Speaking about the recently unveiled Nintendo-Sega collaboration, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, Jeffery said that we won't see another Sonic title on a next-gen platform for quite a while.
"We are actually undergoing a fairly considerable refresh of Sonic as an intellectual property, as a character," he told Newsweek.
"Sonic on the Wii is probably the first product that's come to market that reflects that. We're not going to be bringing another game out on the other platforms for quite some time, because we feel that it is time to reinvent Sonic, to make Sonic contemporary again. At the same time, even the recent 360 and PlayStation 3 games have sold extremely well."

More 3D sonic would be fine if they just sorted out all the bugs. Sonic's 360 game was not all bad it was a nice game let down by crap camara and some other things. The story was as good as any other 3D sonic, and it did look nice. It was a little to fast in places though, some stages were made harder, because you had little or no time to react to something that poped up right in front of you.
Looking at a link (in the retro gaming forum, I think) Sonic Extreme (never released for the Saturn) and the Super Paper Mario preview makes me think a Sonic along those lines would be good.
One that in most levels make it so that you cannot fall to your doom, the targeting attack from the original Sonic Adventure is intact and it's all about speed... nothing else!
About time is all i can say! they shoudl have done that before releasing Secret Rings it was trulley awful.
JUST MAKE SONIC GAMES LIKE THE NEW SUPER MARIO BROS ON THE DS 3D BUT YET 2D!
I think you hit the nail on the head. After 15 years Sonic 1 & 2 are still great fun with top notch playability. Sonic plays best as a 2D game, because you get to move the character fast and the gameplay is not on-rails, its more free!
A 2D update could use the latest technology to give it a 3desque look (but keep 2d) special effects, depth, different moving backgrounds etc.
I think a 3D sonic game would work if you could only play as sonic. The fact that all the 3d games bar secret rings have extra characters mean that they don't focus on Sonic. I still play Sonic Adventure but only for the sonic levels the rest of the game is fairly crap. I reckon a 3d or even a 2.5d Sonic Rush style game for 360 and PS3 (and Wii if rings doesn't get a direct sequel)could work really well.
Yes a 2D/3D sonic would be great, without these dumb storylines as well, Sonic games don't need epic storylines, no one cares about princess whatever just get 'eggman' to kidnap some baby animals again.
They dont need to reinvent sonic, they just need to return to it's roots, i.e make it 2d again with fancy 3d graphics, none of this 3d rubbish with a camera that you could handle in sonic adventure but after 8 years and its still the same dodgy camera, it's time to go and make a proper sonic game, i.e just sonic, no one esle please.
Sonic on the Wii was actually a pretty good game and a grand step in the right direction for our old friend, especially after the s**te that was Sonic Heroes and Sonic next-gen and all the other crap they made. If you couldn't see that then I don't think any Sonic game will satisfy you unless they make something that's simply not Sonic. Perhaps you grew out of it, so simply move on rather than expect to like something you just can't like any more. Roll on Sonic Wii 2 with a bigger budget and longer development process is what I'll say
