Things are looking up for the PlayStation 3 in Japan this week, as stellar Sega bruiser instalment Virtua Fighter 5 blasts up the charts to snatch the console's first ever number one.
The fighter beat off Nintendo titles Wii Sports, Wii Play, Brain Age and New Super Mario Brothers for the top slot, selling 48,000 copies since it was released in the country almost two weeks ago.
Despite blitzing the competition in the sales charts though, the Wii continues to dominate Sony's console on the hardware front with 78,550 units shifted this week, compared to the PS3's 32, 175 and the Xbox 360's paltry 4,811.
The fifth fighting instalment hit US shelves just yesterday, and is currently pencilled in for a European debut alongside the PS3 next month. If you're still wondering what all the fuss is about, click on over to our VF5 review for the low-down.
Wow what a surprise a new Virtua fighter game tops the sales charts in Japan who didn't see that happening?
Its good news for Sony though so I am sure some people will crow on about it but VF has always been the Japanese preffered fighting series over the likes of Tekken DOA & suol calibur & the latest installment taking the top spot is not a huge surprise what I would like to know is how many people bought the console at the same time as buying this particular game? or is it just the early adopters who have snatched it up to give a quick sales spike only to fall off the top spot 2 days later?
Oh & I will be waiting on the 360 version which will be slightly better...And before all the Fanboys start it will be slightly better because the PS3 version is based around version B of the arcade & the 360 version is based around the slightly more up to date Version C.
Just thought I would mention it & seed no I could not resist it

Well fair play to Sony! but ffs Rich any news on the PS3 and you have to open your pie hole and look like a t*at!!!! Please people dont trust what this noob says! both 360 and PS3 versions of the game will be the same if anything! Mr Rich just loves to start a flame war.
PS3 is starting to bloom. It will dominate, just accept it Ninty fanboys!
See, that's what a decent games company can do when they put their mind to it. After all those doubting Toms were slagging it off, this company has come back and really stuck one on Nintendo haven't they ?
Lol, they haven't anything on Nintendo. It's PS3's first number 1 that they have had in Japan (when was it released there...?) and it's not an exclusive. Those arcade-beat'em ups will always do well over in Japan too, especially Virtua Fighter.
hehehe well well, sony has 1 pS3 title in top 30... hey did u guys know that nintando has 26 in top 30?thats right! Sony had one game doing well for PS3 bt all the nintendo games released in december are still at the top, and hwen they get DQ:IX then lets see who goes best. plus nintendo sold SEVENTY SOMETHING THOUSAND consoles compared to Sony's 23,000, less than the PSP. so i mean, 1 game does not make the console a winner, specially cause Wii and DS are selling more. shame 360 does make big sales there. its a good console too. i have nothing against PS3 but its not dominating. well, we'll leave it up to u guys to say what u think about it. sorry to disapoint u guys.
I don't know why Microsoft even bother in all honesty.
Just annoy fanboys like you I assume...
But seriously, why do they bother with Japan? What do the Japanese know about gaming, they only buy homegrown systems and then only limited genres of games. Hardly unbiased are they.
I think it's odd, as when you look at pretty much any japanese manga or game, the characters tend to look western- but wearing ridiculous outfits. But as soon as anything that has even been touched by a westerner appears over there, it bombs (apart from the original star wars films)
They're an odd bunch. I don't really care what's big in japan though- I don't enjoy the games they do- unsuprisingly. I used to absolutley love Manga like Akira and Ghost in the Shell- but now i look at the new DVD releases and apart from being practically the same, they're all rubbish.
Just because im a ninty fanboy doesn't mean i can't congratulate the rare occurence of sony doing well without slagging off them and their pathetic attempt at a - oops. Couldn't resist...
Everyone deserves their turn in the sun though, wheteher it be miyamoto or ken kutaragEVIL.
WOW finally is this some GOOD PS3 news!!!!!......... well, no....not really, i mean a brand new Playstation console that only came out in it mother land a few months ago has a good title thats selling well.... it's not really even news worthy,... but with all the bad press resently, you take what you can, when u can...

Its a shame it will cost you twice as much to play the game on a psŁ

According to 1Up the 360 will have extra content but of course you know better than a highly established gaming website, don't you?
CVG have taken LAST WEEK'S and transposed them to this week's. Oh, and taken the PSP figures and called them PS3. Whoops.
Here are the actual figures - figure on the LEFT is last week, figure on the RIGHT is this week. Basically, nearly everybody's down:
1 Nintendo DS Lite 201,177 146,073 2 Wii 78,550 65,740 3 PlayStation Portable 32,175 31,216 4 PlayStation 3 23,431 18,727 5 PlayStation 2 16,033 17,540 6 Xbox 360 4,811 6,130 7 Game Boy Advance SP 980 724 8 Game Boy Micro 884 1,050 9 GameCube 383 306
could this be the turning point for Sony, and with play/amazon selling out with pre-orders in europe????
Go to the Play and Amazon sites: They haven't sold out at all. Don't believe the hype.
7 Game Boy Advance SP 980 724 8 Game Boy Micro 884 1,050
How is this even possible, surely most people in the world own a game boy by now, I would have thaught that at least everyone in Japan owned one. On topic now, well done to sega for getting the best selling game of the week, it isn't much of an acheivement considering there isnt much new out at the moment but well done anyway, now lets put the same amount of effort you put into making this game and apply it to sonic, pretty please with a cherry on top.

not possible, simply cuz of the fact that ps3's architecture is damn closer to the nvidia/sega's lindbergh hardware than 360's. version b or c wouldnt make the game 'better' no matter how vague the 'betterment' u imagine it would incorporate.
What do the Japanese know about gaming, they only buy homegrown systems and then only limited genres of games. Hardly unbiased are they.
the japs may not know anything about gaming according to u but they certainly got a whole lot of british chaps high on their wee....or is that wii...ah, who cares, atleast i dont.

It'll be the same if anything else, sega won't let there baby suffer in quality, not when there's such a huge user base for the 360. Much like they've ramped up Virtua tennis.
Anyway, nevermind Virtua Fighter, i want the next installment of Shenmue! Sort it out sega!

until unless vf is out on 360 and i am proven wrong, i will say that this version will look inferior than the arcade perfect version the ps3 has.
ramped up the virtua tennis for 360?? how is that i may ask, the ps3 version will have better texturing and will incorporate full sixaxis controls. the 360 will have online play thats all.
Can't remember where i read it, i'm not overly interested in tennis anyway- damn, memory. I'll flick through my magazine and find it- something about it being upscaled for the super high definition tv's or something. But if it's online- surely that's better anyway? Ah, what do i care- it's tennis.
Sniper I cannot see Sega letting an inferior version be released on a console that has a larger installed base & thus more potential buyers of the game be released.
& even if & its a big if just how much better will it be on PS3 slightly higher res textures yeah thats really worth the extra cash & the 360 version will have a more balanced gameplay by being a newer revision to an already excellent game your sour grapes are so apparent that 360 will get a slightly better "playing version" than your beloved PS3.
And Virtua tennis on 360 will be full 1080P supported so I do not see any reason why VF will be any different & as for the Sixaxis whoopee I would rather be able to play it online than on my own with a crappy tilt feature.
