No more Oblivion expansions, says Bethesda

Developer switches focus to Fallout 3
Shivering Isles could be the first and last full expansion Bethesda releases for Oblivion. The developer has said that Shivering Isles is "the only expansion we have planned".

Speaking to Next-Gen.biz, Bethesda executive producer has explained that now Shivering Isles is out the door, full focus has switched to Fallout 3.

"We have pretty much everybody on Fallout 3 right now", Howard said. "It started off kind of small and then we add people to it and now the expansion's done, all those people have come on to Fallout 3".

"That's the thing we want to focus on right now, so I think I'd be surprised if we do another expansion", he added.

When asked about the possibility to Bethesda farming out development of future Oblivion expansions to other studios, Howard answered that the studio is "really getting into the stuff we're doing with Elder Scrolls and Fallout and I guess we're shy about having someone else start making content."

Look out for CVG's review of the Xbox 360 version of Shivering Isles later today.

Dandoc the game was very good, but like you I sold it, and I wont be getting it again for the expansion (until the price drops anyway)...

Fallout 3 with Bethesda behind it could be the king of RPGs...I hope they build some sort of co-op into it though (not MMO) - i think this is a really overlooked feature and RPGs would be a great genre to explore it.

The problem with Oblivion is that Bethesda tried to make it appeal to both PC owners and 360 owners (the former generally preferring story-driven RPGs, and the latter more interested in action RPGs), and as a result ended up with a game that alienated large segments of both audiences.

Fortunately, Fallout 3 is PC-only.

This is good news, but late news. I would have thought development focus had already predominantly shifted towards Fallout 3...
Better late than never, but they've been sitting on the licence now for ages!!

I'll just install Fallout 2 when I get home and play it for the next... however long until Fallout 3.

When i played oblivion initially I struggled to get into it. I left it for 2-3 months played it again and have been totally hooked. Now i just wait for the patch so i can continue on shivering isles without the danger of losing objects.
