Xbox Live Video Marketplace to make $726 Million

North America-only XBL download service to rake in the dosh for MS, report suggests
In a report titled 'Spotlight on Television 2.0 Leaders: Microsoft Corporation' published by Emerging Media Dynamics, Microsoft is estimated to make an astonishing $726 Million from Xbox Live movie and TV revenue by 2011.

Emerging Media Dynamics expects the Xbox Live video download service to grow massively over the next 12 months, with combined revenue of TV shows and movies via Xbox Live touted at $92.25 million in 2007, growing further each year until total sales top the $726 million figure in 2011, it is predicted.

Xbox Live Video Marketplace is currently only available in North America, where Xbox 360 users can download standard and high-definition television shows and 'rent' movies for single-viewing only.

There's currently no news on when - or if - Video Marketplace will make it over to the UK, but seeing as the recently-accounced Xbox 360 IPTV servicehas been confirmed for our shores, we'd be surprised if Video Marketplace service didn't make the trip as well.

i have to say i dont understand all this. if it works in the US why not link the bit of us web site to uk web site. shouldnt it be that easy for us to access the same thing?
roger4000 on 16 Jan '07
They did annouce it for europe saying 'early 2007' so anytime before april then! not sure what countries but can imagine uk, spain, france and germany being the first ones.
jaycee900 on 16 Jan '07
It's probably to do with licencing and local law.

The same way that not all trailers/demos/gamerpics etc aren't available everywhere.

Not to mention the fact that speeds here still aren't high enough on average and FAR too many people here go with broadband packages that have single figure monthly download limits.

I think I used about 60gig last month, I dread to think what it'd be if I used IPTV and VOD.

...and Ireland of course.
If the UK gets something, we usually do too.
Thanks for sharing lads. Smile

Xbox Live Video Marketplace to make $726 Million...

..By 2011

You guys should work in advertising, or for a tabloid.

Ugh, typical journalists..

Give Microsoft a call with your 360 serial number and they will let you know if it’s out of warranty.

You could alway try wrapping it in a towel undefinedhttp://www.engadget.com/2007/01/15/towel-trick-provides-temporary-fix-to-xbox-360s-red-ring-of-d/undefinedundefined

Well yes that is the general concept for anything when the warranty's run out.

I (like most) didn't do more than glance at the extended warranty leaflet in the packaging, so if my console goes, I'll have to pay the full amount for any repairs too.
AlexRat on 16 Jan '07
ah c**k,
well journey shall be played at the funeral the little bugger loved them!!

While it is easy to link t he us stuff to the uk version of live, they havn't done so yet, because many of the copy right holders of the programs and movies do not wish for us to view their content in this country, since they make alot of movie by flogging said programs and film rights to tv companies right now.

Do you think Sky would be happy if all of a sudden we could download 24, lost, stargate, atlantis all new series from the states instead of paying for a sky sub and dish? i dont think they would be too happy over that, they would lose viewers, they would lose advertisers for all their prime shows, this is just an example, hence why after well over a year of being able to download tv shows on itunes, the service has still to be introduced to the uk market.

With films its a tad easier in the rights department, but it is still difficult due the fact that certain films it can takes months for them to be released into the pictures here and the same goes with dvd.
The_Hun1 on 16 Jan '07
Actually we often get Stargates before the US.

Infact the last TV episode (no further series to be made, however TV movies/straight-to-dvd planned) of Stargate SG-1 was shown the other day. It won't be on in America until early April.

Ok I'm showing my true geekiness now *shuts up*.

I know that, in america they have a mid season break of a few months around about xmas time, hence why we are now ahead of them in terms of stargate and atlantis episodes on skyone, what i was meaning is we wont be able to download it legally on anything in this country till after skyone have shownen it all, same reason why the dvd release wont happen till later this year aswell.

As for the movies planned, ive already read up on them both and i look forward to being geekyer when they get released
The_Hun1 on 16 Jan '07
Why would you want to spend HOURS, possibly an enitre afternoon or day, downloading a film, only to watch it ONCE and that be that. Confused
Moby_696 on 16 Jan '07
Well for those of us willing to invest in a decent connetion it wouldn't be hours (well for standard def), I can get a gig in about 15 min. And it's only a matter of time before Xbox Live supports simultaneous downloading and viewing.

I live in a rural area and can now get 8meg (actually get about 6.5 - 7, but that doesn't worry me) which was unthinkable only a year ago. Hell we've only been able to GET broadband here for coming on 2 years, before that we could only get 28K. There are already areas that residential users can get 22/26Meg.

I wasn't aware you could only watch them once, I thought there was a period of days in which you could view it however many times you wanted. So I'll have to look into that.

Tv shows you can keep for all time, movies you can watch once and thats it, just think of the movie downloads like a rental of a film from blockbuster, without having to go to blockbusters.
The_Hun1 on 16 Jan '07
Wikipedia: "..movies are only "rentals"; they will become unwatchable 24 hours after initial viewing or 14 days after purchase."

Xbox.com: "Once you start watching the video, it switches over to the 24-hour countdown clock. You can watch the video as often as you like until it expires."

Much like recording Sky Box Office movies on Sky+. It's stored for 7 days, but once you play part of it there's a 24 hour timer.
