Valve Software's chief Gabe Newell has unleashed a stinging attack on PS3, saying Sony should cancel the console and start all over again.
"The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think It's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted," Newell reportedly said in an interview with Game Informer.
He continued: "I'd say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a do over. Just say, 'This was a horrible disaster and we're sorry and we're going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it'."
It's a different story with Nintendo, however, Newell revealing he really likes "everything that Nintendo is doing."
"The happy story is the Wii," he said. "I'm betting that by Christmas of next year, the Wii has a larger installed base than the 360. Other people think I'm crazy."
"I'd say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a do over. Just say, 'This was a horrible disaster and we're sorry and we're going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it'."
Indeed, thankgod he sticks to software as he can't honestly believe that would be the right thing to do now really!!! tbh i'm suprised that someone from such a respected software developer would say something so stupid and out of context seeing as any new console must be given time to find its feet.
Now this guy pretends to impersonate what the customers want ?
Too many PC-guys slamming the PS3 ....guess they are already addicted to the Microsoft(DirectX,XNA,etc ) way of developing and dont want to work hard and compile themselves ...
Really really stupid declarations here ....guess those people serve for what they serve but are a bit thin on the common sense front ....
meh, the fanboys are happy, they get a console that has a sony logo on it. The rest of us choose a console that we may actaully enjoy and not have to pay the price of a small car for it.

No, constantly having to reinvent the wheel is a much better idea...
Sony should take a year out, sit in a corner and have a damn good think about what they have done in the last year!
DRM, flamable batteries, PS3, suing Lik-Sang and lots of general arrogance. They are quickly displacing Microsoft as the most hated company on the planet.
This article might have had more credibility had the guy stated the *exact* reasons for why he thinks Sony should scrap the PS3 and start all over again. In fact, his statement as a whole is just inane because the PS3 is already out in Japan and the US so there's no way that Sony would just scrap the console on the heresay of one developer!
P.S. I'm not a Sony "fanboy", I own an Xbox 360 and a Wii...
meh, the fanboys are happy, they get a console that has a sony logo on it. The rest of us choose a console that we may actaully enjoy and not have to pay the price of a small car for it.
...You should work for Valve . Another, frankly stupid comment.
hahaha ohh Sony, the knifes are out & your backs the target, how a company with as much experience as sony, with all the good work they done with the PS1/2 could of f**ked up soooo monumentally on this console is beyond anyone!!... thank god 4 the internet or Sony would of gotta away with sooo many lies & misguided comments. God bless everyone of you out there. See Sony we're not as blind & easily lead as you once thought.
He thinks the Wii will have a bigger user base by Xmas 07. He could be right.
The people who bought the first line batch of Wii's were gamers, I bought one, and now almost every non gamer who has played on my Wii says they will get one when they are available again.
But you cant ignore the power of the power of the Playstation brand. even if the PS3 does suck - it will fly off the shelves
Unfortunately the truth is, most of the Sony die-hards are as blind and stupid as Sony think. You just have to look at some of the replies in this topic to see that.
He is being daft for saying it should be cancelled but no one can deny that that Sony screwed up by making Blu-Ray as a non option on the machine.
In the next generation of consoles HD-DVD & Blu-Ray will be much cheaper and easier to make.
Hmmm its still really hard to say whether we can all say sony have screwed up by making BR a non-option on the machine. I supose you can call it a risk (much the same way as with the wii and motion-sensing) but it may pay off massively in the long run.
Of course the next generation (after this next-gen lol) would be cheaper but I think its an exciting risk that there is an option to buy a console with a built in BR player now.
P.S I won't be buying a PS3 this year...I think its better to wait if the gamble pays off than buy at launch
*Sony, I can honestly say I would have quite happily had a new playstation sitting alongside my other consoles (a PS1 & PS2 among them), but I'm sitting this one out.
Please try harder on the PS4.
Hints: concentrate on the games (not trying to promote your new format), also, build to a fair price and most importantly, do not undermine the consumer and make arrogant public statements.
The only way we can hope to change sony's strategy for future playstations is by not buying into their mistakes.
The playstation is a strong brandname, but only the stupid would buy a poor product purely because of it's badge.
Unfortunately the truth is, most of the Sony die-hards are as blind and stupid as Sony think. You just have to look at some of the replies in this topic to see that.
?!?!?! I'm looking but I can't see any. Either contribute to the topic or don't bother posting
Whether you think what he's saying is right or wrong, there's no denying that when someone like him says something like that, Sony are gonna have to sit up and take notice.

Well, lets start with you.
Indeed, thankgod he sticks to software as he can't honestly believe that would be the right thing to do now really!!! tbh i'm suprised that someone from such a respected software developer would say something so stupid and out of context seeing as any new console must be given time to find its feet.
Respected software developer that knows a lot more about the machine than you or me says it's a disaster and you still won't take any notice.
I think the PS3 is a huge mistake for Sony, they will lose market share, and a huge amount of money unless they can quickly encourage developers to make PS3 games...I just hope they can sort it out, haveing 3 competing consoles is much healthier for us lot, the gamers.
Too many PC-guys slamming the PS3 ....guess they are already addicted to the Microsoft(DirectX,XNA,etc ) way of developing and dont want to work hard and compile themselves ...
No, constantly having to reinvent the wheel is a much better idea...
No ,constantly having to pay Microsoft to program in their SO ,with their tools (XNA ) ,royalties for games on their consoles (X360 ) and licenses for using their graphics libraries (DirectX),to pay them to play online (Live Anywhere=Paying Everywhere ) ... is a much better idea dont you think ?Why keep Gates the richest man in the world when he can be the richest in the universe and make developers and consumers alike to pay his company for each and every step of the game-making and selling-thorough proccess ?
Lets everybody pay Microsoft for every step they make and then slam those that doesnt !
Got a Wii on day of release. Great fun but needs a good 12 months before great titles appear.
2 weeks later, bought a PS2 as the missus had her teenage son visit with his mate. Guitar Hero 1&2 + singstar fun was had by all (plus I like guitar hero & missus likes singstar)
2 weeks ago, thought, sod it. Traded my dust gathering PSP (not used since I bought a DS) for a xbox360 (plus PGR3, viva Pinata, some controllers, some XBLA games and of course, Gears of War.
3 days ago after downloading catalysy 7.1 and turned of write combining, NWN2 looks and plays like a dream.
Now, I ask myself, what could the PS3 possibly offer me that I don't already have (lol, like a life for example).
Lets everybody pay Microsoft for every step they make and then slam those that doesnt !
yea lets pay sony for every c**kup they make instead
You pay Sony for the hardware .And developers of games a royalties for game sold in the system . Period .You can buy non-official accesories as USb keyboards ,mouses ,headsets ,the online is free ,the operative system is Linux ,the graphics library is OpenGL (free software ) ...
On the other hand Microsoft ,if it succeeds ,will have a iron grip on all the informatic and video game industry ;developers have to pay them for developing over Windows ,graphics artists have to pay them for using their graphic libraries Direct X ,consumers have to upgrade their cards because DirectX is getting linked to new generation of video cards ,publishers have to buy the XNA tools and license of DirectX ,to pay Microsoft royalties for game sold ,pledge into the closed online system of MS and having Microsoft administrate the benefits and decide what do you merit and what you dont ,and consumers will have to pay for the hardware ,the official accesories (why bother making the console compatible with PC when official accesories are more expensive ?) ,the games ,for playing online ,for the HD-DVD add-on and so on ...and nobody will be able to move from this situation if we arrive there .Beware fanboys ,in your hate against Sony (because your own reasons ...as Sony killed the mother of Bambi or Sony relegated Nintendo and Sega you cry every night )you are summoning a tenfold threat .
is it just me or didn't the ps3 well out at launch how on earth is this a failure in anybody's book despite hardware shortages they have sold over 1.1 million ps3's in 2 months

Hmmmm......yet despite all these spiralling costs it's still cheaper to buy an xbox 360. And the games are around the same price as the PS3's.
and consumers will have to pay for the hardware ,the official accesories (why bother making the console compatible with PC when official accesories are more expensive ?) ,the games ,for playing online ,for the HD-DVD add-on and so on
im sorry, but you dont "have" to pay for playing online or HD-DVD and as far as im aware the convention of paying for games or hardware isn't anything new.
You pay Sony for the hardware .And developers of games a royalties for game sold in the system . Period .You can buy non-official accesories as USb keyboards ,mouses ,headsets ,the online is free ,the operative system is Linux ,the graphics library is OpenGL (free software ) ...
The free PS3 linux operating system does not currently give you the low level access to the hardware required to produce top games though. You have to pay Sony a lot of money for that...
developers have to pay them for developing over Windows
Not true. You only have to pay them if you distribute certain copyrighted material.
Direct X ,consumers have to upgrade their cards because DirectX is getting linked to new generation of video cards
Why is that a problem. It's called technology moving forward.
pledge into the closed online system of MS
Like the closed online system of Sony you mean? Plus it's not true. There are other online gaming networks for the PC. As a developer, you don't have to use the MS network.
.Beware fanboys ,in your hate against Sony (because your own reasons ...as Sony killed the mother of Bambi or Sony relegated Nintendo and Sega you cry every night )you are summoning a tenfold threat .
I'm no MS fanboy, (in fact I own one of practially every major console ever made - and several obscure ones) but much of what you have written is utter rubbish and comes across as you being a rabid Sony fanboy. MS are no better or worse than Sony, who also have had some very dubious ethics / dealings over the last few years...
it is quite a bold statement to make, but if the people at valve are having a nightmare with the production and development on the ps3, and they are a very experienced firm. it kind of puts the pressures on any new talented studios looking to make a name for themselves.

Wow, that must be one of the most badly thought out posts I've read so far this year. Congratulations, I guess you're not on speaking terms with Mr Facts (let alone Mr Ability To Form A Coherent Argument ).
VALVe's head honcho has no reason to stand up for MS at all. In fact last year he made several public statements panning their work on Vista and DX-10 as providing little in the way of real help for games developers in the new multi-core world. This article is far from an MS love-in.

How does that work then ?
Cheaper ?If you consider 60 euros a year for the Live is more expensive .And if you want to see films in HD is considerably more expensive .
Cheaper ?If you consider 60 euros a year for the Live is more expensive.
I don't mind paying a bit extra for a superior service. Xbox live will likely be linked to live anywhere etc later this year give true synergy between the 360 and the pc. Nothing like this is going to happen with the Sony service.
And if you want to see films in HD is considerably more expensive .
It is not considerably more expensive. The optional HD drive is about Ł120. At least MS give you the option of deciding whether you want one or not, and don't try to railroad you into their own format like Sony do.
Cheaper ?If you consider 60 euros a year for the Live is more expensive .And if you want to see films in HD is considerably more expensive .
dont know about you, but i'd rather pay for something thats actually decent than having something that by all reports is quite poor, for free. 60euros a year (max) isn't going to break the bank. (and lets look at all the demos you can download that you may usually have bought a magazine for 6quid to play...just one example of why it works for me)
i dont believe he honestly meant that sony could possible start al over again but by making such an outrageous comment he was hammering home HIS opinion that ps3 is a disaster.....not yet owning any of the next gen systems due to the upset i went through opting for the saturn and the dreamcast at launch i am sitting this one out until next christmas to see which will serve me best and hopefully a ps3 price cut mighte help entice me towards it as in all honesty thats what puts many a young gamer off it...but funnnily enough the more articles i read dissing sony i find myself more attracted towards the ps3..i have a thing for the underdog maybe...but if sony could deliver a stripped down ps3....smaller...flash memory rather than a huge expenseive harddrive...a wired controller..basically a ps3 core sytstem for a huge reduction this would be enticing!
Unfortunately the truth is, most of the Sony die-hards are as blind and stupid as Sony think. You just have to look at some of the replies in this topic to see that.

You = Blind + Stupid
LOL. For starters I have never owned a Sony console so I am hardly a blind+stupid sony fanyboy now am I However, Maybe if you weren't so 'blind + stupid' you wouldnt agree with every sony bashing statement that gets fired out you fool. Yes he may know more about the machine that me or you but advising sony that they should quit it now and start again just is never going to happen now is it?!
PS3 = Too expensive, Released last, No stock, No good games (yet).
Wii = Not enough games worth buying (yet - and even then, they're not of the Halo 3/ Metal Gear Solid 4/ Goldeneye 007 AAA-standard)
I've never understood console fanboyship, as I've owned everything through each generation, each with their own great games. But it honestly seems the 360 is the only console currently worth owning, and Microsoft are the only company that are really giving people what they want. Innovative technology is great - I bought my Wii to support Nintendo's bravery. That said, I buy a games console to play games. If Nintendo wants to catch up, they should start releasing some games (good ones), whilst interest in the Wii is hot.
You honestly think that he was suggesting that Sony actually scrapped the console now!? The guy is making a point about how bad the console is you cretin.
And this..
However, Maybe if you weren't so 'blind + stupid' you wouldnt agree with every sony bashing statement that gets fired out you fool
...doesn't even make sense. Don't try again please because you won't be getting another reply.

Well ,then I dont mind paying more for a superior console as the Playstation 3 with retrocompatibility with PS1 and PS2 ,conection with the PSP ,web browser ,Linux and all the scene that will appear later ,reproduction of HD movies ,HDMI conection etc etc ..
5 years of Live are about 300 euros ...So if I want to use my console to play ,play online and see HD movies I have to spend how much ?900 euros ?Plus all the official accesories that the PS3 can use computer ones and the X360 uses expensive official accesories ....
Thinking the X360 is less expensive is dumbass thinking .The PS3 has a higher entry price ,but that entry price includes everything .MS uses the microtransactions idea with the hardware ...and at the end of the day you pay more .
MS railroad you in the things they want ...as the online service .Why they dont let the developers put their online aside of the Live ?Las year if you were playing GRAW in the PC it was free and in Live you have to pay .Sad thing is the Live Anywhere thing will develop in a Paying Everywhere ...as X360 and PC share online games the thread will be to make online gaming in PC in the mould of X360 ;paying a quote .
Well another Dev voices their disscontent with the PS3 & out come the fanboys who think they know all to protect Sony even though everybody with common sense can see the Sony have made some really bad c**k ups this time around.
Bluray is only in the PS3 not to benefit the gamers not to benefit the developers but to strengthen Sony's grip on a new storage medium & another area of the electronics business they want to corner they tried it with betamax, UMD, Mem stick, & minidisk I bet that if video tape had just been invented at the time of PS2 that Betmax would have been its storage format.
And as for the "free" online service just how long will it be free for? sony say its free enjoy but for how long will they be able to supplement the costs of this? especially if PS3 doesn't sell well enough to offset the expence. And there is no guaruntee that 3rd party devs wont charge for their online games as they are providing the servers & hosting especially with EA I dont think that they will give away free online play on all their titles when there is potentially millions to be made from online play.
Sony launching here in March is a mistake in my opinion for once they should have delayed the console because most of their launch line up is full of old games that have been out on 360 for months already & the games that are exclusive are not much to rave about either & yes I have played Motorstorm import & resistance & was totaly underwhelmed, & ridge 7 is just an enhanced version of Ridge 6 that has been on 360 for almost a year.
More & more titles are going to go multiformat because of the vast expense of developing for the 2 more powerfull machines seems to be increasing & a lot of devs just cannot absorb these sky high costs.
So you have to pay for Xbox live but it is a proven service that has so much content & great usability from what I have heard from some friends of mine over the pond that have PS3 the online is not all that great & you can bet that with them I feel rushing into a March release the system wont be any better for our EU launch either.
And as for the Sony execs they have become so arrogant & up their own asses that they have truly lost site of what really matters & thats the games I suppose they will say that Valve making this statement doesnt matter just like they said that GTA 3 didnt shift many PS2's such is their ignorance & arrogance towards the industry that they in their own mind built from the ground up.
I do hope that the Wii continues to improve & get great titles though & I will be getting one to compliment my 360 original Xbox Dreamcast PS1 & 2, Saturn & too many other old consoles to mention, when some more games that I want become available as for buying a PS3 I have just become so p**sed off at sony over the whole period of PS3 from its creation to launch & impending EU launch that I wont bother for a long time if at all.
Well another Dev voices their disscontent with the PS3 & out come the fanboys who think they know all to protect Sony even though everybody with common sense can see the Sony have made some really bad c**k ups this time around.

Too long but I will answer two things ...
Dvelopers point that their arent very happy with the development for the PS3 .....but at the same time they point out it is still way easier than with the PS2 .How in hell must we assume this is a key factor of Sony doing crap this time when in fact they have done better than last generation ?
Blu Ray is there only to strengthen Sonys grip on a new storage medium ?.I suppose thats why Kojima just said he needs a 50GB BR for MGSIV ,games are multirregion with all the languages included etc .....your wishful thinking doesnt make this a reality .
Online gaming for free .Dont let you fool you .A server can be something as simple as a P IV with a great bandwith ...thats all .Theres a great mystic about "severs " and "who will keep the servers ??!!" when in fact it isnt a great cost at all and has been provided in PC for years for free .Dont let that idea splip into your mind ,we dont have to pay to play online .
Well ,then I dont mind paying more for a superior console as the Playstation 3 with retrocompatibility with PS1 and PS2 ,conection with the PSP ,web browser ,Linux and all the scene that will appear later ,reproduction of HD movies ,HDMI conection etc etc ..

I would respond, but until you can form a coherent sentence, I really can't be bottomd to try and read all the way through/decipher your post.
Sorry but from what he says in the interview it is clear he actually thinks that is what they should do. Also, you say he was merely pointing out how 'bad' the console is. My 1st post merely stated that this is out of context as it has only just launched in US and Japan. I can remember him slagging off microsoft's approach before its launch yet the 360 has now firmly settled and you wouldn't call it a 'bad' console.
Didn't mean to cause you such offence. I thought this site is about approaching topics objectively. As i already said, I have never owned a Sony console I just thought his statements were rash and out of context. Therefore I still don't understand how I can be a blind+stupid Sony fanboy...what does a fanboy even mean now since its fired about all the time in these forums if you even partially defend one brand?!?!
Well ,then I dont mind paying more for a superior console as the Playstation 3 with retrocompatibility with PS1 and PS2 ,conection with the PSP ,web browser ,Linux and all the scene that will appear later ,reproduction of HD movies ,HDMI conection etc etc ..
I can't believe I'm arguing with a fanboy
It is not a superior console. The two machines are pretty much equal. Retrocompatibility is not the big deal that people think it is. Who in their right mind spends that much money only to play PS1 games
5 years of Live are about 300 euros ...So if I want to use my console to play ,play online and see HD movies I have to spend how much ?900 euros?
As already mentioned, the live online service is streets ahead of the PS3 service. You have to pay, but you a much better service as a result. Look out for streaming HD tv etc through live, video marketplace etc soon as well.
Plus all the official accesories that the PS3 can use computer ones and the X360 uses expensive official accesories ....
Like what?
It's a games console. What do you want to plug into it other than joypads, a steering wheel, and maybe a USB hard disk / camera etc for displaying photos etc. All of which the 360 can do with ease.
MS railroad you in the things they want ...as the online service .Why they dont let the developers put their online aside of the Live?
That just doesn't make any sense. Sony railroad you into their own online service, so what's the difference?
Las year if you were playing GRAW in the PC it was free and in Live you have to pay
Have you actually tried using any of the free PC online things? The experience was horrible without resorting to a paid for service such as GameSpy (which most online pc games come bundled with these days). So you still end up paying to get a decent service.
Sad thing is the Live Anywhere thing will develop in a Paying Everywhere ...as X360 and PC share online games the thread will be to make online gaming in PC in the mould of X360 ;paying a quote .
Rumour is that the xbox live membership will evolve into a general live membership, and so yoiu will only have to pay once for a premium online experience across both platforms. Doesn't sound too bad to me...
I think it was Diomedes that was saying the paying for the upkeep of servers is a non-issue for the ps3. I'd like you to read this and then tell me why you think you won't ever have to pay anything. You think Sony's going to pay for them forever?
(Bungie's response to being asked to implement servers for halo 3)
"Bungie/Microsoft Have The Money To Do It" Yes and no. Halo 2 is the most played game on Xbox Live. The sheer amount of servers needed would be astronomical. The hardware alone would cost millions (and severely eat into Microsoft/Bungie's coffers). That's not including administration, upkeep, updates, backups, bandwidth, and so on.
Microsoft's home entertainment division is currently $1.14 billion in the red as of Q4 2006 , and don't have millions to spend on things that would make very little difference.
Completely agreed. But I still think Microsoft are doing the best job console-wise. Personally, I'm making the jump to PC's soon. Spend far too much time/ money playing video games.
Valve is owned by ATI which has made the GPU´s for both the 360 and the Wii. The GPU in the PS3 is made by their rival, NVIDIA. Valve has crippled performance on rival graphics cards (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=838630&page=1&pp=20) . So excuse me if I doubt the objectivity of this statement.

Well now I can understand why he came out with such an random statement. Brand loyalty or what
P.S Is no one else getting alittle bored after every topic like this there are constant accusations of 'fanboy' flying about Is it possible to disagree with a topic without being called a fanboy?!
I'm concerned that it was an employee of Valve that said this. Ok, I don't know for certain as to his reasoning for hating the PS3 and loving the Wii (which is a problem many have already mentioned), but I can easily jump to the assumption that it's down to how important Sony deem the "wow-factor" to be and how important Nintendo deem "gameplay + longevity" to be.
Why am I concerned if this is the case? Because Valave have a history of putting the "wow-factor" above longevity. Everyone I know that's played HL2 have completed it within a week and have little to no reasoning to play it again (multiplayer doesn't count because that lasts for as long as the players do). In my eyes, Sony's philosophy on the PS3 is right up Valve's alley.
Makes me wonder if there's a more selfish reason for him making that statement.

where did you hear that?? I can assure you where ever you heard it, it's not true, and Valve is an independent company, with no affiliation whatsoever to do with ATi.
My opinion of this whole thing is the Gabe is going a little overboard. I agree that the PS3 is not a brilliant machine, it's too expensive, it's too late and for all that, it's not that much better than a 360 to warrant those things, but I think to say they should scrap it altogether and start again is a little extreme.
The thing about consoles is that games tend to be designed around the limits of the console, rather than the other way around, and for that reason, there will still be some great games on the system that push the hardware. So it's not his preference, big deal, he's entitled to it. I really don't get how strongly some people feel about all of this. The console is merely a vehicle to the games, but it's the developers that have to really use that vehicle. If they don't like using it, that's their choice.
It's a pity but I'm eager to know what those who constantly diss sony's brand will have to say in 5 years.. Whether you like it or not, the PS3 will win at the end (watch out for the effect of ensuing price cuts in a while)... I'm loving this, Microsoft might as well start talking less and doing more...not that they dont do anything, but it would be nice for them to keep it cool if they really feel like they're the best... Gates is rich enough isn't he?
Maybe I'm a uninformed casual but why is the PS3 getting so much flak?I've seen what Wii games look like and they look awful compared to 360 and PS3 games.
I wasn't going to say anything till I read this, but seriously have you ever worked in Networking. A single P IV server could never handle the workload of running an entire online game community. Especially not if it's running multiple games, and there are thousands of players going at it at any one time. The server would be overloaded in less then 5 minutes.
Then you have the cost of keeping the damn things running, not to mention the cost of buying and setting them up in the first place. If you think there is a great myth about the cost of running a dedicated game server, then you really should try working in the business. By the fifth time that you're called out at 3 0'clock in the bloody morning to fix a server crash you'll start to realise that servers don't work all the time and they need constant maintainance.
Personally I can't believe that anyone with an ounce of Networking knowledge would say something so ignorant. So I can only assume that you don't really know what you're talking about.
Parts + Maintainance + Space for servers = Big Moolah
I'm sorry but as much as I hate to admit it, you need to get the money from somewhere to pay for that, and the cost of the game is simply not enough. Especially since you can't predict how many games will be sold.
common everyone get things into perspective. I for one have not heard of this guy and i play loads of games. I don't know the guys who make games and neither do people buying consoles. I'm also sick of hearing people go on about the price and their are always 360 owners saying their console is cheaper and how they have bought the premium pack and the wireless adapter and have got the HD-DVD drive........hold on thats Ł279 + Ł60 + Ł120 =Ł459. Oh hold that is more than the PS3 and with a smaller hard drive..........mmmm seems Microsoft has got us there. The facts are there , Microsoft want a piece of the all round entertainment as well, they are just being sneaky about it. I'm no fan boy as i have a 360 and think its great but have to admit Formula 1 and Motorstorm look mighty fine for 1st gen titles and there is nothing like it on the 360 (all first person). Sensible people with buy want they want and i think a Blu-Ray player built in could be pretty good. We will see.

That 'great bandwidth' mentioned earlier isn't free either...
Well I can think of one reason to keep gates the richest man in the world http://www.gatesfoundation.org/default.htm
That said when developers claim that MSs system gives them better support and makes it easier to develop games maybe THAT makes sense. Why indeed should they have to work harder to develop games for a system? Do you remove your shoelaces completely from your shoe before you put them on and then relace it and tie them? You seem to be the definition of fanboy. I dare say you would defend Sony harder than you would defend your own mother. Stop taking the attacks on Sony so personally. It's not our fault you paid $600 for a betamax machine, you should have done some nonbiased research first.
Maybe I'm a uninformed casual but why is the PS3 getting so much flak?I've seen what Wii games look like and they look awful compared to 360 and PS3 games.
To use a simple analogy think of stand up comedy.
Microsoft is the presenter of the show who is accepted so long as their input is kept to a minimum. Once they realise that the audience is getting impatient they introduce the next act and then quickly get off stage before the flak can start flying.
Sony is the act which just doesn't know when to call it a day. The audience is booing, hurling peanuts and yelling at them to get off. However they still keep going in the hope that they will hit on the sweet spot of comedy and get the audience to be on their side again. It never occurs to them to take a break, get out of the spotlight, let the commotion die down and then try again later.
Nintendo is the regular comedian. They're calm, chilled, and suprisingly funny. They say their bit, then get off the stage as cooly as they entered. Then they don't comeback till they have an act which can top what they just did.
So to put it simply, the reason PS3 is getting so much flak is because Sony are the only target. If they would simply apologise for doing a bad show or just walk off the stage and take a break, let everyone calm down. Then the flak would start flying elswhere.
Oh also, the graphics of the Wii were never meant to be as impressive as the 360/PS3. Nintendo opted to improve gameplay this time around (hence the controllers).
Gabe bashed MS and Sony and is know to hate consoles except Wii. Why CVG only published the Sony bashing and took the interview out of it's context? I cannot rely on CVG as an unbias source for news, do you date call yourself journalists?? Or is advertiser more like it?? Shame on you CVG.
Gameinformer:What about the PS3?
Gabe Newell: The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think It's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted. I'd say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a "do over". Just say, "This was a horrible disaster and we're sorry and we're going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it". The happy story is the Wii. I'm betting that by Christmas of next year, the Wii has a larger installed base than the 360. Other people think I'm crazy. I really like everthing that Nintendo is doing.
Whats your oponion of the xbox360?
Gabe Newell says: Microsoft has so many problems with Vista; I wish they were focusing more on the thing that runs on hundreds of millions of PCs rather than six million proprietary clients. Vista really shows a lack of focus on making a better consumer platform. I came out of the Windows group, and right now, I'd go with a Macintosh as being a better solution for most consumers than a Vista-based PC. It's shocking to me. If you're an XP user, you're going to be more comfortable upgrading to an Apple than Vista. Vista is going to drive you crazy in terms of some of their interface decisions. Other than gaming, which is Apple's heel, almost everything else works better on a Mac. As somebody who used to live and die to make Windows succesful, that's super sad for me.
is it just me or didn't the ps3 well out at launch how on earth is this a failure in anybody's book despite hardware shortages they have sold over 1.1 million ps3's in 2 months
because a lot of these sales were by people to sell it on ebay for a profit. and the people r finding they can't sell it lol. the fact is the ps3 is a failure!!! its not just the nintendo and microsoft fans saying it now!!!
So many posts over a mere idiotic statement from a software developer...most of you spoilt brats end up buying all 3 anyway so whats the point arguing?!?!? it could be worse..you could still be playing the dreamcast like me and wondering when shenmue 3 and nights are coming out...sniff

Sounds more like he is basj=hing Vista than the 360 to me so that argument is not really relevant is it.
And as for Diamedes or whatever his name is Bluray games will this much storage not because the games are that big but because it has been revealed on other titles that the game is actually on the disc multiple times but in different languages I can remember games on my old Snes & megadrive that had multiple EU languages on them but they didnt come on huge cartridges, & MGS 4 will most likely be chock full of the only thing that Kojima is really good at these days Cut scenes as I feel that Splinter cell surpassed MGS in terms of gameplay ages ago unless of course MGS 4 is made completely different to the others & actually features more gameplay than flashy intro's.
Sony have sunk a HUGE chunk of cash into bluray & they saw an opportunity to put it into the console knowing well hoping that millions of people would gladly hand over way to much cash for what is supposed to be a games console so they could increase the installed base of BR players at the gamers expence.
I even read in Stuff magazine that they are arguing which is better HD DVD or BR & the t**t in the mag says about the 360 that you get the media remote which saves you navigating menu's with a control pad which is good then the even bigger t**t replies that you can browse the PS3 menu's with the PSP well excuse me wouldnt that be just as bad as navigating with a pad? a very expensive pad as well what utter crap.
They must also be thinking that everyone that wastes their cash on PS3 will also waste more on a PSP to use it as a remote control
Ah, forums are great these days! Nothing like a rash statement taken out of context to p**s people off!
The fact of the matter is... ...its early days: ta dah!
A bit obvious that, eh? I tell you what though... I'm really going to miss this subject when it all settles down. When that does eventually happen, I'd give my left nut for Apple to make a shock announcement!

Honestly, who gives a toss? It's all about the games, and as everybody knows, real gamers go where the good games are, even it that means investing in multiple systems.
It's worrying, though, that a figure as respected in the industry as Gabe Newell doesn't see the PS3 as a good platform to make games for...
The only sensible thing to do is to let the fanboys dive in feet-first, and see how it all works out for them. If the PS3 is still going strong 12 months after it's launch, and if it has at least five must-have games that aren't availiable on the 360, then I'm sure they'll survive.
Of course, Sony's attitude towards their customers still stinks.
"other people think im crazy", i wonder why they think that gabe , also remember when the ps2 came out most games were on cd, now there all on dvd for the extra space, sony are thinking bout the future with bluray.
MMM not the first developer to say this. As for people saying its just a PC dev who knows nothing about consoles just think without a PC there would be no console games written.
At the end of the day as has been pointed out loads of times if the people that buy the machine are happy with it and the games being produced for it what does it matter what anyone says about it.
My own opinion on the PS3 is that i will wait a long time before getting one( problems with production, I am not happy with the transformer inside the machine, Blu-ray not a market winner yet/ever). Sony also seemed quick to remove ken kuturgi( excuse spelling cba to look it up) when the PS3 was finished and shipped. That all to me does not fill me with confidence but thats my opinion though.
Maybe Sony put components in that developers etc were not ready for yet.
If sony didn't expect me to pay Ł500 for the "privilege" of owning a PS3 then it would be fine. That is the thing that p**ses me off, oh and the whole pointless Blu Ray thing making the games more expensive than any other platform. It is absolutely f**king ridiculous that Sony expect people to pay that amount, they should have a complete recall and say "Look, we are going to tinker with it to make it more affordable."
The PS3 has been an absolute disaster in America, so many have been returned once they realised no one is stupid enough to pay Ebay prices for them. Also, wasn't one of the first ones sold at a large store in Japan given to a Chinese person who didn't speak a word of Japanese, he was merely there on behalf of a business man looking to sell it at profit.
Sony just keep making arrogant statements and are so blind to what the (sensible) consumers and gamers think. I remember them saying something along the lines of "The PS3 is actually a bargain at that price." That is the epitome of arrogance, yeah, maybe the technology is that advanced, but I am not paying Ł500 for it either way. Especially when I can play Zelda on a Wii for Ł210 or so.
They also recently said "No one will ever use 100% of Cell" Then why the f**k did you bother with it?
He is being daft for saying it should be cancelled but no one can deny that that Sony screwed up by making Blu-Ray as a non option on the machine.
In the next generation of consoles HD-DVD & Blu-Ray will be much cheaper and easier to make.
I agree that the Blu-Ray not being optional was a very bad decision by Sony. But is Blu-Ray and HD-DVD a waste of time altogether? Already films and games are becoming downloadable now and we can cope with DVDs as well for now.
the ps3 so far has been a bit of a disaster, high price, lack of exclusive titles, manufacturing issues, delays etc.
but, you all know what will end up happening within a couple of years. the big sequels will appear as ps3 exclusives (ie GT5, MGS4, Tekken6, Final Fantasy etc) and of course GTA4 will be released too.
Everyone and there mums dogs grannies pet fish will buy one, the price will drop to somehting reasonable and the developers will jump on the ps3 bandwagon.
I agree completely with Gabe. And it's not like his statements are without merit. Check out this link and educate yourself on how much of a failure the PS3 has been up to now: http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=25247543&page=0
BTW, that link doesn't even list 25% of all the negative press the PS3 has been getting.
sounds like he's just slagging sony off for publicity. if valve are looking at only developing for the pc, 360 and wii he's got nothing to loose by slagging off the ps3 and everything to gain with pc, 360 and wii fans. i guess that, combined with all the problems sony have been having (i don't know what these are apart from the problem making blu ray drives so i'm just going on people saying the're having problems), is going towards the severity of the comments.

hmm, Gabe is a very big guy, maybe he likes the wii because it's the only way he gets any exercise? i mean we can all scoff at that (oh shall we), but it could well be true!
i consider it somewhat ironic how 'gabe' has the audacity to say 'the disaster that is the ps3,it should be scrapped' ever had the misfortune to use the s**te that is known as 'steam' scrap THAT and start again Valve P.S off topic i know...but my brother recently bought a Wii...oh deary deary me Keep your chins up sony fans...march will be upon us soon and we can lay these 'others' to rest

it's important for true HD movies (not forgeting HD porn! oh come on just one, please!) but for games i don't know if it can make any real difference. anyone know how the access times compare between DVD and HD DVD, Blu Ray? As far as the capacity goes I don't mind swapping discs now and again really. anyway if you use PC you can install masses of a game to the hard disk, so you can have an install disk and a play disk.
Out of the few games mentioned by another poster that will be exclusive on PS3 its looking more likely that only GT 5 could stay exclusive & thats because its a Sony game to begin with.
The high cost of development of games & I would think that given the new hardware that PS3 is probably more expensive to develope for than the 360 A lot of devs just cannot afford to ignore the amount of cash they can make from 360 versions.

to be honest ive been reading quite a bit about this recently, but it has been blown a bit outta proportion...sony dont own sole rights to blu-ray,it was jointly developed by Matsus**ta, Pioneer, Phillips, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, Samsung and Sony ..so im sure a lot of those companies would like to make a profit via porn... also...i dont know anyone really left who buys porn anymore as its readily available on the internet..any techno heads that want porn will down load it..average joe whos not computer savvy/in the know will be just as be happy with DVD...christ theres only so much detail you can get on a c**k an flange you'd have to be pretty sad to want in HD

You've obviously not heard of the new SONY Squirt Toy adapter
Right I think that Gabe needs to look at what he has done, No Episode 2 yet when it was a september release and that s**tty thing called steam, Wow what a stand up guy. If you are gonna say something sucks please say why or at least finish the Halflife story so we give a damn about it.Also who uses their name as a password and let the no. 1 game get nicked, Top guy all round.

hmm... it sounds to me like he is jumping in where john carmack left off.
you all know that john carmack said something similar in another game informer interview right?
GI: You talked a lot about the Xbox 360. What are your thoughts on the PlayStation 3 now that you’ve had more time on it?
Carmack: We’ve got our PlayStation 3 dev kits, and we’ve got our code compiling on it. I do intend to do a simultaneous release on it. But the honest truth is that Microsoft dev tools are so much better than Sony’s. We expect to keep in mind the issues of bringing this up on the PlayStation 3. But we’re not going to do much until we’re at the point where we need to bring it up to spec on the PlayStation 3. We’ll probably do that two or three times during the major development schedule. It’s not something we’re going to try and keep in-step with us. None of my opinions have really changed on that. I think the decision to use an asymmetric CPU by Sony was a wrong one. There are aspects that could make it a winning decision, but they’re not helpful to the developers. If they make the developers say that Sony is going to own the main marketplace, let’s make them develop toward this and build it this way, it would somewhat downplay the benefits of the Xbox 360 and play to the PlayStation 3’s strengths. I suspect they’re not going to overwhelmingly crush the marketplace this time, which wasn’t clear a year ago. A lot of people were thinking it’s going to be a rerun of the last generation, and it’s now looking like it might not be. I’ve been pulling for Microsoft, because I think they’ve done a better job for development support, and I think they have made somewhat smarter decisions on the platform. It’s not like the PlayStation 3 is a piece of junk or anything. I was not a fan of the PlayStation 2 and the way its architecture was set up. With the PlayStation 3, it’s not even that it’s ugly--they just took a design decision that wasn’t the best from a development standpoint.
Out of the few games mentioned by another poster that will be exclusive on PS3 its looking more likely that only GT 5 could stay exclusive & thats because its a Sony game to begin with.
The high cost of development of games & I would think that given the new hardware that PS3 is probably more expensive to develope for than the 360 A lot of devs just cannot afford to ignore the amount of cash they can make from 360 versions.
when are you gonna take the needle off this record ...the repetition is doing my head in here
And your Sony bias rose tinted glasses gets on my t**s as well so STFU
all this flaming ps3. just because they dominated twice you hate them. just like chelsea. ps3 wouldnt even NEED to advertise in the uk to get sales. word goes round and bang. parents will be taking heat off kids and students emptying there loans out.
all this crap about nintendo give me a break. you sit or stand with ur 5 yr old son and play it. the real veteran gamers will witness mgs4 and you can shove pokemon where the sun don't shine. nintendo are pensioners why do ppl think they will still stand a chance dominating in the race. and that valve guy is only praising nintendo cuz he wants to be 'different and clever'. the only 2 consoles. once again who will race are 360 and ps3.

PS3 and the (recently aquired) SNSystems devtools SUCK BIG TIME. C'mon the debugger is the same s**t they trollied out for the SNES!! Yeah, I remember.
In a recent side by side test, one of my esteemed colleagues and I were working on both PS3 and 360. I had to profile some code for PS3.. hmm.. there-in lies the problem.. it didn`t seem to work.. meanwhile my respected "friend" had "pix" (look it up) and the profiler running in under approx 10 mins.. I took 1-2 days to get some kind of (inferior) output from the Pwny devchain (and subsequent (days?...) requests to Pwny for anywhere near the level of RSX support). 360 does it REALTIME "out of the box".
CRAP CRAP CRAP! Time is money to developers.
The whole "Cell is the best, look at the throughput" argument is flawed, as is the "PS3 is better" statement. (XENOS is way more flexible and hmm.. ONLY 192Meg video RAM for the RSX vs the 360 unified memory model? Again, look it up; www.beyond3d.com is a good start).
Developers (you know, the guys who are MAKING the games that you all play) have to spend 2-3 TIMES (very optimistic timescale) the amount of time developing code for the PS3 (to make the game look the same on the PS3!!????).
Which is the most cost effective platform for 90% of developers to develop for? (THINK! PC(100million+) / 360(10million) runs pretty much the same code) Hmm, they might be on to something here!
The (expensive)BDVD vs DVD argument is moot point for Sony ATM, they`ve MUCH bigger problems to address.
Gabe is right, it really does suck ass.
And yeah, they (sony) could package a TURD and sell millions.
Is that really the way to connect with your loyal audience?
I read something very similar about the PS3 games. The dev costs were so high for the PS3 games that NO developers want to make exclusive games for it incase the game flops. Its also the reason why the games for the PS3 dont look much better than the X360, because the games are made to run on them both! and their too expensive for them to be otherwise incase it fails.

SHUT THE F*** UP i dont give a damn bout all that crap u talkin' jus show me the games and i'll make my own mind up, and yes the 360 has the better games at the mo, jus wish they would do somethin' bout that damn noisy fan/drive & that power brick
I'm getting the feeling that a lot of the negativity towards Sony stems from them being at the top for so long.Evryone likes to root for the underdog(Nintendo)and wants to see the big guy(Sony)take a beating.
"other people think im crazy", i wonder why they think that gabe , also remember when the ps2 came out most games were on cd, now there all on dvd for the extra space, sony are thinking bout the future with bluray.
They are thinking about the future but this is the present. Blu Ray is too soon and too expensive. It's just a stop-gap format until all this stuff is downloadable.
Let's have a little objectivity here please children, I've been watching this thread since it started and nowhere has anyone from any side mentioned one thing...regardless of graphics, ease of pragramming or online capability are any of these games actually any FUN? Remember that? The uncool act of just having a laugh and enjoying yourself, without dissapearing up your own a*se whinging about hi-def or surround sound? The simple fact is the most fun I've had out of any game in recent years is Wii sports. I'm no Nintendo fanboy, Oblivion was great and Assasin's Creed looks set to be an amazingly innovative game. I'm seriously worried for the future of the industry if the 'ohhh shiny' brigade manage to take over. Climb down out of your damn ivory towers and try to remember why we play games..it's supposed to be FUN.

Unfortunately Fun seems to get lost in the shuffle of endless updates from EA & more sequels from just about every other dev for fear that any new IP maybe wont sell & with the huge costs of developing games these days its very off putting for a lot of the smaller devs out there.
There has only been a few games that I can truly say have been Fun for me in the last 2 generations which is an unfortunate trend that only looks set to continue as more & more devs play it safe 90% of the time.
But I think that the Wii is on the right track for the most part when it comes to Fun gaming that a broad audience can enjoy & not just for the hardcore among us, but the 360 is getting great titles all the time & the recent addition of my fav fighting series VF coming to 360 has made me proud of Sega for the first time since they went software only.
Can someone please, once and for all, explain to me why anyone gives a s**t about the size of the power brick. Yes, OK, it's quite large, but it sits happily behind my telly and I've not so much as seen it since the day I plugged my 360 in. Why do people keep banging on about it???

Because its one of the only things that doesnt look good about the 360 but I agree I put mine behind the TV unit & have not seen it since so its not a big deal & as for the noise of the fan I cannot hear it when into a good gaming session but some anal people still bitch about it makes no sense really.

you must be deaf, i just think for a Ł280 console they could of done somethin' bout this, late night gaming i notice it the most, when you switch that sucker off it is so quiet, but i spose they rushed out the hardware so there you go, anyway i read microsoft are doing somethin' bout this.
I am not deaf just when im into the game I am playing I am to busy listening to what is happening on screen to pay attention to the poxy fan in the console as long as it does its job I am not bothered at all by it, really why are some people so picky & for the Ł400+ people will pay for the PS3 I think they deserve a lot more than a load of games that have already been available else where for months & maybe a new controler that isnt the same lame 10 year old design that doesn't rip off nintendo & MS with motion sensing & Guide buttons, but there you go
If people bought consoles based on their looks then Sony would not have sold many original PS2's that was an ugly looking console, but not as bad as the Jaguar with its CD drive add on looked like a toilet which is pretty apt considering the fate of the Jaguar

I’m trying to add the toilet adaptor to my collection.
the ps3 so far has been a bit of a disaster, high price, lack of exclusive titles, manufacturing issues, delays etc.
but, you all know what will end up happening within a couple of years. the big sequels will appear as ps3 exclusives (ie GT5, MGS4, Tekken6, Final Fantasy etc) and of course GTA4 will be released too.
Everyone and there mums dogs grannies pet fish will buy one, the price will drop to somehting reasonable and the developers will jump on the ps3 bandwagon.
r u stupid?? the only one i can see bein an exclusive is tekken!!!

Wow do you have issues. Someone posts their 'Real Life' experiences with developing for the PS3 and you tell them to shut the f*** up. I think somebody doesn't want to hear the truth.
Seriously try and learn to respect other people, you wouldn't say that to his face so don't say it on a post.
To all the sony fan boys who are getting so worked out about, he said the same thing about the 360 when that came out, well he didnt go so far though, he did say it was a mistake to not have a HDD in every machine, and also that a 3 core cpu was very difficult to program for.
Without reading all of what he had to say this time, i do think its nothing new in regards to PS3 from developers, i.e. its way too hard to get anything decent running on it and it makes you go round the world for somthing 360 and pc only makes you go round the block for.
both consoles have their pros and cons, the 360 has the better games right now full stop, the ps3 has the better design (quiet, nice disk loader, no power brick) but the games out for it are not that much cop at the mo, i have a 360 right now and if the ps3 turns out to be better in the long run i will trade, i mean i dont need someone who sits on their ass all day making loadsa money to tell me the ps3 is crap! i will decide.

I find it hard to understand how you can be so dismissive of, and abusive towards, the experiences of someone who 'sits on their ass all day making loadsa money' programming games though... Surely his experiences with ACTUALLY WRITING GAMES FOR THE BLOODY THING count for something???
The arguments against the 360 directed at its power supply & apparently extremely noisy loading is so lame first of all & i have said this before my power supply is behind the TV stand where my console is & I cannot even see it so thats not an issue & secondly my 360 is not all that noisy unless its just mine I dont know but when I am into a game & my attention is on the game I do not even notice then supposed noise from the console as I am to busy concentrating on the game i am playing
I find it funny all the people who sign up or first post is in this train wreck of a thread - some people get riled up so easily over something so unimportant.

pleased you took the time to edit out any 'unsavoury' remarks never heard of positive thinking? or do you have a cynical approach to life?(er...or gaming )

well im reading down all these posts and responding if appropriate...(apologies if they're all bunched up)

According to Wikipedia, 'Newell, a "Microsoft millionaire" after working 13 years for the company, founded Valve in 1996 with Mike Harrington, another former Microsoft employee'
His comments seem uncharacteristically blunt for a public statement from a third party software devloper about a major console hardware company.
It looks like further installaments in the Half Life story are more likely on the Xbox360 than the PS3 to say the least.
Other than that, it's another case of somebody who is/was involved with Microsoft praising the Wii.
and last, but not least... Why oh why, do guys(and gals) who support other consoles consistently goto PS3 related media/news and 'flame' it?? im interested...seriously (p.s.. i admit ive done it,once in a blue moon-but usually in retaliation to daft remarks and as a whole i try to be positive) where does this inherent hate derive from, people? (surely a few 'misfired' comments from sony), are hardly reason to see them 'eradicated-business and all'... feel free to add any remarks to i assume this busting thread...lol
Anyone in this forum even used a PS3? Just I have played on one and so far the 360 is winning when games like COD3 and NFS Carbon are shown side by side but lets see what it does when it is as old as the 360.

I'm probably not the person you're really aiming at, and I'd like to think that I don't come across as a rabidly anti-Sony zealot, but what the hell - here's my two cents...
I don't bear any hatred towards Sony. I don't own a PS1 or PS2, and have no interest at present in a PS3, but I do own a PSP and wrote a pretty favourable review of it here (need to log in to the site to read it though I'm afraid). I do however think that that they've made some extremely poor decisions throughout the development of the PS3 (far more than 'a few misfired comments'!), have demonstrated quite breathtaking arrogance regarding the quality of their own products and the devotion of their customers, and as such just do not deserve to retain their massive lead in sales.
But what seems really bizarre to me is that a lot of Playstation fans just lap it all up, and seem to take on Sony's arrogance themselves, and to be honest I struggle to see exactly what Sony have done to inspire such devotion. I mean, yeah, the PS2 has sold a lot of units, and has a huge library of games, and some of them do look pretty good - as I say, I've not owned one myself, but I've played on a few and have almost been swayed towards getting one when looking at games like DMC and GoW... But the XBox and Game Cube (my last-gen console of choice) also had good games, and if anything had a better ratio of good games to bad than the PS2 - be fair, there was a huge amount of tat churned out on it, wasn't there? I've not really heard any stories of Sony really going the extra mile in customer support or anything, not that really sets them above MS or Nintendo anyway. So, while we're being all reconciliatory, perhaps you can explain that one to me - what exactly is so amazing about the Sony gaming experience that gets people so worked up?
I think that's what does it for me really - the arrogance of it all. As a case in point, matey earlier who told the games programmer to 'shut the f**k up' for giving his (OK it was strongly worded but) expert experience of actually coding for the PS3 matey has such an obvious hard-on for - I have to say that really made my s**t hang sideways! I had typed out a slightly more aggressive response but didn't post it in the end...
As far as the PS3 in particular is concerned - as I said at first, I don't want one at the moment. I don't think it looks s**te or anything but I don't think it's going to be as amazing as all the fanboys seem to think - which seems to be borne out by some of the rather lacklustre reviews coming out of the US.
There are some PS3 games that I think do look very interesting (Lair in particular does look good. I do like my dragons - but I think they missed a golden opportunity to use the AD&D Dragonlance world) but I don't see enough titles coming along that justify buying one, and I also don't see any titles that look amazing enough to justify the far higher price than the 360. So yeah, same story as before really - I don't really have anything against the PS3 itself, I just don't get what the big fuss is about and why so many PS3 fans are so arrogant about their console and why they feel the need to get so aggressive towards everyone else. If I ever come across as being a Sony hateboy (opposite of fanboy???), it's probably because I've been wound up by something like this...
At the end of the day though, we're all gamers, whether it be on Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo or PC hardware, and have far more drawing us together than we have pushing us apart. So I say, gamers of the world, let us unite and take on the sportsmen! Look at them, with their rippling muscles, taut lycra and glowing tans - the healthy t**ts!
is it just me or didn't the ps3 well out at launch how on earth is this a failure in anybody's book despite hardware shortages they have sold over 1.1 million ps3's in 2 months
Sony has announced that the company has Shipped 1 million PlayStation 3 consoles to north america
One retailer spoke to me on condition of anonymity, and broke down his version of the situation. "It's not that we've gotten more PS3s than Wiis, it's just that no one wants them.

Sorry new here and dont know how to post lazylinks
Im with CJW on this just what is all the excitement about?
And i have said this many times but the Sony barmy army just start saying oh you fanboy etc..
I visit the 360 forum as well as the general games forum but just because im not more excited than someone who has just won the lotto about PS3 people cry fanboy, the reason for my attitude towards the PS3 is simply the sheer arrogance & what is it that they are arrogant about exactly? I mean the machine looks ok although I think they are quite large in size, but the games at the moment just dont make me feel any buzz about how Super it is supposed to be & after playing some of the titles on import I was left underwhelmed & dissapointed the 360's launch games were only good & not groundbreaking but at least with titles like PGR 3 & Kameo in terms of visuals you got a taste for things to come & with PS3 games looking no better & in some cases worse than 360 there is just nothing exciting about it to me

100 million people own PS2s - not all of them foam at the mouth at the slightest negative comment though! I can understand people defending something they like, but it's just that the reaction seems so disproportionate.
Plonkman is a dev on the PS3, working on quite a high profile game at that.
It's amusing to see people dismiss what was a side by side comparison of the tools on the two platforms in our office.
At the end of the day it's not going to be what us dev's think that decide what we work on. It'll be the public driving it through platform sales and unfortunately, as seen in this thread, the PS3 may do quite well considering the number of people who are completely blind to what is being said by the development community.
But, who am I to say anything on the subject against the some of the naysayers around here who probably haven't even seen a PS3 other than online yet.
In answer to Seedripper's earlier question about why people comment on the PS3 news, I can give my own views if not everyone's.
I can see how people (on both 'sides') can get wound on what has been said but simply having a forum for PS3 only fans is pretty much the same as saying "my opinion is absolute and no should disagree with me".
I've owned a PS1 and loved it to bits. I bought a PS2 and while it wasn't the same, it did have some cracking games. However, the next gen is here and I have to chose a new system to play games on for the next few years. However, I'm simply not going to go and get a PS3 because it's the next in line. I'm a gamer first and foremost and not at fan to any system. I'll look at the pro's and cons and make my decision based on that.
And if I'm being entirely honest, Sony haven't impressed me in the run up to their "worldwide" launch, their broken promises, seemingly disorganised development which has all the hallmarks of being a doomed system. I obviously don't wish the system to perish like the dreamcast did as competition is vital to this industry.
What I don't get is how supposed fans of the PS3 are prepared to support it so blindly even with such failings? If for example, Chelsea or bottomnal or whoever starts getting draws and then losses and then really bad results, the team will get booed by the fans as they know they are capable of much more. Same goes for Sony. We've seen what they are capable of doing with the PS1. If I were a fan of Sony, I'd be booing them now. They've underperformed and are taking a beating.
However as I've said, I'm a gamer first. I want to see results, not specs. Once the PS3 has been out for a few months, I'll cough up then based on which system offers me more.
Referring to Amasythe, I've not played on a PS3 but I seen one running RR7 in our local CEX which to be honest didn't look any different to the 360 version of RR6. However, I will say that it could have been down to perhaps the flat screen LCD (couldn't see a make) or a lazy port on namco's behalf. Until I see a side by side running of similar games on the 2 systems, I can't really comment on my personal experiences other that the above.
Thanks for the vote of confidence, Crow - although I am now vaguely concerned that you find poetry sensible...
Wish I'd thought of the football supporter analogy, that was pretty damn good.
I'd like to draw another analogy if I may, and it's a pretty risky one. To me, Playstation seems to be the gaming equivalent of Islam. It's appeared relatively recently on the scene compared to its rivals, and has since exploded in popularity. Many of it's followers are extremely devout, but possibly not particularly well educated about matters outside of their own limited experience. The vast majority of its followers are good people and are moderate in their beliefs, but there is an extremist fringe that goes too far. Unfortunately as they are the most vocal it tends to be their views that are perceived as the views of the whole community, a problem which is compounded by the seeming failure of the moderate majority to curb the extremists within their ranks - or perhaps they secretly agree with the extremists after all???
Sorry to upset anyone before but I`ve been banging my head against this Pwny toolchain for months now and having had a couple of glasses of plonk.. "it all came out".
I guess that all the PS3 stuff will all come out in the wash. We`ll all see... I may even buy one (when they`re less than 200 quid).
Until then I hope and pray that Sony will start to provide tools on par with the MS ones to help developers harness all this "power".
"Many of it's followers are extremely devout, but possibly not particularly well educated about matters outside of their own limited experience." (im a little concerned about the 'muslim' analogy )

I was quite surprised myself at just how well it all seemed to fit as I was writing it actually! Did have a brief moment of 'oh crap, what have I just said???' but looking back I think I phrased things carefully enough to avoid mortally offending most people. Might hopefully make a few people think about how they come across though!
good, its the awful truth, apologists can talk about how the developers will "learn" how to use this cell chip, yea right, maybe they'll squeeze some power out by the time xbox 720 comes out. the problem of multithreading games is hard enough, and sony increases the burden by creating an uneven chip where all the cores are not equivalent, and where the memory isn't viewed coherently. developers will have to spend time and resources that could have been used to create more game content to wrestle with this chip. and with multiplatform games they probably just wont bother, i wont be worth the resources spent so the ps3 will end up with inferior graphics.
never mind sonys anti consumer tendencies. they are the RIAA/MPAA after all, sony music, sony films. and you can see their influence with how they destroyed their ipod competitor. worse is how they just keep trying to push proprietary formats on consumers, minidisc, memory stick, betamax, umd, and now bluray. trying to launch a HEAVILY DRM'd format on the backs of gamers is rather sleazy. a format that kills all fair use and makes you the movie companies b*tch is not something we should support. atleast microsoft gives you a choice with hddvd. never mind that the MPAA/RIAA sue their customers for basically jaywalking. do you see microsoft sueing their customers for pirated copies of windows? i know people thinking they are all evil corporations, but in this case microsoft comes up on top. if you don't support the RIAA/MPAA sueing people for 700 dollars damage a song, don't buy sony.

Ok, well like my analogy said, would you not be a little peeved if your console of choice was a bit pricier than expected or didn't live up to the billing it's manufacturer was spouting out?
I don't want Sony to fail, remember I owe a PS1 and PS2 (that one from launch) but I'm really disappointed in what the PS3 is offering.
Obviously, games are a big thing and one of the stumbling blocks for a new system so the PS3's Gears of Wars or Zelda will come out in time. What I am concerned about is the risks involved. I want a service like live, I want to be able to have a universal friends list, I want it to be sensibly priced, I want a proven drive put in there. Granted, HD-DVD isn't proven either but at least I have the choice of whether I want it or not.
Like I said before, I'm not a fan of a particular system but I do like what sony have done in the past. Some PSone games are still some of the fondest memories I have but recent efforts to be quite blunt have tarnished that. Obviously, I'm not out to convert anybody, people have their own minds and their own wants but surely the PS3 is pushing the limits of that?
Valve has been always a strong MS allie. That's the simple reason the guy says that.
No matter how you see it, Valve is nothing compared to other software-houses. Valve's market is PC and Xbox, two MS platforms and this is "nothing" when compared to the PSOne, PS2, PSP and PS3 market.
What I think is that people who wanted a Xbox 360, bought it. The 360 sales are going to stop. The Wii is a sucess and it will be the machine people will buy for "fun". All the rest is waiting for the PS3 or gathering the money to buy it.
Playstation brand = Videogame Console. And this is all over the world. People could have a Xbox and still say to their friends 'I'm gonna play on my Playstation'. It's the brand. Harcore gamers know the diference, casual gamers buy what they know.
It's like the fact that no one ask for a Pepsi You ask for Coke, and if there's nothing else, you drink Pepsi.
And in my opinion, nothing's lost for Sony. Just give it some time and thinks will come arround. The PS3 has is wick-ups on launch, but it will take off.

finally a sensible comment!
Sensible? no, & here is why even when I am just browsing in games shops I see more & more people asking about all the different consoles its not just a Playstation anymore these people may not be aware of all the differences but the people are asking more questions about the other platforms its like when someone buys a handheld they see PSP but are 99% of the time more intrigued by the DS When PS3 is sitting on shelves next to the 360 & most people the "casual" gamers see the massive price difference & not any really noticable difference in the graphics of either platforms they will start to question just why is PS3 so much more expensive & when I have seen shop assistants try to explain Bluray etc to people before now most of them do not have a clue about it much less want to spend the better part of Ł500 just because the latest PS has it a lot of people do not even have a HDTV to enjoy it on anyway,
I think that a lot of people this time round that just usually buy for the brand will be asking a lot more questions when they visit their local Game to by a console this time around & games wise PS3 has no real high calibre exclusives at launch that make it stand out over the 360 & multi format titles will never likely make use of the supposedly super cell chip as the cost is to prohibitive to the developers to spend that kind of cash.
Even the Casual gamers are not the Sheep they once were you know & Wii & 360 have a lot going for them depending on what you want from a console & if people have the PS3 kind of money they can get both the other platforms with some software for the price of just the PS3 on its own

Spot on. and the Blueray drive on the PS3 is just Sony using the playstation fanbase to push their new format. Its not needed for gaming lets be honest.
Lets everybody pay Microsoft for every step they make and then slam those that doesnt !
yea lets pay sony for every c**kup they make instead
You pay Sony for the hardware .And developers of games a royalties for game sold in the system . Period .You can buy non-official accesories as USb keyboards ,mouses ,headsets ,the online is free ,the operative system is Linux ,the graphics library is OpenGL (free software ) ...
developers have to pay them for developing over Windows ,graphics artists have to pay them for using their graphic libraries Direct X ,consumers have to upgrade their cards because DirectX is getting linked to new generation of video cards ,publishers have to buy the XNA tools and license of DirectX ,to pay Microsoft royalties for game sold ,pledge into the closed online system of MS and having Microsoft administrate the benefits and decide what do you merit and what you dont ,and consumers will have to pay for the hardware ,the official accesories (why bother making the console compatible with PC when official accesories are more expensive ?) ,the games ,for playing online ,for the HD-DVD add-on and so on
I couldn't care less if the developers have to pay Microsoft. I dont mind paying ÂŁ40 a year for the best online service ever created. To be honest, as long as Microsoft keep throwing great games my way, Gates can stay the richest man in the world.
I think it is quite annoying that Microsoft has made it so you need a whole new type of card to run directX 10 and play the new generation of games, but if they hadnt, we wouldnt be moving anywhere. I mean, graphics are good, but theres only so much you can improve on before you start running out of power and utilities to develop with.
Sony are idiots, the PS3 had so much potential. It has an incrediable amount of power, it looks incredible, it has some pretty good features, this time round, it has a decent online function. But because theyve made it so powerful that it costs them more to make it than they will be able to see it for, and they lose $200 for every console sold, I've lost alot of faith in them. I mean, its only $200, but jsut think of the amount of consoles theve already sold is Us and Japan, and when its released in Europe its gonna sell a whole load, theyve lost a rediculous amount of money. I think there going to screw themselves over. They get no royalties for developing on there graphics library, cos its freeware, they get no royalties for developing on there OS, cos thats free too. And, because of how difficault it is for developers to make games on their console, alot of companies are pulling out of making games for it. And the more money they lose, the more faith developers will lose in them, meaning sony will lose more money still. Theyve got themselves into a downwards spiral.
Kids and women = Wii Losers = Xbox 360 Real Gamers = PS3
Gee, when its laid out so carefully in a formula like this, it's just so clear....hes a kn*b end !
I honestly hope against hope that respected developers like valve and carmack are wrong, and they just arent that good after all, and Sony went all out to listen to consumers and developers before creating the perfect box of tricks. We will all be better off with strong competition so lets hope PS3 and 360 have a good tussle for top spot.
"...only the stupid would buy a poor product purely because of it's badge."
Hmm, this happens everyday, in every walk of consumer life, and many other aspects of life too come to that. I mean 5 billion sheep (and rising) can't be wrong... can they now.
NB. The above comment is blindly optimistic that at least a billion people on this planet have their freewill and common sense intact.
Working retail I can tell you in at least my little corner of the world the damn ps3s DO NOT SELL, nobody wants them. They sell about as well as the PSP's and if we get another shipment there is no room for them in the stockroom so they'll probably have to be sent back.
The Nintendo case is oddly absent of DS lites, and Wiis. Hell we can't even keep the peripherals in for either the Wii or the DS, and the 360 is selling at a fairly steady rate (and sold quite well over Christmas)
Newell is right, the PS3 is a failure - Sony predicted them to be out of stock for a LONG TIME, and it's been over 2 weeks since we've sold a single one. Sold 48 Nintendo wii's this morning though (people showed up before the store opened)
Maybe Final Fantasy XIII can save it, who knows, all I know is that with a new Xbox360 with HDMI and TIVO capabilities coming out in a few months, the PS3 will have an uphill battle.
all I have to say is, ignore the PC game developers who cant be bottomd learning to develop for a different platform and wait and see what console is number one in 3 years time.
I remember everyone saying exactly the same things about the PS2 and look what happened there.
all I have to say is, ignore the PC game developers who cant be bottomd learning to develop for a different platform and wait and see what console is number one in 3 years time.
Erm, ..I think Half Life is quite a popular little cult game, and Valve software may know a teeny bit about making games...perhaps ?
I heard some other keen bedroom hobbyists, one of them was called id software, also said the PS3 wasnt as easy to develop on as 360.
No matter how you see it, Valve is nothing compared to other software-houses. Valve's market is PC and Xbox, two MS platforms and this is "nothing" when compared to the PSOne, PS2, PSP and PS3 market.
I would love to know how you can consider Valve "nothing".
They are the developer and publisher of the biggest FPS franchise EVER - fact. They also are at the forefront of downloadable gaming with their steam service. Valve are a powerful and experienced company, and I believe Half Life DID make its way too PS2, so they are not in anyway MS fanboys....I'm sure they've been looking at PS3 and 360 because we will inevitably see a HL2 port.
OK, i own a ps3, and i also own all the other playstation consoles (including psp), so you could call me a sony fanboy. And to be honest, calling the ps3 a complete failure is a bit of a joke. I spent Ł300 on my ps3, and god knows how much on the games, and so far, the only disapointment was when my blu-ray driver broke, and had to be replaced, but that was my bad luck. Why would so many people buy the ps3 if it is such a failure? there is no argument, as a console and on the market, the ps3 is a success, millions have purchased it, in half the time of the 360, and sonly have gone bust have they? i think this guy has some sort of ploblem with sony, not the ps3. And i love valve, Half life is awsome, so this post pains me somewhat!
ok, i usually dont care much about these console wars, because clearly the ps3 is a better system performance, (CPU has more processing cores at a higher clock speed, and the GPU is amazing, look at MGS4, killzone 2) i think the only reason ps3 is doing s**t is because microsoft launched the 360 way earlier than the ps3 was launched, and at that time, the only "epic" game was halo, so more people wanted 360's at the time. - these specs are proven as well, im not winging them off the top of my head...
BUT aside from all of that, i have something to say to all you idiots out there who think an xbox 360 is cheaper than a ps3.
Ps3 - $399 (blu-ray, true 1080p HDMI high def, some excellent exclusives, killzone 2, MGS4.) DOWNSIDE, apparently it is hard to dev for the ps3 because of its technology, but i know nothing of that. FREE TO PLAY online. Nicely sized harddrives with plenty of extra room, (80GB etc) Higher processing core clock speed and a better GPU (video card) for slight performance advantages noticable in games like MGS4, Killzone.
Blu-Ray discs hold 50 something GB of data, while the xboxs DVD's hold only 8GB (Fun Fact: the DVD/CD was created by Sony) This will be really noticable in Final Fantasy 13, the xbox version will be spaced out over 4 discs, while the ps3 will be on 1 single disc.
xbox 360 Pro - $299, -XBOX LIVE - $60 a year -Wireless anyone? - $90 -Batteries (LOL) - i have no idea how much batteries cost cause i dont need to buy any.
Xbox has an advantage with its online, but its failure rate (RROD) is approx. 87% higher in a 2 year span according to an IGN.com study.
so right there your spending about $430+ on a 360, ($970 after 10 years of live) and you still dont get all the features the ps3 has.
xbox has lots of exclusives, however in my opinion, there not as "quality" orientated as some of the ps exclusives. Killzone>Gears , MGS4>Halo3 (except online), ps has ratchet and Final fantasy, xbox has lots more less-popular exclusives. sorry if im forgetting some but none are coming to me right now..
now those are facts. pure hard cold facts. but MY opinion is, If you have lots of friends that play 360 online, OR if playing online or online features are appealing to you get an xbox.
If its Price, Media, free-to-play online, reliability (failure rate wise) bigger harddrives etc that your after. ps3 is the way to go.
I HAVE A 360 PRO AND A 80GB PS3, (no wii though, traded it for a 360) And after owning both consoles for elongated periods of time, i am proud to say that YES ! I AM A PLAYSTATION FANBOY.
P.S. about 45 minutes ago, my friends 360 got the RROD and he wanted to ship it to microsoft to get it fixed and he was informed it will take 4-5 weeks to get it returned. DAMMMM no console for the whole summer....
And to this valve dev guy, i love half life and all the valve games but you really lost respect from me for low balling sony like that. (Respect-13)
