PS2 sequel God of War II features a hidden HD mode, it's emerged.
Series fans have discovered two puzzles on God of War website IslandofRhodes.org that, once solved, lead to details on how to get God of War II running in 480p.
Our browser appears not to like the site as the initial puzzle won't play ball, but reportedly after you hit 'proceed' on the main site page you're taken to another page with Greek letters hidden in a picture. Spell out 'Kratos' by clicking on the letters and you're taken to the second puzzle - a slide puzzle.
Solve that, and you get the HD info. In order to activate the mode, you need to hold down L1, L2, L3 (L3 being a click down of the left analog stick), Square and Circle during game boot. If performed correctly, the "SCEA Presents" text that normally appears in white should look purple. You then need to select 480p output from the game's options menu (a tip o' the cap to Shacknews for those details).
On top of that, there's a page beyond the HD detail splurge which features a countdown timer slowly spelling a God of War game title. God of War for PSP? God of War for PS3? God of War III for PS2? We can but wait and see.
Just thought i would post that 480p isn't HD it's still standard res be it slightly better due to it running in Progressive rather than interlased HD Resoultions only start at 720p which GOd of war II doesn't do, So CVG you might want to change your title because i bet a lot of people are going to think the 720p option that was mistakenly reported by IGN is in the game when it isn't.
Yes as said above this is technically an EDTV mode (Enhanced Definition) rather than HD, as it only adds progressive scan but doesn't bring the resolution up.
Still, 480p does provide a somewhat noticeable difference in the vibrancy of colours and a slight increase in sharpness, at least from what I saw way back when I switched my Gamecube's regular cables to component cables. It could just as easily have been the better quality cable though, so I can't conclusively say there will be much of a difference.
Any word on whether this setting will be saved once activated, or will we have to go through the initial code-entering and menu-navigating every time we boot up the game?
geez, the usa version just has it in the options menu.
why is the 480p option often taken out for us europeans (ratchet and clank 2 and 3). or we have to go through these "cheats" to enable it! quite often having to hold x and triangle on boot up(tekken 4 and 5)!
and pal xboxs dont have options to do progressive scan, where as ntsc ones have the option of 480p on almost all games, and up to 1080i on burnout! and 720p on soul calibur 2.

i dont get it.....
This is for the US version. And if anybody had actually looked a little more into it or, god forbid, actually gone through the site and games as intended before bitching and moaning they would have read the explanation as to why it isn't a standard menu option. http://cache.kotaku.com/assets/resources/2007/04/gowhdinstructions.jpg

Same on the Gamecube, Pal games had the 480p mode removed whereas the US versions by the majority had the option.

I guess it was probably due to our PAL tv connections. i.e. most UK tvs (until now) only had scart as their best connection available. And you cannot get progressive signal from scart. So I assume that the developers thought it was pointless providing the option.
What is the point in having a hidden Progressive Scan mode? Didn't the first game just have the option in the menu
If, like noone else on here seems to have done, you would have read the explaination which is here, you would see the point and reason it isn't in the menu.
