It's no great surprise perhaps considering the huge success of WoW, but new information coming to light indicates that Blizzard has further plans afoot in the MMORPG space.
A job listing posted in the Employment section of the developer's website reveals that it's looking to recruit a lead engine programmer who will "lead an engine-programming team focused on next-generation massively multiplayer online games."
The job listing doesn't spill any further beans and neither, unsurprisingly, is Blizzard. The developer told GameDaily it's not ready to reveal any new projects at this time, although a representative added, "I can say that we have multiple unannounced projects in development and are exploring various options for the future of our franchises."
While the phrase "next-generation" could be taken to mean the new console generation, it could equally be taken literally to mean the next generation of MMORPGs. Whether the job listing is connected to Blizzard's new product announcement it's making next month, we'll just have to wait and see.
After the disaster of Starcraft: Ghost on the consoles, can't this latest MMO being a console only jaunt. Also can't see this being the mooted announcement next month either, that'll probably be Starcraft 2.
When we do learn of what this new MMO is, World of Starcraft is a good shout, considering the massive popularity of that franchise in the Eastern market. Could also be much rumoured Diablo 3 going online, maybe?
Nah my moneys on it being to create a new WOW game engine to make the most of DirectX 10 and Vista which from the demo's i've seen so far are already looking pretty s**t hot!
Looks like the PS4 & Xbox 720 R&D teams are going to have to pull their fingers out a lot quicker than the stated 10 year lifecycle of this gen. if they want to keep up!!
