Epic considers "spectacular" console-exclusive content for UT3

Unreal Tournament producer talks PS3 and Xbox 360 exclusive downloads for rocket-flinging shooter
Epic games hasn't ruled out exclusive patch content for the console versions of Unreal Tournament 3, producer Jeff Morris has revealed in an interview with CVG.

Morris told CVG that while UT3 will have the same content and likely be "the same sort of size" on PC and consoles, exclusive content could come in patches.

"While we want all of the versions to be the same that's not to say we won't do exclusive patches for each platform and that would enable us to do some pretty spectacular exclusive content," he said.

"We don't know the exact number of maps we'll ship with but we want it to be between 30 and 40 - that's substantially more than other games in the genre."

this would be a bad thing i believe.

epic have already said that you will be able to have cross-platform games of ut3, so what would be the point of putting exclusive content onto the consoles Sad

if they can get away with providing exclusivity and still provide the 'core game' can be played across platform, then they will.

What's the effing point? All they're doing is spending time developing this new content, and then denying it to two-thirds of their customers!

Goddamn marketing gits have got far too much time on their hands. It's not like they're gonna sell anymore copies just for a couple of extra maps.
SunScramble on 3 Feb '07
Huh, what "other games in the genre"? Unreal Tournament's basically a genre all of it's own.

this all smells of fish, rotten fish

I blame that guy who works for Epic. The one who's an idiot. I forget his name, because he's an insignificant little worm in the grand scheme of things, but he definitely seems to be sucking some serious console-k**b.
Reverend_Joseph on 4 Feb '07
I guess they would have to make up for the fact that you would be playing it on a controller...

That'd be Mark "The PS3 is amazing because it looks good on the outside, people aren't interested in gameplay they just like shiny graphics, Gamers don't know what they want, we do" Rein.

I think, if they'll release exclusive content for the consoles, and it would be good on the PCs as well, modders will create similar mods. Smile
NecrosHUN on 4 Feb '07
I think that Epic would be better off releasing joint bonus packs for all three systems, and then run a scheme whereby they pick the most popular/best mods for the PC version, and give the modders a little help to get them running on the consoles, and decent distibution channel to get the mods to the console owners.

That way, everyone's a winner.
SunScramble on 4 Feb '07
I suspect the "exclusive content" will be character models, rather than maps or new gameplay modes.

I have to say I have become somewhat disillusioned with UT3 of late. Cross-platform developments have never been a good thing, in my eyes, and Epics console versions of the Unreal Tournament games have never really been up to much, when compared to their bigger brothers on the PC.

This isn't a good thing, I don't think.
