previous generation of consoles?

Haruki-san: The number of zombies, as I've already talked about, would have been impossible to create on any other console; it was also important for us to ensure the zombies moved in groups and reacted cleverly to Frank's attempts to evade them. This 'swarm technology' requires a high level of calculation and is only possible thanks to the processing power of the 360.

We were also able to make the mall feel incredibly real by filling the shops with an incredible number of objects. If you go into the supermarket you do not simply see shelves of generic products, but individual items. It meant a lot of work for our designers and artists, but I feel it was well worth the effort.

We've seen some pretty nasty moments in the game trailer - do you think it's more acceptable to dish out this level of violence on enemies when they're non-human, such as the undead in Dead Rising, and how comfortable would you feel allowing players to snip off opponents' legs with sheers or skewer them with pipes if they were human? Do you think it's a developer's duty to enforce a line of what is and isn't morally acceptable when creating a game?

Haruki-san: I think the violent elements of Dead Rising need to be taken in context. The game is not a realistic representation, as is obvious from the story line, graphical style and use of humour, so in this respect I feel that there is not an issue. However, that said, we are conscious that the contents are not suitable for a younger audience which is why we worked closely with the ratings boards in all territories to ensure that Dead Rising received a rating that reflected its contents.

Finally, can you share any ideas you didn't get time to implement in Dead Rising? Can we keep our fingers crossed that these might appear in a sequel some day?

Haruki-san: I think we just about got everything in there, I hope you all enjoy it.

I'm really looking forward to this, especially since the demo.
Does anyone know why exactly we are forced to wait a month after the US to get this, when normally its 3 days?

I'm fairly unimpressed with Capcom's performance at the moment. First the p**s-poor "conversion" (read: horrible, unbalanced, laggy, virtually unplayable complete mess of a remake) of Street Fighter 2 on XBLA and now an inexplicable month-long wait for Dead Rising. This game and Lost Planet should make up for it though when they release.

Has anyone heard if Dead Rising is region-free? I know many Xbox 360 games are, and I hope Dead Rising joins them. I would definitely import.
I'll keep looking and post here if I find out.

I'm guessing that the reason for the longer delay than usual has something to do with Germany.

I think the German censors (very strict) arent happy with the game in it current state and want it to be censored. I guess thats why its been delayed a little for the Euro release.

And yeah SF2 is messed up on live. Im sure I got better performance in terms of online play with the SF collection on the xbox.

Yes thats most likely. I heard that the German Censors flat-out refused to give it a rating though, and that it wouldn't see release there at all.
If the delay is your fault then vielen dank, Deutschland. Hah - my first multilingual use of sarcasm.

SF2 on XBLA is also horrbly unbalanced in single player I think, the balance being:
Your chosen character at any given time = crap.
Everyone else = practically unbeatable.
I thought maybe I had gotten rusty with age, so I dragged my SNES out of retirement over the weekend. Beat Street Fighter 2 Turbo on normal with no problems. So why can't I get past fight 3 or 4 on XBLA? Maybe the increased difficulty was Capcom's way of adding longevity. In my opinion, it was Capcom's way of totally destroying the positive memories I had of the game, and doing me out of a tenner at the same time.

I just wished I'd waited to see what the reviewers said about SF2 before downloading the damm thing (or tried the demo 1st).

Even some of the sound effects are messed up. I get the feeling that some other company was tasked to port this over to Live.

But yeah, I thought I was rusty too since I got my ass kicked when playing single player. The crappy D-pad doesnt help either.

after reading the review on ign becuase the american version has been released i have to say truthfully im a little put off from game now, but i prob will still get it. But the reason i was put off is because its meant to really force you along the story. O ye and also you never now we might getter a lil better version because of an extra month wait. And am in the uk so no censored version for me hehe Very Happy
rabbit0147 on 8 Aug '06
Well hopefully no censored version...

Lets not forget Ninja Gaiden was censored in Europe. You could not decapitate (chop off heads, man my spelling sucks lately) enemies. This change was required for Germany I think but the rest of Europe got the censored version as well.
ramsingh1 on 8 Aug '06
including the uk? Surprised

I didn't know that! Germany stopped me from chopping heads off things?! Ich will not forgiven!

Censoring Dead Rising though... If they do that, will they even have a game left?
falloutwarchief on 9 Aug '06

Yes including the UK. Dig up some old Xbox mags to check out the reviews for the UK version. A big deal was made of it. Check out some review sites and see if they mention it.

I dont know if Ninja Gaiden Black was the same. I only played through the original.

Dead Rising should be ok. I mean hey, the demos out and that wasnt censored (was it?)

We're getting the whole thing, excessive violence and all:

"According to a Capcom spokesperson contacted by Eurogamer.net, the PAL version of Dead Rising will be just as violent as its North American counterpart. "Dead Rising's brilliant violence has been completely preserved for European audiences," he said.

The game currently faces an apparent (and confusing) "ban" in Germany. Dead Rising -- brilliant violence intact -- will arrive September 8 in Europe."
falloutwarchief on 10 Aug '06
Wey Hey!

Game looks class. Demo was a little short...It took longer to download the damm thing than play through it!

I just hope they dont go overboard on "microtransactions" (hate that word so much) such as buying new costumes/weapons.
ramsingh1 on 10 Aug '06

All they have to do is stick in some green blood and lose the decapitations.

I can't recall the game, but some of you older gamers might.. with better memory. There used to be a horror game if I recall, where you could change the color of the blood.. Or so it seems.. I also believe silent Hill had this feature.

Or they could just go with the common sense answer.. when people bleed, the blood on contact with air turns red. And we just can't change that. *Spokesman then could shrug his shoulders*

I think there have been many games that have used the "green blood and zombies" method of pleasing censors. Mortal Kombat 1 was one of them (the SNES version was changed to have green blood for Nintendo). And I remember Carmagedden (you know that car game on the PC) which had replaced poeple to "zombies".

House of the Dead on DC had green blood but a red blood option could be unlocked.
