WoW hits 8.5m subscribers

Blizzard's success story continues, The Burning Crusade unsurprisingly selling rather well
The MMORPG has already touched the hearts of millions worldwide but its campaign for world domination doesn't look like ending anytime soon.

Latest subscriber numbers for World of Warcraft have topped a staggering 8.5 million users. Wow, indeed.

That's almost as crazy as this bloke accused of stealing women's undies from a shop at knifepoint believing he was a female elf after playing an RPG. That's a warning to you all that is...

Accompanying subscriber figures is news that expansion The Burning Crusade has sold approximately 3.5 millions copies total in WoW-powered territories since its launch. TBC sales hit close to 2.4 million units worldwide in its first 24 hours of availability, and it's "now established the new one-month record for PC game sales", says Blizzard.

One thing I have always wondered about these figures, is this 8.5 million current subscribers, or there's been 8.5 million subscribers siince the game's release?

While the first one is a believable figure, the latter is how companies tend to project their figures. Always makes the product seem more popular than it is by going for the long-term.

What surprises me is that TBC has only sold less than that figure . You would have thought it would have been alot more than 2.5 mill if these 8.5 mill are active subscribers

In other news, it is revealed that Blizzard listen to the feedback of approx. 0.0 of these players before making sweeping changes to the character who you've been building up for the past two years.

Seriously, though, from the feedback I've been seeing on the official WoW forums, it looks that they're going to lose a fair chunk of this 8.5 million when Warhammer Online hits. I'm hoping that I'll be one of them.

...or even better, be able to quit these damn MMORPGs altogether...

i lost 2 friends to this game as they allways need there fix. were suppose to be going to germany for oktoberfest but im dont think they have time to book the flights. that would take 5mins of there wow time. to them its more addictive than crack! they will be shoving usb cables from there computer into there arms soon trying to jack up on there much needed mmorpg! i think accounts should only be able to play for 10hours a week. then i coudl get my friends back. or maybe pay per minute? or would that lead into a 100% increase in robbery to feed there habbit? i think ile stick to my more skillfull games that arnt going to make me wonder when im older where 2007 went. i hope they will remember me after they have gone cold turkey!

A large number of players have already quit WoW for betas in future games, LOTRO for example. Blizzard also havent quoted how many of the 8.5 million accounts have been banned due to them being used by Gold Farming organisations.

8.5m accounts, 2.5m TBC sold.....Hmm wonder what happened to the other 6m.
