Sega puts Dreamcast to bed for good

Repair service aborted, GD-ROM production ceased
Sega's Dreamcast repair service, which has continued to operate despite production of the console having been halted in 2001, will cease from September 28, hammering the final nail into Dreamcast's coffin.

This news comes after production of the GD-ROM, Sega's proprietary discs used for Dreamcast, having been aborted in February. This puts an end to the few Japanese releases which, oddly, still snuck out from time to time, Trigger Heart Exelica and Karous being two released this year.

This could also mean the end for Sega's Dreamcast-based Naomi arcade machines, which also use the GD-ROM format, although it is suggested that developers may be able to continue using ROM boards as an alternative on the machine.

This also marks a complete end to Sega's involvement in the hardware market. We're wiping a tear from our eye...

Great goonygoogoo!!! I thought the DC had gone the way of the dodo yeeeeaaaarrs ago!

I can remember the scene, big PS2 bastards standing over the remains of the poor helpless cute li'll DC.

Atari....Sega......Commadore.....ahh how the mighty have fallen. See it can happen to the biggest boys on the block. Yes i'm looking at you M$, EA and Sony.
richm74 on 2 Apr '07
shame, played one once for a few hours before the PS2 came out and im hindsight the games looked much better( i have fond memories of seeing soul caliber on a 50 inch screen in game Smile ), the usual sony hype generation killed it unfortunately

I've still got my Dreamcast in a cupboard upstairs...

Never used it though. Don't think I ever took it out of the box. Was it good then?

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.

Damn it! My 2nd Dreamcast has just gone the way of the first and died on me. It's now turning off at random, and thats no way to play Streetfighter 3 or Rez. I'm hoping this won't raise the second hand price any cos i need a new one now.

Can i assume it's the soft reset problem? If so, i know a fix if you're interested...

'hammering the final nail into Dreamcast's coffin.'

I'll say it again- consoles don't die. There will be many people with working Dreamcasts for many, many years to come and the franchises that started off on the Dreamcast can and do still continue.
