Nintendo to offer original game downloads for Wii

CVG gets Nintendo's response to 'New Game Channel' rumours
A statement made by Hudson Entertainment's director of marketing, John Lee, in an interview with Game Informer, sparked a rumour that Nintendo could be making a new 'Games Channel' for Wii through which it will deliver new downloadable games.

When asked if Hudson plans to release any original content through the Virtual Console, Lee responded: "Well, the VC was specifically designed to bring back classic games, not to introduce new content. So to answer your question specifically: No.

"However, in the future, you should rephrase that question to: Are there any plans to launch original content on some downloadable service on the Wii, and you might get a different answer."

Curious as to what he may have meant by that, CVG contacted Nintendo and got this response: "Nintendo has developed a programming system that will allow small independent developers to make games for Wii download service.

"We cannot confirm at this time in what format the new content will be delivered, but in the future there will be original games available for download through the Wii Shop."

For those of you who don't know, Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, spoke of such a development tool at various games events last year, allowing low-cost game production for Wii. Anyone who got hooked on Geometry Wars on 360 knows how exciting this prospect is.

It's currently unknown when the proposed original game content will be made available to download, although it is unlikely that they'll be delivered through the Virtual Console.

It's what people want, original games.

Even Xbox Live has rehashed classics and PopCap games you can find for free on the net, yet you're charged around £4 for them.

I think people would be willing to pay that for original games, if they're any good obviously.

Yeah but at least on the 360 the games have added extra's, like HD, online multiplayer, online scoreboards etc etc so to me compared to the wii VC the 360 games are better value, though old coin op games like pacman still dont warrent a purchase whatever system there on.
jaycee900 on 26 Jan '07
its exactly what id like, especially from nintendo, ive been dreaming of a PROPER sequel to a link to the past since it was released, minish cap was good and so was the other varios GB games, but they was mere crap compared to lttp, phantom hourglass looks gd but im talking the same graphics, engine etc, and also super mario bros.4 a new one, like 3, not like the gba crappy port, i think the prospect is very exciting because it would be nes-snes graphics games but new, which would appeal to the older gamer aswell
topguy4 on 26 Jan '07
Yes, we have known Wii was capable of this for some time now. Everyone is just wondering when the original VC games would start showing up.

The majority of Live Arcade titles are absolute crap and their release schedule is a mess. Hopefully Nintendo will slot the original content in with the VC releases and drop a couple of decent titles a week rather than one every month or two filling the rest of the supposed release days with sub-standard crap.
I don't get what happened to Live Arcade, they had so many decent original and retro titles lined up yet they still keep releasing s**t instead.

If Nintendo does the same for their original content (except the HD part), then that would make them worth the cost I suppose, but not everyone is interested in playing those kind of games in multiplayer or are that bothered about online leaderboards, so added extra's are a bit of a moot point in my opinion.

Thats a bit unfair as there are some good games on there including Assualt Heroes, Doom, Geometry wars, marble blast, heavy weapon, uno, streetfighter 2, lumines and a few others that are decent..the point is the better games are starting to flow since early december with other classics inc metal slug, sensi soccer, mad tracks and countless others being added everyweek (check this site for every known live title undefinedhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_Live_Arcadeundefined, yes the schedule is pretty poor but its improving, i mean 2 emulated untouched releases from nintendo is hardly pushing the boat out is it!?

Yes, there are a few good games on Live Arcade but the majority of them are filler.
To be honest, I'd rather have a few untouched classic games than a lot of 'original' rubbish or poor retro titles with varnish and leaderboards.
Like I said before, they seem to have a lot of decent games 'in the pipeline'... though this fabled pipeline seems to be the one running through Belarus given the time it's taking to see any of them.
I had high hopes for Arcade Wednesdays but I constantly seem to shut down my machine on a wednesday disappointed... either by a p**s-poor release or by no release at all (I doubt I'm the only one that doesn't think Lumines skins count as a game).
Just hope the original content Wii channel flows a bit better.

I'm 31 yrs. old and I remember with great fondness the hours spent in front of my Nintendo64. Can anyone say RiverRaid? I'm so glad these games are coming back. http://techtipsandstuff.wordpress.com

The good thing about original games for downloads will be that devs are more likely to take risks with how they use the wii remote. In fact some of the mini/micro games in Warioware could be expanded in to games that would suit this kind of service.

I remember Iwata making the point that the Wii would be great for Indie developers, but I never quite heard exactly how that would be.

I've not much interest in the VC at the moment - I'd probably rather get the games for from the N64 era on the N64 again, or get the ones I missed out on, and the conversion rubbish we're getting doesn't help.

I remember J4 talking about this sort of thing to me a couple of months ago, and it sounds like a great idea. It would be nice to get easier to develop games through such a download service, and Joey suggested more of the classic style of games Nintendo created on the N64 getting sequels and the like - now Twlight Princess was supposed to be the last of the classic Zelda style, but perhaps we could expect more of the classic type in original form.

The idea of the Virtual Console is that the games are exactly like you played them when they were originally released. Besides, adding extras would surely bump up the cost?

You're forgetting New Super Mario Bros on DS! It's an entirely new game and is loads better than the old games!

I WANT GAME BOY GAMES ON THE WII VC LIST

Ooh! GameBoy games could be downloaded through the Virtual Console or uploaded from cartridges with some kind of adapter and then sent wirelessly to your DS so you can play them on the small screen and on the go!

I'm a genius!

Here in time for the holidays, another reason for gamers and responsible payday loan enthusiasts to celebrate, and another reason to get your hands on a Playstation 3, or PS3, Sony has just unveiled a new program for the PS3, called Home. Home is Sony's avatar program, similar to the one that comes with both the Nintendo Wii and the Xbox 360, which allows users to create their own virtual representation of themselves. PS3's is a little different, well, its actually a lot different, because users can create their own online version of themselves, complete with housing, clothes, music, and there's even an online store where they can purchase things like bigger houses, more clothing, furniture, etc, except you have to pay real money for that stuff. The Home program is part avatar software, and part online world, similar to Second Life or Runescape, and users can interact with the online world, playing mini-games within the program, or chat with other players via text and video messaging. Home remains in the beta stage currently, though it was released December 11th. The online houses even feature trophy rooms, where the player's gaming accomplishments are displayed. Some people decry the online world programs like Home, claiming it takes away from the real world. (Then again, what form of entertainment doesn't?) Others see it as a an online home away from home, a tool, like no fax payday loans are a financial tool, to escape the doldrums with an online home away from home. Click to read more on Payday Loans.
