Mario, Metroid, Zelda DS delayed 'til Xmas 07

Nintendo holds its big guns back for Christmas, CVG has learnt
Reliable sources close to Nintendo have told CVG that Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption on Wii, and Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass on DS will not see light of day until Christmas 2007, which could mean anything from October to December.

CVG called Nintendo about the delays, and was told us: "We never confirmed a date for Super Mario Galaxy, but I can confirm that Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and Phantom Hourglass will all release in 2007. We can't confirm an exact release date for any of these titles at this time."

This is disappointing news for Nintendo fans, but it's not all bad. The Q1 2007 release lists for the DS (see it here) and Wii (here) boast some great titles.

We just hope that Nintendo can get enough titles out to keep Wii Remotes and touch screens busy over the typically quiet summer period.

I'll wait for Metroid, because Christmas launch means FULL ONLINE PLAY!

Bad move, I'd say. Don't want my brand new, shiney Wii becoming the next Gamecube!
whitepony888 on 19 Dec '06
That sucks. And that Q1 Wii list sucks too. The only thing I can bring myself to get excited about is Metal Slug... and that's a disk full of retro stuff.
My Wii only arrived yesterday and already I'm starting to worry about it's future.
theideal on 19 Dec '06
Must admit disappointed at the delay but i would rather they delayed them to make an outstanding product rather than rush them out.

I agree the q1 list so far is not a lot to shout about but we will see what else comes along. Fingers crossed.
lonewolf2002 on 19 Dec '06
I noticed Elebits has been delayed until March and now the news that Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 might not be coming out for another YEAR is very bad news indeed. It's no wonder Nintendo ported Zelda over to the Wii, if it wasn't for that game, the system wouldn't have had any must-have games for months!!!

I'm very disappointed personally. Zelda is absolutely awesome but the Wii controls don't add anything to the Wii version at all and feel tacked on and the other games I own, like Wii Sports, Super Monkey Ball BB and Rayman Raving Rabbids, are undeniably fun but they're lacking in depth and don't keep you playing for hours on end.

Unless the Wii gets a steady stream of quality titles instead of the lacklustre ones that make up most of the launch titles then I fear interest in the Wii will drop quicker than it did for the GameCube. And that would be a crying shame... Crying or Very sad

The wait for the DS Zelda game is almost killing me...

Yeah, it does make you wonder whether the decision to hold off on the GC version and plough ahead with the Wii version was somewhat forced.

Having done so much right lately it'd be a shame to see Nintendo slip back to their old ways.

As for the DS version of Zelda.......mighty bummed about that now Evil or Very Mad

Anyone know of a decent alternative on the DS in the meantime ?
MisterBedo on 19 Dec '06
i knew they would delay mario anyway, and i'm kinda glad they did, last time they rushed sunshine and that wasn't as good as it could be. When nintendo take there time over a game it always ends up being top quility.
plodalong28 on 19 Dec '06
how very very rubbish...

sure wii sports is a laugh with mates and rayman'll keep you chuckling away deep into the night but once Zelda is unwrapped and finished what am I gonna have left??

Excite truck looks quite cool mind you... and WarioWare'll be another one to roll out at parties... but let's just hope this isn't true, afterall, we're all accepting this rumour as if its cold hard fact?!
jdaykin on 19 Dec '06

Jonathan Ross on 19 Dec '06
IGN have already reviewed a finished copy of Trauma Centre: Second Opinion. Surely if they hurried up and got the thing pressed to disc, it'd be out by March? Nintendo need to start getting out the good games NOW, not in a year's time.

I remember back in the good old N64 days, games would regularly be delayed, but with Nintendo AND Rare developing, there were loads of great games, unlike with the GC where there were like 6 at most.

I'm gonna have to make some kind of petition to get Super Mario RPG released on the UK VC at this rate.
whitepony888 on 19 Dec '06
Wii Q1 list is terrible, where's Elebits and Trauma Centre?
4321emanresu on 19 Dec '06
Well I hope that not all Wii owners are as negative as you guys.

Yeah delays suck but would you rather have these games rushed out the doors & then bitch to them because they are not the classics you hoped they would be?

Wii has only just been released & already some of you are sounding the death march saying I hope its not like N64 or GC where we had to wait ages for games.
But when these games arrive they make up for it well usually they do.

And I dont suppose that all the third party games have yet been revealed & saying that the list of Q1 games does not look good is a bit negative when you have not tried the Wii versions of these games yet.

Wait & see what happens with some of those games first before making rash judgements.

Sheesh calm down people
Richyrich316 on 19 Dec '06
The point is that a new system like the Wii needs a steady stream of good quality games to keep the public interested and tempt new buyers, not one amazing one at launch (Zelda if you hadn't guessed), a few OK ones and then nothing for months on end!

That's not how you market a successful console and I'd have thought Nintendo would have learnt that by now after the N64 and GameCube, which also suffered from a lack of first-party support leading to diminishing interest from third-party developers and ultimately declining sales/public apathy.

Hopefully I'm wrong but I'm wondering if the Wii will end up going the same way as the GameCube once the "buzz" surrounding the system has died down and the PS3 and 360 are well established worldwide.
Doctor_Hades on 19 Dec '06
Well thats disappointing... However, other titles will show up to fill the gaps. Besides do you want the games to come out rushed, or when they are ready? Look at Zelda:TP, the delay was all worth it because the game is pure quality.
Vanqman on 19 Dec '06
So theres nothing from March to December of worth at all then.
Grimm.

Eh? The only list released so far is for January to March. There are numerous games scheduled to be released next year which are yet to have a specific release date announced, and so could be released anywhere in Q2 through Q4 (aka April to December). One example is Disaster: Day of Crisis, which sounds like it could be amazing: a playable version of those good ol' disaster movies (earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, etc). Others include Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers.

EDIT: Also, what about Dragon Quest Swords? That's out in "Spring 2007" and, since March has been ruled out, that presumably means either April or May.

There are also undoubtedly several 2007 Wii titles that are yet to be publically revealed.
nb_nmare2 on 19 Dec '06
True, Zelda is an awesome game but it doesn't really benefit from being on the Wii and one can't help wondering if this could have been released on the GameCube months ago instead of being delayed so it could be a Wii launch game. Six months ago it might have had more impact too and looked less dated.

I understand that it's equally good on the GameCube (GameSpot rated it 1% higher than the Wii version for example) and has arguably better controls since 99% of the time you're playing the game with buttons and an analogue stick on the Wii. Shaking the Wiimote and Nunchuk for attacks adds absolutely nothing to the game and the manual aiming, which does admittedly work very well, is only used sparingly since Z-targetting is quicker and more effective most of the time. And what's with the useless Navi style pointer that serves no purpose at all? Why couldn't that have been implemented as a form of camera control to mimic the Cube's C-stick? The Z button can be used to at least re-centre the camera but it also auto-locks onto enemies so you find yourself targetting when you wanted to reorientate your viewpoint!

Effectively the Wii's best game by far (and it is a brilliant game, don't get me wrong), ironically uses the Wii remote and Nunchuk the least effectively. Hardly a great advert for the console really. Wii Sports is much better at demoing the Wii but it lacks any real depth to keep you playing it.

I saw a list of Wii titles for 2007 (most games unnamed but publishers confirmed as well as the genre). Dragon Quest Swords looks quite basic. Resident Evil will be awesome (as it's essentially Mercenaries fleshed out) but I fear it'll be out after Resident Evil 5. Which would be pretty detrimental.
It is early on and I'm in no way slagging the console off. It's just that I still feel the 3rd Party support is lacking or lazy. Nintendo's contributions are and will be amazing. MP3 delayed? Good. I guess that means the worries of no online play can be swept under the carpet. But if the graphics are similar to MP2... well, there'll be some smacked bottoms!
Jonathan Ross on 19 Dec '06
Maybe Nintendo are worried that Mario Galaxy isn't the killer-ap it needs to be, right now (I haven't played it, but I'm concerned for the game length most, on this, and accordingly, it's a tentative purchase, until I see a review that allays fears on that score - and damn them if they dare put in any of that blasted jump-block bull filler to puff out the game length! >: ( ) I'm concerned it's little more than a glorified tech demo, right now, tbh; seeing as Nintendo seem to have been VERY selective over what they'd show...If that's the case, the delay'll give some time for some flesh to get on those bones?

Super Mario Galaxy looks promising, but I just doubt it's ready for release yet...Then there's the vanishing act that Super Paper Mario pulled, yet to resolve.

I'm also really looking forward to Metal Slug Anthology. I've been holding off buying the Xbox/PS2 versions of recent editions, to be able to play all the games fresh, on Wii. I'd need to play a demo of Metroid Prime 3, before handing over the notes, as to me, Echoes was an also-ran title that was too close to the first Prime, but with an alternate dimension gimmick. I have a lot of Gamecube games I want to enjoy still, so I'm also getting a Wii, for that reason.
Machetazo on 19 Dec '06
I reckon Ninty knew of this, even before releasing the Wii. They just wanted to sell out of their Wii's before they break the news to us gamers. Seems like Ninty isn't different after all......
spoi01 on 19 Dec '06
i think ninty r great there about the games man and they just like to make sure that there games are of top qulity.i hope they bring out a mario kart for the Wii i wounder what that would be like??

Ed the duck! on 19 Dec '06
geez, not even out two weeks and people are drawing clueless conclusions - what's this world coming to! Does no-one remember how lacklustre the PS2 launch was, and see where it is now...

I think i'll wait some time before being worried about any apparent shortage in quality titles...
Diddy_Kong on 19 Dec '06
How short people's memories are, every console launch and the time after is like this, I'll admit that its disappointing that Metroid Prime Corruption isn't going to be out for spring but Mario Galaxy never had a release date anyway so there's no point in complaining about that. The list that's knocking around here is only for the first quater anyway so there'll be others announced for spring soon so stop worrying about it.
Chris_Eals on 19 Dec '06
Not surprised with Mario Galaxy delay. It would be risky to release Super Paper Mario and Mario Galaxy in short space of time.

People worrying about the lack of titles on the Wii should have a look at the DS. It had poor launch titles and it took best part of a year for the great games to start rolling in. Look at how its doing now.
broadwayrock on 19 Dec '06
For crying out loud!!!

If this is true, then I'll be more than a bit miffed.

Darn it, Nintendo. You conned us with the DS and Metroid last time (Metroid taking a year longer than suggested to arrive prior to the DS). If you're gonna make a habit of this then I've finished with your systems. The Wii console can be sold off.

Look at the irony though. Nintendo seems to be completing a microcosm of Sony's involvement in the game industry. Enthusiasm for the new format. Massive success. Deceiving customers to make sales. All that leaves is the bad PR. Customer disillusion. And a crappy proprietary format to store your games on instead of the more common DVD. Whoops, they've already done that.

The Wii brilliant fun to play games. The unfortunate snag, it needs the games to play.

Anyone that has read any of my posts will probably guess I have a beef with Nintendo - I used to be a massive supporter but I am definately not going to be a customer for the Wii... I cancelled my preorder back in Sep cos I could see where it was going.

As they saw fit to hold back GC Zelda for a year when it was near enough COMPLETED (Anyone who believed the tripe about there being game-play problems is frankly an idiot!) I knew something was up. Also the terrible lack of support they showed the GC in general taught me a little something about their priorities and sadly it seems they're obssessed with being a market leader/innovator, rather than aspiring to be an envied supplier of software that makes a console worth buying in the first place.

Any company that can kill off their offspring so readily cannot be deemed as having their customers best interests at heart.

Nintendo? I'll give you a hint... videogamers like videogames. Supply them with games and then they'll buy your system. Don't, whatever you do, drop a machine like a hot coal cos its not doing very well...

...oh dear... you already have!

Ok then, how about a suggestion? Ask Sega how it felt when they went belly up producing consoles cos if you're going to continue biting the hand that feeds you....

Well this list is definitely lacking ,and having Metroid Prime an Mario for christmas will make those sell a lot but frankly ....Nintendo has to think these things better .Right now the Wii is looking too much as a Cube ;Cube graphics ,Cube releases ,licensed games of animated movies ...and not much to play in months .

This year only for a little example will see the X360 and PS3 putting a lot of games of quality .Games as Battlefield Bad Company ,Army of Two ,Half Life Episode 2 ...making two short lists

X360 ;Kany & Lynch ,Forza Motorsport 2 ,Half Life 2 EP 1 ,Battlefield BC ,Army of Two ,Halo Wars ,Halo 3 ,Lost Planet ,Blue Dragon ,Medal of Honor Airborne ,Brothers in Arms Hells Highway ,Dark Sector ,Crackdown ,Command & Conquer 3,Virtua Tennis 3 ,Fatal Inertia ...plus many others .

PS3 ;Lair ,Virtua Fighter 5 ,Virtua Tennis 3 ,Heavenly Sword ,Motorstorm ,Half Life 2 Episode 1 ,Haze ,Battlefield BC ,Army of Two ,NInja gaiden Sigma ,Devil May Cry 4 ,Medal of Honor Airborne ,Brothers in Arms Hells Hingway ,Fatal Inertia ,Dark Sector ,Everybodys Golf ,Formula 1 ,Day of Judgement ,Armored Core 4 ,White Knight Story ,Oblivion ,FEAR ,Unreal 2007 ,probably even MGS4 at the end of the year ...

The Wii lineup against these two seems very lacking ....
Diomedes1977 on 20 Dec '06
I bought the Xbox 360 last year along with ten launch games, six of which I still own and play. This year I bought the Wii and struggled to find three games worth buying and it doesn't look like that's going to change anytime soon...

Eurogamer.net have just reviewed Elebits, a game I was really looking forward to, and gave it 6/10. Not exactly the kind of score that makes you happy that you've bought that console really... Confused

In my opinion, the Wii has quite possibly the weakest launch games to date nearly making the PS2's abysmal launch look mildly impressive! If it wasn't for Zelda Twilight Princess, it would be pitiful in my view...

you really are a sorry lot, if you're so bothered by a so-called lack of titles (after TWO BLOODY WEEKS) then go and play on your xbox360 or ps3 and stop spoiling it for everyone else
Diddy_Kong on 20 Dec '06
It's not so much the lack of titles after two weeks, it is more the lack of titles due to come out in Q1. Personally I see nothing of interest on the Q1 list so once I've completed Zelda my Wii will be gathering dust apart from occasional plays of THDJ and Super Monkey Ball.
DarthMorbus on 20 Dec '06

As stated before its not the initial releases which are causing concern its the lack of those really must have titles in the next 3 months thats hurting. Zelda good yes killer game no and it is the same game as done on GC apart from some added wii-mote stuff plus HD and widescreen support.

Wii needs a big title that will make a lot more gamers take notice and think yeah i would buy a wii to play that as at this point in time there just isn't. That list frankly left me cold, for me personally there is not one game on that list i want.

I want the wii to succeed big time ( means i wont have another GC on my hands).

Sums it up!

Try and cope eh? Its not a hate campaign against the Wii, its a sad fact and one perpetuated by Nintendo themselves from their reputation earned by the N64 and the shameful demise of the Game Cube. You know, everyone and their cat was excited about the Wii but unless something is pulled out the hat then it is going to be in trouble - disgusting really, when you think about it, this early on! Saddest thing is that this isn't the only forum in the world on this topic...

I hope Nintendo reads these things!
bforbosker on 21 Dec '06
my point was that people are already consigning the wii to an early grave after just two weeks, and think that 3 months of titles are indicative of the consoles entire future (not forgetting that fact that no definitive list of games to be released actually exists) - you only have to look at all the criticism aimed at the DS to realise some people are just too quick with their judgements. It's easy enough reeling off lists of games to be released but what's to say they're actually going to come out on schedule, or actually be of any quality or sell in large quantities? I'm not gonna pretend that Nintendo have things perfectly planned out but how people seem to think they can predict the future all of a sudden is beyond me.

Oh, and Zelda is a killer title - I think 75% attachment rate speaks for itself as well as all the positive reviews it garnered.
Diddy_Kong on 21 Dec '06
You know, fair dues and I see your point entirely. I'm unabashedly p**sed at Nintendo, but I am sorry if I offended you.

I've been a massive Nintendo fan for so long and after the N64 drought and my starving Game Cube, I have lost it completely with 'em.

Although I would love to be wrong, honestly.

I don't think Zelda should neccessarily be counted - in my opinion - only because, first and foremost, it is a Game Cube game.

Sh*t, that was depressing as well, hunting for Zelda... I trawled though 3 Games, a Toys R Us, a Virgin Megastore and both HMV's on Oxford Street. (not counting S/H in Game), I saw almost no Game Cube games at all...

I finally found a copy of TP in an obscure shop that "had one in the back"!
bforbosker on 22 Dec '06
I'm really beginning to become completely convinced that 360 is the only way to go. Nintendo and Sony are being made to look like they're making bad moves... And although that's partially true, it's also because Microsoft is making such phenomenal moves on this generation that it's not even funny. Say what you want but 360 is looking fantastic right now, and 1 year from now, and 2 years from now, etc.
0v3rki11 on 24 Dec '06

My HMV (Oxford, City rather than Street) had several copies on the Wii shelf, as did GAME and Gamestation. Clearly Nintendo just hates London.

"We never confirmed a date for Super Mario Galaxy, but I can confirm that Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and Phantom Hourglass will all release in 2007. We can't confirm an exact release date for any of these titles at this time."

None of that says "we're gonna release these at Xmas". Mario and Zelda DS I can see, reluctantly, but I'll bet Metroid is out before the Summer.

What disappoints me most about the Wii line-up is the, at present, almost total absence of real committed 3rd-party games. Even GameCube had Rogue Leader, Eternal Darkness and Capcom for a while. Sega and UbiSoft are doing their damnedest to get games out, but they're not taking their time to make the best games.

I want a game I can really drool about on the Wii that isn't made by Nintendo.

I want a Bioshock, Mass Effect or White Knight Story on the Wii!
