Oblivion Review

Review: The best PS3 game to date
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is without doubt one of the best action-adventure RPGs ever created. But you'd only know that if you've played the PC and Xbox 360 versions, or had your mates telling you as much. Oblivion finally rolls out on PS3 this Friday (April 27) and the question on everyone's lips? Is it any better than what 360 gamers have been playing since March last year?

Slapped on the box is a sticker from Official PlayStation Magazine UK, which states Oblivion is "The best PS3 game yet!" While there might be a few heads in hands over at Sony at the thought of a year-old 360 game being the best game on PS3, the testimonial is absolutely right. But only if you've never played Oblivion.

For the uninitiated, Oblivion is a massive free-form action-RPG that allows you to explore the huge game world in any way you see fit. There's a main quest mode that runs through the game but you can dip in and out of it any time you want. You can ignore it completely and choose to roam the vast land stumbling across towns, villages, camps, caverns all brimming with NPCs that have unique stories and quests to give you. Or you can cane the main quest and carry on playing as you explore the land. The way the game's been created gives you total freedom to play it your way.

For details on how the story pans out and what to expect from the gameplay, allow us to direct you to the Xbox 360 review of the game as the PS3 version is essentially the same.

So does it look better than the Xbox 360 version? We'd say yes, but there's very little in it. The fact that the textures still load in as you walk closer to objects grates more than it did on 360 and there's still that bit of slow down as the game loads in a new area too.

It kinds of makes all those raging internet arguments about how my console is more powerful than yours a bit redundant in this early stage of their lifecycles. Fact is both Xbox 360 and PS3 equally struggle to cope with the incredible amount of detail Bethesda has managed to pack in to the world of Oblivion. It has to be said though that these minor issues don't get in the way of what is essentially a great game.

Oblivion on PS3 has also been expanded over the boxed version of the game for Xbox 360 and PC. Bethesda has included the Knights of the Nine expansion pack, which is basically a compilation of all the downloadable content that was released via Xbox Live following its release.

Included in this extra content package is the Horse Armor, The Orrery, Wizard's Tower, Vile Lair, Thieves Den, Mehrunes' Razor, and Spell Tomes. Some of the new content and items are aimed at particular classes of character. You won't get to use everything unless you play through the game a zillion times, each time choosing a different character class.

You also get to establish your very own order of knights in the form of the Knights of the Nine quest. This alone will add several hours to what's already a 100+ hour game.

Unfortunately though it's not the ultimate Oblivion package it could have been. The recently released official expansion, Shivering Isles, failed to make the cut (we reported in January though that Bethesda will released Shivering Isles later this year). Expect to pay up somewhere in the region of £20 if it ever does materialise on PS3.

Fans of Oblivion on Xbox 360 or PC need not bother. The PS3 version is exactly the same, it's just been tweaked a little for Sony's new system.

This is for gamers who have PlayStation tattooed on their foreheads and wouldn't dare look 360 in the face. It's the best PlayStation 3 to be released so far, but only if you've never touched another version.

Now, what ever happened to that PSP version...?

Verdict
Oblivion on PS3 is every bit as incredible as other versions. If you own a PS3 and haven't played it, do yourself a favour.

A half way decent PC eats Oblivion for breakfast Twisted Evil

A half way decent PC has more than 256mb system RAM and 256mb video RAM which is the limitting factor with this game on the PS3.

i have it on good authority that mentioning of it looking better than the 260 version is complete ass. mainly becuase one of teh dudes that worked on the conversion, used the same art files that were used in the 360 version.

and people suggesting that it looks better on the PS3 is quite laughable as its the same.

Doesn't really stop it being a year old 360 game though does it?

Oh... and english crusader- never, EVER make comments on people being fanboys... I've never read such Sony obsessed posts than the ones typed in by your good self -anywhere. In my life.

i actually played the PC version as soon as it was released. i'm not a fanboy of any kind as ive got allsorts of consoles aswell as my pc. what i DO like is playing good games, what i don't like is waste of time consoles that SOMEHOW people think are sooo awesome, when there's f**k all good to play on them. seriously.. what IS the point in getting a PS3 at the moment? there's NOTHING to justify paying through the nose for something that doesnt do anything or offer anythign new exciting or original not just now, but in the next year.

i have a 360, this woudlnt in any way stop me from appreciating or wanting a PS3 IF there was anything decent coming out. what is there to look forward to that i cant get on my pc or 360? unreal3? GTA4(which im not particularly looking forward to YET as it'll be more of the same dogs**t as the last 3) wait, they're also on the 360. there's the chance that FF will be PS3 only, but then stupider things have happened. i honestly dont see anything redeeming about what's going to be available. and THIS is what frustrates me most, as a gamer on multiple fronts, there's NO justification.

hey im no fanboy! whats the point of that? if i was i would have not paid for a wii! I just think PS3 is the best for me and will have the most games that suit me
English_Crusader on 27 Apr '07
All this b******s about it was on here first etc is pointless. If you don't have a PC up to playing Oblivion (which would cost more than a PS3), or a 360 but you do own a PS3, Oblivion is a stonking game and you should add it to you (probably quite small) PS3 collection.

Because loading is quicker and it looks a little sharper I may have traded in my 360 version if this included Shivering Isles (as that will cost me Ł20 on live), but it doesn't...so I won't.

Just been playing Oblivion on PS3. Damn Play.com is good! Really impressed with it. Graphics are sharp. Gameplay is great. Looking forward to many hours spent playing! Well worth the wait. Recommend it!
daijohn on 27 Apr '07
I suppose its not really that good a recomendation for the PS3 that its 'best game so far' is one that was out on its main competitor over a year ago, that said if you don't have it already then its a great game to add to your collection.

I recently picked it up for the PC for Ł12 (bargin of the year contendor if you ask me) since I have a shiny new PC that eats it alive Smile

I have Oblivion on the Xbox 360, PC and PS3 and although the PC version is the best of the lot in terms of graphics and loading times (plus the bonus of being completely moddable!), the PS3 version definitely feels more polished than the 360 one.

For starters, the most noticeable difference, and one CVG saw fit not to mention in their review, are the quicker loading times, at least twice as fast as the 360 version and pretty much on a par with the PC version. This makes the waiting between areas far less annoying so this gets a big thumbs up from me. Secondly, there's far less stutter in the countryside sections along with fewer "Loading area..." messages (why were they there in the first place?) and a slightly longer draw distance with less noticeable popup. The PS3 version also looks slightly sharper in terms of textures and the bump-mapping is more pronounced. There's a few more jaggies here and there but nothing major and the gorgeous HDR lighting has survived intact.

Otherwise in all other respects, it's identical to the previous versions and still a bloody amazing game a year on (the best game ever made in my opinion) and an absolute must-have for PS3-only owners.

sure does i'm not a fanboy of anything just games but the 8 cells on the ps3 only work to 50% max that equals x-box's 4. No one will ever be able to get that extra bit out of the ps3 cell its not a games processor full stop.
And anyone remeber when Sony stated that no one will ever get 100% out of the ps3 EH eh?
Ps3 is screwed you can make a Wii game a DS game and a 360 game for the price of 1 ps3 game.
davelk on 28 Apr '07
can't they make the 360 oblivion like the ps3 one, just by a patch?
FOX619 on 28 Apr '07
ever since the update for the 360 just before the isles expansion pack came out i have noticed that the loading times while roaming across the countryside isnt as bad now

oblivion is a great game, but i dont think the few changes in loading times etc would make me buy the game again

Yup, the article sums things up perfectly.
there might be a few heads in hands over at Sony at the thought of a year-old 360 game being the best game on PS3

and

While Oblivion might still be a great game, the PS3 is in no way cashing in on the superior technology that it's supposed to have, nor is it proving that it's worth the investment. Given a year of extra development I'm pretty sure the game would look as good or better and load just as fast on the Xbo360 as the PS3.

A year old game available on two other formats is the best game on the PS3. I don't really see how Sony could console themselves with this fact or how anyone can really put a completely positive spin on this. This is just bad.

Oblivion is actually pretty boring, restrictive, generic and not even a proper RPG, but Bethesda pays well as is evident by the hype generated. I'm sure a year from now we'll be seeing it in some "most overrated titles" list, similar to the reaction Deus Ex 2 had with the initial great scores on anything but independent websites/reviewers and the later admissions of it being a let down even by its creator. Shame on you C&VG and every place which rated Oblivion high as an RPG title. Clueless morons or paid hype masters alike. Here's one of the few honest Oblivion reviews done in an interesting way showing what the developers promised via their quotes and what the game actually offers via the reviewer's experience. Someone has bought the same game for PC, Xbox360 AND PS3??? What the f*ck?!!

Can't think of a good reason to spend the same money 3 times.
