In an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine, Hideo Kojima said, "The controls in MGS3 got a little complex, so you'll have a little more direct control in MGS4. That said, I miss the rumble and even now I hope it will come back."
Don't hold you breath as Sony got stung badly with the rumble technology it used in the past. As far as how MGS4 will use the motion-sensing technology, Kojima added, "We can't say how we'll use the motion-sensing functionality specifically but we'll use it for sure." Do you think he means they don't know yet?
To be honest, I think people will miss rumble more than they perhaps realise. I know I will.
Not being able to feel the thud of the ball as it hits the racket in Virtua Tennis 3, the recoil of a gun when you shoot in a first person shooter (or even when you get shot) or the rumble of the ground underneath you in Motor Storm is going to feel so strange, lifeless and, yes, disappointing. I think with rumble you tend to notice it more when it isn't there. I think Sony have made huge mistake omitting it from the SIXAXIS controller and all because they're too tight to settle up with Immersion.
If Nintendo can make a controller with rumble and motion-sensing technology then I'm quite sure Sony can despite what Phil "Hi, I'm a liar" Harrison says to the contrary.
If a multiformat game comes out on the PS3 and Xbox 360 then I'd consider the latter version first over Sony's gimmicky implentation of motion-sensing technology. Besides I'll soon have the Nintendo Wii so why would I go for second best?
(By the way, I do plan on buying a PS3 but only for its exclusive games. I don't, however, see it as my main gaming platform... I think that will continue to be the 360)
I'll miss it. I think that sony should let third parties like logitech make pads with rumble, and games still programmed to use it. Otherwise it will suck. I dont think the more triggery 2nd shoulder buttons will be good for PES either.
playing COD3 on my 360 & feeling every bullet u fire & all the explosions that go off around you, you realise how much of the expirence PS3 owners are gonna miss. I mean Gran truismo without rumble is not gran truismo, sorry but that just sucks
Considering on the credits of MGS2 and 3, they actually employed a 'rumble artist' (just completed 2 again, and watched credits ), its pretty obvious theyre dissappointed it doesnt have rumble.
I mean, on the massive cutscenes in 2 where you have to sit there for 10+ minutes, its the only way they have of connecting you with the story, a bit of rumble here n ther if snake shoots someone or if a metal gear starts walking near by.
If you have to sit there for the same 10+ minutes, only this time totally disconnected from the gameplay, with not even some rumbling to give you even a small sense of being ther, it could be a bit s**t.
Just remembered....i havent even mentioned the gameplay uses that rumble has in MGS. What about MGS3 where one of the people detectors used rumble - bigger rumble closer someone was.
Yup, MGS4 is really gonna be below par without rumble, they use it loads, more so than any other game i can think of
CVG wrote: "Don't hold you breath as Sony got stung badly with the rumble technology it used in the past."
Was it a case of they got stung or more they didnt want to pay for the technology that immersion created/patented?
All in all though its a shame that they gave up on rumble for now as it does help in some games. Not that i'll be getting a PS3 until they are more affordable.
Yer very valid points, i'm a massive MGS fan, i've got the 360 & apart from MGS4 have no intention of buying a PS3. I'm not against Sony i've always had playstations but there reason attitude has p**sed me off, Anyway i feel that Hideo is begining to feel a little confind in Sony, he's trying to branch out & it's just not there with Sony, the Online side of Substance he was excited about moving into on the PS2 was wasted. I'd love it if he moved away from MGS & Sony & started a new IP for the 360 & Live, it would be awesome to see what else he's capable of.
Well I managed to play on a PS3 today in my local CEX and was completely unimpressed. The pad feels waaaaayyyy to light and if there was rumble it would feel a little weightier (obviously). However I was playing on Resistance (insert 2nd part of title here) and shooting the aliens didn't have the same feel as it would on the 360 or Wii shooting loads of Germans in Call of Duty 3 (and btw graphically PS3 is very very very over hyped, probably not as the machine progresses in its age, but for now eek!, as good as a 360 not overly better). I prefer the Wii and 360 to be honest. I can't see the justification of the price, or the lack of exclusive titles, nothing is selling the Ps3 to me nothing at all. Shame that.

Aye i agree although not having played a PS3 yet i can only make judgements from screenshots and vids about graphics etc. I'm sure that the ps3 will at some point boast graphics above the 360's but as the wii and some pc games show " graphics do not maketh the game"
And no im not a msoft ninty or any kind of fan-boy im a gamer simple ( or just a simple gamer ).
CEX needs to be carefull having PS3's in the UK after Sony's rantings about grey importing the machione from other regions.
And if Kojima is feeling "confined" working so closely with sony he should have thought about that before jumping on the overhyped bandwagon that is the PS3

when did Kojima say he felt 'confined' working with sony?? and when exactly did he 'jump ship' to sony?? was it after the MSX? link pls?
Don't we all... Kojima has said that he only wants MGS4 to come out on PS3, despite most of the rest of Konami wanting it to come out on 360 as well, so they make loads a money
Hollywood said he had a felling that Kojima was feeling confined not once did I say that he said it himself, you really need to learn to read & then understand what people say.
It's like Sony went for all these excessive gadgets and gizmos, but left out the one, simple, and essential thing. The rumble. I don't love Sony, but I was a fan. I dislike Microsoft, but own (and like) my XBoxes. Confused? Yeh...i'm a little confused. As much as I hate Microsoft (for no apparent reason other than childish spite), I am gearing up to buy the 360...the PS3 can wait. It'll probably be a long, and patient wait. Just until MGS4 comes out...and FFXIII comes out. But really....2 games are the only things drawing me to a system. Get your game on Sony! Wassup?!?!
now...if there was rumble....I might've already bought a PS3! HA!
Hollywood said he had a felling that Kojima was feeling confined not once did I say that he said it himself, you really need to learn to read & then understand what people say.
you used quotes moron..... and exactly...'who' is hollywood also i feel it somewhat ironic, how you have the audacity to say i should learn to read, and understand what people say...when you have no understanding of punctuation "what has he done for Wii and 360?"...not a lot for the Wii considering it's just been released!and only 5.2 people in japan own a 360 (the .2 bein a midget)
p.s if your the dyslexic one i've heard it all before( does dyslexia constitute ignorance? )
in my personal opinion, he just being a pathetic snooker cue, "oh I want a rumble feature to come back"... moan moan moan! Why don't he fecking shut up and develop one for Wii and 360, there alway other console out there to release their games on. Why is it had to be Playstation format? they had a pretty successful port on gamecube so why stop there?
The quote was what another poster on the forum said you muppet if you read the previous posts you would know that.
Anyways I have better things to do than argue with a moronic little fanboy like you.
Oh & so what if the 360 hasnt done that well in japan the bigger markets are europe & USA where I might add 360 is doing better & better on a daily basis.
Is rumble that important? Well I certainly feel it helps with the games immersion, and I see no reason why it could not have been implemented. I guess Sony are more sour grapes with immersion than really trying to find some sensible agreement with them.
That does seem to be the biggest issue with Sony, they have taken it upon themselves to highlight the fact they are no 1, and if you dont bow down and accept this, you can quite frankly p*ss off.
It is interesting to read excuses by Sony, and in many cases I believe Phil Harrison quite frankly disagrees with what Sony Entertainment Japan often annouce. Its then left down to him to smooth it over for the Europeans and provide some on the whim reason as to why this didnt happen, or that not be included.
Take the delay in the Euro PS3, if you read between the lines on his statement, he was quite clearly as irritated as the average John Doe.
He knows full well that whilst Japanese gamers, have a odd traditions, which make them weary about adopting consumables from anywhere outside of there home country, he knows that "Westerners" do not.
Gamers are fickle to say the least, and rightly so. Putting down hard earned cash for the latest gaming system, you need to ensure that you are making the right decision for you, and in the large part this comes down to one thing. Whether you respect the manufacturer or not.
I have totally lost count on the amount of indecisions Sony have made up until the launch, it seems that there own house is so out of order, the only way to try and keep a straight face is dish the competition at any given minute.
The moment XBL videos were announced, Phil was straight on the bandwagon flaming them down, stating two machines one with a HDD and one without breaks the market, and favours people with more money. Well hang on? Does the basic PS3 lack Wi Fi? Yes it does, and using the PSP in conjunction with the PS3 (anywhere) isnt going to happen, unless at some point a wireless interface becomes available.
Being a collector, I tend to find I end up with everything that comes out at one point or another, however, even with having the money available to throw down at launch, for the first time ever, I don't think I will bother.
Unfortuantly there is only FF13 that has my attention (being a fan to the franchise), and sure MGS4 looks good, but it is still only MGS. The fact is, Im not putting down Ł500 or so at launch to pick up a console, with neither of the above available, and only a myriad of ports to spend my money on. Its not worth it.
In time I will likely pick one up, but when depends on whats available. Theres no point at all in having the most powerful unit on the planet (as sony would tell you), if your just sat there playing one of two half decent looking titles.
In all honesty Im very pleased with what Microsoft have done with the 360. They learnt from the Xbox, you need exclusives quickly, and that having a couple of hundred Mhz of extra processing power, doesnt make you the market leader.
If you take a look at the PS3 exlusivity, theres very little there, that is a new IP. The majority are upgraded sequels to popular franchises. The question is, will this be enough?
Gran Turismo, how far can you carry this series on. In fairness I thought it was pretty much nailed by GT3. GT4 didnt to me offer much new. I could be totally flamed for saying that, based on the fact I didnt play it half as much as 3, but upon booting it up, it was like, oh well, start the license and buying all over again, racing down simmilar tracks.
MGS, I personally still feel the first was the best of the series, the 2nd was great until the last 15 minutes, where I think the entire team must have gone a Crack Smoking contenst during the final minutes of coding. Was it all necessary? In anycase, yes 4 does look brill, but its still Metal Gear, and I for one am looking for new franchises to play.
Yes the 360 has titles that are sequels, ie. Halo 3, but that was always intended to be a trilogy. Which in a sense I hope it does end at 3. Otherwise, just like a good TV series, can start to get stale. I am fairly certain Halo will spring up something else from Bungie, in time to come, as Im certain Microsoft will push them to do that, but hopefully it will be a spin off, rather than "Halo 4 the story continues".
Im most excited about titles such as Alan Wake (a once PS3 only title, and now X360 only). Bioshock, 360 at first, then heading to PS3, only to get paid out to keep it Microsoft. Blue Dragon looks stunning, Halo Wars should be ace, and of cause Mass Effect, which to me will be a jewel in the crown.
I suppose ive completly drifted from the topic here, sorry for that, but hey, its a forum, and its good to vent.
I just feel sorry for the Japanese, they slow to broaden there horizons, which ultimatly lets them down. With the 360 being far cheaper in Japan, I feel they are mad not to pick it up, and experience something else, rather than stick with what they know.
Westerners on the other hand, as I say, are more fickle, and a once "XXX Fanboy" of a certain system, can often be converted if a developer doesnt heed there concerns.
One of Sonys last statements still rings out in my head, and how they got away with saying it, is almost unbelivable. Whilst I cannot remember the quote word for word, it went along the lines of "we dropped the price in Japan for the PS3, as we listend to the public complain about the price, however this wont be dropped in USA/Europe, as they are quite happy to pay the price."
How/When/Where did anyone from Sony actually ask gamers in the USA or Europe whether they felt the price was fine? Would you walk into a shop and get asked whether your happy to pay Ł200 for that pair of shoes, or instead just pay a Ł100. Everyone likes to pay less, or get a bargain, but to state that the rest of the world is happy to pay more, is arrogance at its best.
Yes Im not happy with Sonys comments, and neither should anyone else. Unless the public show how they feel based on purchases, we wont get the price knocked down, we wont get equal launch dates, and will end up being stung on pay to play games. If everyone jumps on the PS3 at launch, then Sony are right, they have won. If people hold out, until Sony deliver something good in games, and a system at a fair price, then the gamer wins. Otherwise by the time PS4 is hitting the shelves, we will end up paying 2-3 times what it is in Japan, back to a full year after launching everywhere else, for pay to download content and games, owning nothing more than some binary lodged on a hard drive.
I dont want that, Im certain many others dont, but will happen, if people continue to shell out more and more.
Games on all three systems are over priced, what happend to Ł20 games? What happend to paying Ł30 to receive a boxset, hugh manual, maps, etc. you felt like it was worth the extra.
Paying Ł40-45 for a dvd box, and a 10 page manual is getting a bit much, paying Ł50.00 for an extra DVD showing some behind the scenes is maddening.
Yes Im aware of the extra development time and resources, but staffing has not expanded that much since PS2/Xbox/Gamecube. Extra shiney graphics are part of the Dev kits available on the systems, this is the hardware inside the box, not something you have to painstakingly create by hand over countless hours.
Adding light sources is built around game engines, that often dont differ much from the prequels. So no, I dont believe gamers should have to pay more. EA themselves said early last year, they wanted to hike the price of PS2/Xbox titles, but had no reason to do it, but with the launch of the next gen systems they could.
That is opening admitting they want to coin it more. In the end, it wont be uncommon to pay close to Ł70 a game, and unless pay goes up considerably for everyone, rather than a game or two a month, most of us will be getting one every 2 months.
Right, sorry to send you all to sleep, feel free to kick my ass for writing crap, not related to the topic. Applogies once again.
^ ^ I agree with most points there, although most new Xbox360 games can easily be found for Ł40 so they haven't really gone up at all. When games were in cartridges they used to be more expensive than now, so I really amn't worried about games reaching Ł70 as i think that will take many years. Also: that's probably the longest ever post i've read from beginning to end...
Yeah I feel I'm gonna miss out on the rumble aswell but its not really sony's fault. I mean microsoft payed off immersion because they'd only be using the technology for a short time and tbhhandt sold that many controllers so the actual amount they had to pay wasnt that much. Sony on the other hand well lets just say they've been using it and incredably long time and have and probably still are selling thoudands of controllers a month. I think they amount they've been asked to pay is around $91 million. The whole thing seems kinda stupid really. Since I'm sure immersion would have realised that sony were using there technology and to wait several years after sony have used said technonolgy, why didnt they just come out when son first released the controller.
Either way its a hefty sum for even sony to pay, especially as it came around the time when they were investing heavily in the technology to build the PS3.
I'm sure they will eventually find a way to pull it off an get rumble tech into the controllers again. I did hear one story about a kind of shape shifting material that would surround the controller and provide force feedback on a locational basis, ie you get shot from the right side and the controller bucks to the left.
Yes I heard about that new plastic, if you stimulate it with an electrical current, it changes the properties of the plastic. Can make it feel soft of hard amongst other things.
Might be a few years before thats adopted mind, if ever.
I suppose it wouldnt be completly "out there" for Konami to develop there own controller for it. Quite popular in Japan to bring out custom controllers for specific games. The only reason as to why I guess they wouldnt do that, would be basically Konami kicking Sony in the teeth releasing a pad with rumble.
Oh well, theres always 3rd party I suppose.
Look on the bright side, less rumble = reduced chance of RSI. Instead we will all have knackered wrist joints from violently flinging controllers back and forth.
I would miss rumble, were I to buy a console that did not support it. I was actually playing my Dreamcast over the weekend and neglected to insert the "Jump Pack" as I think it was called.
I knew straight away once I started playing that something was amiss. Took me a second or two to realize it was the rumble, echoing earlier comments that "people will miss rumble more than they think". When it was first implemented my view was "Big deal, the controller shakes", but it has become an integral, subliminal part of gaming that will be missed when it's not included.
Also, great post paullwar. Well written, unbiased, and more entertaining than a lot of the stuff I've read lately on the many, many game websites I frequent. Kudos to you sir!
I do have moments where my rants span out pages (and this is probably one of them!), but being what I would call an over enthustiastic gamer I tend to get carried away.
Yes, certainly unbiased, I have a passion for all gaming systems. Fuels my spare time (though limited it maybe these days, I do have to keep the other half happy after all), its something I guess I will not grow out of.
As far as im concerned the 360, Wii and PS3 all deserve a place on my shelf to sit along there predecessors, Neo Geos, Speccys, PC Engines etc. Just really down to a matter of time rather than money. Quite happy to hammer down 500 notes now if there was a reason to on the PS3, but at present I will pick up the next batch of 360 titles that I'm after first, then play the waiting game.
Was not always like that mind, tended to be first in the shop at launch, but with so many brilliant titles on 360 and soon on the Wii hitting the shelves (everyone must appreciate Zelda and Mario Galaxy), they have to take up the first of the pickings.
PS3 will almost certainly have its day, that I'm positive of, but at the moment I think Sonys baby needs a little more direction in new titles and holding on to those decent titles. Sony themselves need to calm down a little in the manner of insulting there neighbours, as respect is earnt, not forced upon.
E3 was the place for war, now its time to strut there stuff, and if that means paying big money, then they have to do it, else that multi million pound investment isnt worth the box its sat in.
For me, all 3 systems have great potential, its an exciting time, and certainly costly. If you only have the money to buy one system, I hear those comments. Just do it wisely off your own back, and dont always listen to the ramblings on the net.
Look at the titles now and whats planned, the developer equals nothing at all.
Choose whats best for you. Not some idiot stating X system is better half way round the globe. That person is only making themself feel better for spending what would feel like a life times worth of saving.
I don't dish Microsoft, I will never dish Nintendo and I couldnt dish Sony for making a nerdy past time into a common form of entertainment.
My only hope is that Sony start to open there ears and stop with their mouths.

Here we go again! (better go get my reading glasses.)
I have been playing games since the first consoles came out & can never remember being called nerdy.
And I feel that Sega made it less nerdy with the Megadrive & its at the time excellent marketing of the machine than Sony, Allthough I think its clear that Sony were watching the way that Sega marketed the MD if only they had shown that level of greatness with Saturn & Dreamcast & if other people believed in those systems Sega still might be in the game today & not just publishing games.
And for a previous poster saying that Immersion should not have waited years to pick up on the fact that sony were using their technology maybe Sony should not have been so arrogant as to use it in the first place without the permission of the company that patented it.

What was it again? The cyber razor cut?!?
Anyway, you have a point but dont forget that they messed things up with the release of the Mega CD and 32X.

strangely akin to the HDD and various other add ons from ol' Gates and Co
I like the idea that if the rumble feature is going to be put into the controller, we'll feel what snake does.
Aka, if snake is smoking, the vibration may seem lax. If he's in a heated battle, we could feel the kickback via the controller when snake fires off a few rounds, or maybe snake may have a heart attack at some point, and the controller will vibrate in synchronisation with that.
It all depends on whether Sony include it or not, and to how technological they make the controller, if they put it in at all.
Kojima will probably use the controllers motion function to possibly aim the classic camera about, in those picture taking frenzied moments.
If God of War 3 comes out on the PS3 as well, they'll probably use the motion sensing to perform the "dodge roll" act.
Anyway, bring on MGS4, and bring on the PS3! Shame about the price though.
