Goldeneye 007 is the game every proper N64 fan wants to see running in slick hi-res on the Wii's Virtual Console, but with all the licensing issues, can it ever happen?
Can any of Rare's own franchises appear on the VC? It's the question that we all want to know, so one avid rare fan took the next step by posting on a Q&A page on Rareware's website. And here's Rare's response in full:
"This is where we finally edge into territory that could see Scribes neutron bombed from management level. The only Rare-developed title on Virtual Console right now is the original Donkey Kong Country, and unofficially there's a strong likelihood that its sequels will follow.
"But the Donkey Kong series of games is a Nintendo-owned franchise starring an established Nintendo character, whereas something like Banjo isn't (and even Diddy Kong Racing is less clear-cut), so it's nowhere near as easy to call.
"Especially when you also consider the existence of Xbox Live Arcade. So right now, the best answer we can offer (for either download service) is 'it's possible'. I like your sausage casserole mix, by the way."
Random sausage casserole reference aside, that's the state of play, so we can continue to dream.
Elsewhere on the Q&A page Rare's representative spoke more specifically about Goldeneye, explaining that it's "caught up in a convoluted web of rights", but that this "doesn't mean it won't happen, just that a lot of people with a lot of different perspectives are involved."
Who do we have to kidnap to make it happen, Rare? Just name names.
Hopefully it plays as I remember. I had many a good time playing Golden Eye multiplayer when I was younger. After getting through all the red tape, how about you make it worth all the trouble Ninty and give us an online multiplayer?!
You're better off putting all of your old N64 cartridges in the microwave and making some inspired sculpture to put on display in the Tate Modern (or the Game On exhibition at the very least). That way you can earn yourself some money to then spend on paying to download them on the VC.
How about releasing some kind of usb adaptor for the wii with cartridge ports for nes, snes, gamebody and n64...?
Then i could play my own cart copy of goldeneye, or perfect dark... or whatever.
Its surely technically feasable.
Please somone make it
and nintendo would lose money thru you not paying for them on the VC so i doubt they will
They could make an adaptor that played selected games, which would be the games that would normal not be put on the VC. I dought it would ever happen, mind but there's nothing wrong in wishfull thinking.
What is the point of wasting an excellent game on a piece of s**t console
Put it on the xbox 360 with full online play now thats worth it
Funny. Wern't you a Ninty fan before the XBox came out? If so, then you would not dis the Wii becuase it might get a game that your 'console' will possibly never get.
i WAS ninty fan and was until they s**t on the Ds didnt bother with it and then released a new console using the same concept but have it being s**t and over price
I bought a wii and its a piece of crap
You want zelda get a gamecube for Ł30 on ebay
I want goldeneye on the 360 now wouldnt that be a much better option as it would have full online multiplayer
Not just the exact same game like ninty has done with the rest of the 2 games they ahve the virtual console
Ahh yes. Here come the ravid 360 fanboys to shout untrue facts from the rooftops, with their bad spelling.
Come on man. Even the PS3 fans are keeping quite on this one. They know that GoldenEye will never come to the PS3, and neither will it to the 360. Either that or a pimped out version that gamers will throw out faster than the newest videogame-movie tie in will come.
Oh that would be hilarious. The Wii gets the good, original version which uses the Wii-Mote while the 360 gets the s**tty, "It's all about graphics" version.
Mmmm... An interesting topic about a game from the 'Hall of Fame' degenerates into a 'my console is better than your console' bitching contest - how RARE, to make a pun!
You lot appear to have missed the point. Rare are now owned by Microsoft, so anything that Rare had as it's own intellectual property is now owned by Microsoft. This means that it is very unlikely anything will see the light of day on any non-MS console unless a licensing agreement is made.
Needless to say this will cost money and will probably outweigh the projected revenue.
I own a 360 and was unlucky not to get a wii (still no wii ) but i think that a compromise is in order. Microsoft should let nintendo have golden eye for the ds and microsoft on xbl,or maybe just slap it on both online servies healthy competition is always a good thing
why cant everybody just get along for atleast just one game and stop quibbling for every dollar they can get. how about listening to the consumer for a change. put it on all three consoles. WGAF. these three corps are multi billion dollar corps i hink they can spare the change.
