Nintendo and Sega fans have pondered over the possibilities for years, and now it's finally happened - Mario and Sonic are to co-star in a new game on Wii: Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games.
In development for Wii and DS, you take control of characters from both the Mario and Sonic universes including Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mario, Luigi, Yoshi (yes!) and more.
Officially licensed by the International Olympic Committee, you will compete in environments based on the Beijing 2008 Olympics grounds.
The game is said to make innovative use of the Wii and DS control systems when controlling Mario, Sonic and pals in 100 meter sprints or table tennis rallies.
"For the first time, two of the world's greatest games' characters come together to compete in the world's greatest sporting event and we couldn't be more excited", commented Sega's president and chief operating officer, Hisao Oguchi.
Mario creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, says: "Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of video games.
"In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?"
The game is due for a Christmas 2007 release. Until then, take a look at the title image below and keep 'em peeled for more gameplay details soon.
Great i've always wanted to know who would win a 100m sprint between a hedgehog who can travel faster than the speed of sound and a fat Italian plumber!
Good news. Hopefully this is our fist hint of SONIC IN SMASH BROTHERS BRAWL!!
Why would you care mate? Judging by your other posts you went from first being interested in Wii and absolutely hating the P3 to then selling your Wii because you thought it was crap and buying the PS3. And now suddenly you are madly in love with PS3.
So why the interest in a Wii exclusive game then? Because you can bet the farm that unlike PS3 losing exclusives to X-Box 360, this will remain a Wii exclusive.
I mean, I know opinions can change and everything. And we should all respect each others opinions. But you hating Wii (or at the very least being very disappointed with it, you even stated that you don't consider it a next gen machine yourself) and now suddenly showing interest in this Wii title only begs the question: Maybe you should have held off on selling your Wii until better games were released?
And remember: next gen doesn't necessarily mean prettier pictures. Gameplay is what makes a game great, not visuals.
Hmmm... It's on the Nintendo of Europe main page, so I'd say it's true. If it were going to be an April fools' prank, I would assume it would either go out on Friday, or Sunday, not mid-week. Plus it mentions the Olympic Committee and I doubt Nintendo would be able to mention that without getting a firm kicking up the bottom, unless it was true, of course.
This looks pretty real to me. It's on both Nintendo and Sega's websites, and the fact that they've stuck the Olympic Rings on the pictures suggests they're serious. I doubt Sega and Nintendo would pay the notoriously defensive IOC just for the privilege of a licence for a game that dosn't exist.
As for the game itself, well, we'll have to see. I've got high hopes though.
To be honest the game will prob suck however i cant wait for Mario And Sonic platformer for DS. Sure to be in pipeline if this cross over is succesful. Might just buy a ds if it does happen
Thaxus and gbenlcfc, yes lads I do still hate the Wii (but never sold it by the way). But if you will remember WHY I hate the Wii, its because the controller doesn't work... For Smash Brothers, you don't use the Wii remote, you use a Gamecube pad. It is the one Wii game I am looking forward to, because you don't use the Wiimote to play it. Also I am well aware it wont go to any other platforms. Its a Nintendo franchise filled with Nintendo characters.
And Thaxus, just to tell you my console preferences, not that it really matters... Xbox 360 is still the king in my eyes, but the PS3 has surprised me as a very capable console... Motorstorm and Resistance are very enjoyable games, the online offerings even at this early stage are great, and there's LittleBigPlanet on the way. Yes I was excited about the Wii, couldn't wait to get it, then I did get it and it sucked.

English_Crusader, f**k you.
Ah, okay. Thanks for putting thigs into perspective.
I've only played X-Box 360 a couple of times at a mates house, so I can't comment on that. And I haven't bought a PS3, so I don't know anything about that either. But I do think the controls work. I'll admit that games like Red Steel have been misleading (using pre-programmed sword motions instead of you manipulating your sword in realtime), but that is just lazy programming.
Although the launch lineup was quite disappointing with the exception of Zelda of course, better games have started to emerge. I've been playing Excite Truck a lot, and the controls are very responsive indeed. And I've had one or two runs on SSX: Blur, and they seem to have the controls down as well.
As has been stated numerous times: it's all about how the developers implement the controls and how innovative they apply them to their games on the Wii. Lazy programming will only result in disgruntled fans.
I do hope you will still try a few games on Wii and maybe change your mind again.
