Activision confirms Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Sequel to be first revealed in video at the weekend, CVG learns
Activision has confirmed Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare with CVG this afternoon, saying that a first video from the sequel will be shown in the US at the weekend.

CoD 4 is being developed by Infinity Ward (responsible for the original Call of Duty game on PC and Call of Duty 2), and the video will show during the NFL draft on ESPN over the pond at 1pm EDT/10am PDT.

We're expecting to have the video shortly after its airing on ESPN.

Activision isn't spilling any details on Modern Warfare, but rumour of the sequel hitting back in March 2006 suggested it deals with tackling terrorists around the globe in an attempt to thwart plans that involve unleashing an arsenal of chemical weapons.

Players, according to the rumour, will operate as part of the S.A.S., US Marines and the US Army, with the action occurring in such locations as the Middle-East, the streets of Eastern Europe, aboard sea vessels in the North Atlantic and London.

Lending credence to this info is the fact that it was accompanied at the time by rumoured details on Call of Duty 3, which turned out to be pretty much spot on.

All will be revealed soon...

NO....COD is a world war game, not that modern rubbish about chemical weapons, please dont let them destroy what was a perfect franchise.
DAEDALUS79 on 25 Apr '07
This is going to be s**t. I can tell these things.

If you mean Call of Duty 3 regardless of the system, Infinity Ward had little input in that one.

I'm none too keen on the modern warfare aspect of it though but I suppose the whole WWII thing is getting a bit overdone by now.

I don't want Modern Combat I want World War 2. What a disappointment. Crying or Very sadCrying or Very sadCrying or Very sad
crashlock on 25 Apr '07
Why move from WW2, that's what the series is about? I doubt I'll bother with this. Very disappointed, they have destroyed the franchise.
GPasXBL on 25 Apr '07
Despite CoD2 being complete crap, this will still no doubt sell bucketloads.

I dont mind the modern theme, its good to have a change, but if IW are involved I am not convinced it will be up to scratch after CoD2 being such a let down.

I think people are getting bored with the whole WW2 time frame and maybe now it is time to move on. I can't judge this game yet but have faith that IW will do a great job
English_Crusader on 25 Apr '07
It's good to see developers move away from the typical WW2 time frame, but moving to modern day might take some of the realism away. At least in world war 2 games i can actually shoot Nazis based on a real organisation but with this game who are we going to fight? Generic terrorists, fictional middle eastern guerrilla groups?
I personally would love to see some more Vietnam, Korean war games or conflicts during the cold war.

It's all very well saying they're doing something different, but they are doing something that is already been done to perfection in the form or rainbow six: vegas, why not move away from shooters in general and do something dare I say ORIGINAL!
sonicfury on 25 Apr '07
i think this is a great idea, if you want ww2 then play COD3, its by far the best ww2 game out!...we dont need another, which is why i lost interest in the medal of honor series. the only other modern warfare game out is battlefield and ghost recon(even doh it has future appeal to it)..the current battlefield game sucks, and G.R.A.W. 2 dosnt excite like the first one. so what other modern shooter is there that is good enough to mention off the top of your head? Activision has proven they can make GREAT shooters online and off. so personally i bieleave this is ganna rock, and hopefully will have splitscreen story co-op, and maintian the great online gameplay(online splitscreen, and being able to change gametype while not having to close server) that COD 3 has. who knows this could be the next battlefield, just one with a more serious tone...I cant wait! Very Happy

Yawn!

Modern warfare was done with a fine mod for the original CoD. Also, as the game is being developed for all platforms, we're bound to get dumbed down weapon controls and skill (like CoD2 where you couldn't miss with the MP44, ppsh or a sniper rifle).

As for the gameplay, they'd better having some changes both for single player and multiplayer. I don't think I can face another FPS ever again...
Aircool_212 on 26 Apr '07
yea or WW1 in the trenches with them old guns would be good.

And what gun would that be? German and her allies used the Mauser 1998 battle rifle ( with is a long verison of the K98.

British used SMILE rifle which is the Long verison of the Enfield.

US force used the Springfield 1903.

The only differents in WWI and WWII weapons was there no SMG or semi-auto (Grande, M-1, G43, SVT-40).

I myself wished IW would have stay with the WWII storyline, maybe in the Pacific, Far East, and Italy.
But Modern warfare it is so hopfully it just done well.

Whether space, modern, ww2, most makers stick to a formula of spawn, run, activate trigger, then cinimatic.

Why not give me the option and ultimately, responsibility, of saying "house is clear" in a ww2 game, when a guy who has never set foot in the house is telling me to move on! Or, in a space fps, a chance to scan the rooms for life, or send in a drone to check. It is these simple differing aspects that cement you in the time period, and can camoflage or excite these basic points of advancement through the game.

Another nail in the COD franchise cofin.

Roll on MOHA.

I mean after the COD2 rubbish who is going to waste there money on COD4 when you already have the BF series
pablouk on 26 Apr '07
HOLY s**t!!!! there really is going to be a call of duty 4!!!! thats awsome....it sounds like it will be good...but will it be as good as the world war 2 call of duty series??? i hope so!!!
soldier1991 on 26 Apr '07
BRUTALGAMER has a point, world war one is rarely touched by games. This is mainly because running across no-mansland then getting shot would be pretty boring but some interesting things did happen in 1918. The first machine guns were invented and germany kicked some ass.
And old tanks rock
johnnyrocket on 27 Apr '07
How about playing as the axis forces, Nazis, Austrians, Japanese or Turkish for once? I assume that they did win some territory before defeat. Even though we won't be able to understand one thing they speak...
