Berlin-based publisher, Frogster Interactive has signed a deal with veteran UK developer, Bitmap Brothers to bring remakes of its classic retro-titles to PC in 2007.
The deal sees Frogster snatch the worldwide PC-rights for cult-classic Amiga titles, Speedball 2 and Chaos Engine, which it will release for PC in 2007 with development assistance from The Bitmap Brothers.
The futuristic sports game, Speedball 2 was originally released in 1988, snatching The Golden Joysticks Game of the Year award and subsequently appearing on nearly every relevant system thereafter. Chaos Theory also saw success in '93, apparently securing the "SEGA Award 1994 for Best Action Game".
Beyond this, no details were offered on how extensively the two retro classics are going to be tinkered, but we're promised announcements on gameplay details and online features soon.
Cool. There was a PC version of Speedball II so we'll have to see which way they go with this. A straight re-release wouldn't be much use but if they tie in online code, who knows.
I'm still annoyed that Speedball Arena vanished, though.

And me, was looking forward to this game for aaaages, still checked the bitmap bro's site up until a few months back (even tho it hadn't been updated in years)
Ah well, Speedball 2 still stands the test of time even now, gotta love emulation (since my A500+ bit the dust)
As long as they don't bugger it up with too much jiggery pokery and keep it simple (albeit with full 360 movement vice 8 directions).
Even better if they make it 'true' multiplayer and have a full team of real players per side (lol, who's gonna go in goal? Rush goalie anyone?).
I can see it now, do you build up your character as a forward, defender, midfielder, winger etc.. Of course, everyone will want to be a glory seeking striker, but then being a quality defender will make you a 'must have' player on anyone's team.
I'm so excited a small drop of wee has just leaked out
Trust me, SBA was doomed from the start, flawed concept, maybe now where we're getting towards having the amount of players around to do it (individuals would be playing each player remember?) then it may be more feasable. Even so, still don't like the concept.
Personally I want to have it as close to the original as possible but as Aircool_212 says, 360 movement plus online leagues and star player building / trade...
heheh, remember you could electrify the ball then pass it from winger to winger whilst taking out the keeper. Eventually, on came the medbots to cart him off....heheh
Yeah Xenon 2 is ace and the music is brilliant. I liked GODS and Magic Pockets as well, Gods was pretty hard though. Hopefully they remake them as well.
