Holy LEGO Batman!

Exclusive: The DC Comics Dark Knight is brick-ing it for another seminal Traveller's Tales Lego adventure!
The next licensed LEGO game from veteran UK developer, Traveller's Tales will be based on the massive DC Comics superhero, Batman, CVG can exclusively reveal today.

Just days prior to the release of the next entry in massively successful LEGO Star Wars series, CVG's investigative reports have learned that work has already begun on a franchise follow-up, staring the Caped Crusader in a block-busting adventure through a LEGO brick Gotham city.

No further details were offered from our sources, though we're sure that - considering how much fantastic fun the first two LEGO Star Wars games were - Batman's blocky-debut is certainly something to look forward to. While we would've probably opted for something more in the vein of LEGO Eastenders, the Dark Knight's deep universe and wide-array of characters and villains perfectly lends itself to the Lego spirit, and we're bursting to pilot a block-built Batmobile through the Gotham streets.

When we contacted Traveller's Tales the studio as expected declined to comment on LEGO Batman, although further delving led us to development director, Jonathan Smith who when asked about the game told us that considering the studio's long running partnership with LEGO, "we will definitely will be making more LEGO games in the future."

Exciting stuff indeed. We will of course shine the big, CVG spotlight skyward when more word on LEGO Batman reaches our ears.

lego star wars yeh gr8 but batman i dnt think so theres no demand for it

I agree, there's not the same appeal as starwars

No franchise is as big as Star Wars so the next LEGO game was never going to be as big a deal. But i'm quite interested in a Batman lego game. It will be cool to see their take on the gadgets anf the Batmobile. If I can play as Alfred i'm sold! LEGO Spiderman next, or even LEGo Mrs Doubtfire.

Batman is a bad choice in my opinion. There isn't a existing storyline strong enough to parody in the same style as Star Wars.

Indiana Jones was the obvious next step, and they must have thought of that. I wonder if Lucasbottom said no?
MadFruit on 8 Sep '06
That's kinda cool. In the future, I'd like to see Lego: Spidey, Indiana Jones, Matrix (that could be hilarious) and others I can't quite think of right now.

Yeah there all good choices. Back to the Future perhaps? Although I think they are mad not to a Transformers one!

Or maybe a Lego Vice City?

LEGO Superman Very Happy

Lego Matrix Trilogy gets my vote too. Lego Lord of the Rings would be utterly ace as well.

I think Traveller's Tales are just looking at francises that have only really had crap games made out of them, and making a great game to balance it out!

I'll buy it, but I agree that it seems an odd choice. Lego Indy would've been perfect.

Batman>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Star Wars

I love Batman. This could work really well. There are plenty of well known Batman stories. They could use the movies. Well not Forever and Robin. And there are a more than enough stories from the comic universe that can be used. Just because some of you dont much about the Batman comics and their stories doesnt mean there isnt a strong line up of stories to use.
Bryanee1983 on 8 Sep '06
Au contraire. I'm actually a huge Batman fan and am massively excited by this, but I can't quite see Batman Begins or War Games being good fodder for a Lego game.

Batman and Batman Returns would make great lego games. They're serious but with enough quirky bits to make it work and stuff to make fun of.

They could even include the 60's Batman film. That would be damn funny. Running around trying dispose of a bomb.

I've got to agree that Batman is a great choice for their second IP conversion. There is just a load of stuff ripe for the silly humour that the Lego games have brought to the Star Wars games, not to mention that Batman is probably one of the most popular comic brands about. I can't wait to see what Travellers Tales make of this.

Although I also agree that if the developer doesn’t get their hands on the Indy IP around the time the new film finally sees the light of day I’ll be very disappointed.

I dont think batmam is the best choice, lego X-men would be better, more character involved, dose'nt anyone want to know what wolverine would look like if he was lego?
johnnyrocket on 9 Sep '06
Not really. The X-Men suck overall.
Bryanee1983 on 10 Sep '06
Really happy about this, hopefully it's in the Adam West style! Laughing

Get the shark repelant batspray Robin!
maugrim2712 on 10 Sep '06
X-men kick batmans ass. He has some guy called robin who looks like he should be at some gay pride festival while the x-men load loads of fit women in tight leather, beat that.

In many respects that is exactly the point! Think about it; we're not talking about a dark adult exploration of a comic book world here, we're talking about a Lego game, and one that loves to poke fun at the franchise it assumes. That is exactly why Batman will be so great.
Dogen_D_Derrible on 10 Sep '06
im assuming they can only use exsiting Lego kits as bases for the games, i would of liked a game based on the Lego spider man sets more but i'm still looking forward to this

We need an open-ended Batman game like Spider-man 2 and Ultimate Spider-man (and soon, Superman Returns). Batman Begins had great voice acting and solid presentation. It looked and sounded good, but it was SUPER-linear. Batman could not do anything until he found the key to the forklift that would open the door.

The recent Spider-man games have done well, and been enjoyable. It’s not news to anyone that open, free-roaming games are popular—the recent GTA entries have been the most successful games in years, whether you agree with the moral content or not. Kids and adults alike have loved soaring through Manhattan’s skyscrapers and suburbs as Spider-man. The most common complaint? It’s too boring and repetitive to beat up the same thugs who steal purses or kids who lose their balloon.

Batman is perfectly poised to capitalize on these strengths and remedies all the weaknesses. Spider-man isn’t too bright; he just beats up the crooks he catches in the act. Batman does this too! But Batman is also a detective. He can work with, or against the police. He can spend a night prowling the streets looking for trouble, but he can also respond to the Bat-signal and receive “missions” from Commissioner Gordon.

He can find clues to track down major baddies, or catch thugs to interrogate for clues leading to major baddies. He has as solid an array of major villains as Spider-man, but lots more levels to pursue… instead of dumb purse-snatchers and Green Goblin, Batman has the Riddler, the Joker, purse-snatchers, the mafia (this alone has a game’s worth of potential challenges and missions), and everything in between.

Not to mention one of the best parts of a Batman game: VEHICLES. Batman can roam Gotham by rooftop, call the Batmobile to him by remote, fly through the concrete jungle in the Batwing, chase down escaping bank robbers, escape the Gotham PD and find his way back to Wayne Manor (a la Begins)… and he ever has a great lair. The Batcave could be a functional hub (Lego Star Wars) and also a trophy gallery. Add all this in with Batman’s gadgets, plot helpers like Alfred, the atmosphere of Gotham, and hey—Batman, especially in his latest movie, is all about using his own freedom and creativity to wage a war on crime and evil.

There you have it! Which Batman universe should it be set it? It would be easy enough to match it to the next movie, but my vote is for the Animated Series. It had the biggest breadth of style, characters, and stories. Please EA… an open-ended free-roaming Batman game has all the makings of an all-time great!
