The Darkness

Demons, violence and plenty of gore - we'll take two please. To go...
Birthdays are supposed to be fun. Generally speaking, they're meant to involve drinking, laughing, puking and shagging (if not necessarily in that order). But for Mafia hitman Jackie Estacado, 21st birthday celebrations were a fall into a barrel of disease-infected needles by comparison.

Turns out that when people in Jackie's family come of age they become possessed by a demonic force simply known as 'the Darkness'. Bad news, but the result is one of the most unique first-person shooters to hit PlayStation 3 this year. Sure, it's got all the gun-toting, grenade-lobbing action you'd expect from a shooter (the plot revolves around a feud between Jackie and his former Mafia bosses), but what other game lets you summon a pack of revolting little demons to help take out a patrol of corrupt police officers?

As well as the demon-spawning ability (which, as the title suggests, can only be done in the dark), Jackie also boasts two extra demon 'limbs'. These usually appear as black snakes that lash out at the enemy, but they can also take the form of super powerful, insect-like legs.

With huge, sprawling levels that you'll be able to freely travel back-and-forth across and a host of other demon abilities on tap, being an evil bastard is actually quite fun.
