StarCraft MMO blasts into orbit!

Blizzard's new sci-fi MMO is set to rock the world later this month, sources tell CVG
The long-rumoured new instalment of Blizzard's massive StarCraft series is set to be unveiled later this month - and it's another massively-multiplayer online game in the style of World of Warcraft, CVG learns.

Well placed US sources have revealed to us that the StarCraft MMO will be unveiled at an upcoming Blizzard event on May 19 in South Korea - the epicentre of the sci-fi RTS series' rabid fandom.

The unveiling of the new instalment has previously been rumoured for the South Korea event, though we now know that the title is in fact an online spin-off and not a new RTS game as previously assumed.

Of course this is massive news for both Vivendi and the MMO world; Blizzard's other online offering World of Warcraft has topped 6 million subscribers and is arguably the biggest game around today.

The question is, is there room for both World of Warcraft and a StarCraft MMO? The later will have to be a very different type of online game to convince gamers to subscribe to both of Blizzard's pair.

We will of course let you know as soon as soon as Blizzard officially confirms the game on May 19.

Indeed. I hope it's a more progressive MMO game.

What's this about "6 million" users/players for WOW...at the last count it was 8 million and climbing!! Personally I've never been a fan of Starcraft but with Blizzards MMO pedigree it may well be worth taking a peek!!
Tonyb on 5 May '07
great, just f'in great... blizzard is ruining another one of their great franchises for me. not only is there no Warcraft IV to look forward to, but now there won't be a Sarcraft II. are they gonna make a Diablo MMO next and screw me over from ever playing Diablo III? in my book blizzard was always just a slow developer, and that was my only gripe. now they're just money hungry and slowly giving everything the MMO treatment. Sad
MusashiX2 on 5 May '07
lol!!! blizard sucks!!lineage rulzzz
Stilzhein on 5 May '07
sure the idea is exciting and intriguing but blizzard already has wow dominating the mmorpg genre. it's hard to imagine two blizzard games fighting for the top spot.
maybe that's not good for the genre, we don't know.

besides, starcraft has a strong following already. its fan base may not like it. of course, every fan has been following the story and all.. so we don't know. but on top of our heads, we believe blizzard should have left starctaft to rts and wow to mmo.

and about the event, its called blizzard world invitational..

your excellent spelling makes this article seem oh so credible!
torondor on 5 May '07
Er, yea, Warcraft was famous for the RTS parts as well but that didn't stop them from making WoW. As for this game having to be different, actually, I bet it can be a direct replica of WoW in the Starfact setting and do just as well. Such is the sad state of the industry.

Thankfully this doesn't mean we won't be seeing either series making a return as a RTS. I'm sure Blizzard wants to eventually exploit that market share as well, and they would be dumb not to with their past success.
Al3x on 5 May '07
Look quite frankly I don't care about a new Starcraft MMO game because the universe is a poor rip-off of Warhammer 40,000 and I'd argue with anyone who says different. What everyone knows is that a RTS is what the fans want. In protest at Blizzard they should all buy Dawn Of War 2 when it arrives as this will be the new king of Sci-Fi RTS. The predecessor and expansions are rather quite excellent and I would recommend them to....now p**s off what u on about u swines
warpedAi on 6 May '07
Duh, whoever said it's about originality of the setting? It's about the quality of blizzard's products obviously. I don't think if dawn of war 2 manages to be succesful (it'll never reach starcraft btw) they'll think "o s**t that's a hit to us" since they aren't competing with it in any way, until they decide to. And you won't tell them when it's time to do that so go cry in your corner over not getting a RTS, lol. If you really didn't care about this game you didn't have to post here at all, you obviously care in some way if you have such a fit over it. Like I said, getting a Starcraft MMO means jack about the series' RTS aspect, it'll come just as fast or as slow as it would even without a MMO.
Al3x on 6 May '07
I hope it turns out more like Planetside then wow. Dont really think that starcraft would work unless it was Firstperson.
lyrael on 6 May '07

Oi just calm the hell down you maniac. My real agenda is as a fan of Dawn of War and the Warhammer creative license, I really do not care about a Starcraft MMOrpg. Now what you must admit is that Blizzard have turned into a bit of a cash cow of late - I want a new RTS or RPG not yet another bloody hugely played OG. You wonder who plays them all for pete's sake.

So, we come to it at last...another blizzard mmo.

So WoW it has 8 million odd people with accounts, but only around 3million ACTIVE subscribers AFAIK. i tried that, i personally found it boring, thats my opinion, you can have yours thats fine, each to their own. but if this one is just WoW with Starcraft slapped over the top, then im sure people will play it, especially in korea where they like grinding (RFO anyone?) but im hoping they'll do something good with it, if not, that blizzard, i am dissapointed with you. your RTS games were great, your mmo so far...not so much.

Warhammer 40k and starcraft are very different and very similar, its like comparing marvel and DC comics, two similar universes with very different goals. compare them if you want, but they are very different.

oh and sorry if my spelling and grammar arent up to your standards, this is the internet...its not that important.
Shadow_Fury on 6 May '07
If this is true that is outstanding. I have long loved the starcraft universe and would love to see another game come into the fold. I would like to have it be a RTS in some way/shape or form but whatever, either or. I cant believe people miss diablo and you say wow is boring? OMG lets run the exact same 4 dugeons for the entire game.. god i dont miss that a bit. And as for warhammer, played them and the expansions, i was very unimpressed. Units are unballanced, nothing in the game seems very creative at all, no story what so ever. As RTS games go, i'd put it at the bottom of the pile, I dont know how Warhammer 2 will do or whatever the title for it is called but unless they make some serious changes, it would not be worth the download time much less the money.

Oh and if your not interested in this game why are you posting here? Don't have anything better to do?
Holyjeebus on 6 May '07
Excellent! Make a Starcraft MMO, drop World of Warcraft like a ton of bricks and focus on making Warcraft IV!

Seriously, I've love to see Blizzard return to the RTS market - Warcraft III is my all time favourite RTS game, and Frozen Throne added so much to it's gameplay it was mind boggling. It'd be a shame if all their franchises went MMO, but eh... If you're that upset, go and play the great games they've made in the past again. Smile
Artificial Idiot on 6 May '07
I think Starcraft 2 is much more likely then Starcraft MMO.

WoW is still popular and will be for few more years... it is too soon for another MMO (even if it's different in many ways).

Besides.. Korea is the perfect place to announce a new RTS. Starcraft matches are broadcast on TV.. the pro players are stars.. so if they want to announce Starcraft 2 (or another RTS) it would make sense to do it there.
Starcraft is now very old.. and if Blizzard wants to stay the nr. 1 in RTS pro gaming they will need to make a replacement for it.
ahac on 6 May '07
Not sure how this is going to end up (assuming that the announcement is indeed World of Starcraft). I would be very disappointed if it just ended up as World of Warcraft with a Starcraft skin. However, given the space setting I can imagine much more scope for a something closer to a Eve/Planetside hybrid than World of Warcraft.
tmulford on 6 May '07
1)Blizzard already said that they don't want to or intend to support two MMORPG at the same time and that wow will be alive for atleast 10 more years where they will release one expansion per year.

2) Blizzard has already said no to these rumours.
quote:
"Blizzard also took pains to emphasize it has not become Vivendi's specialty MMOG developer. "We do not currently have any MMO development plans beyond the upcoming expansion for World of Warcraft, and furthermore, we don't have any intentions to focus on only one genre or platform with our future games," a rep told GameSpot. Indeed, Blizzard's jobs page has listings for both console and PC positions, although none mention any specific new titles by name"

Salle79 on 7 May '07
The well-placed US source isn't necessarily one that knows what they're talking about.

If it's a well-place sourced outside Blizzard, maybe they just assumed Blizzard's next game would be like WoW because that's all they are familiar with.

For a company that is so hardcore on its integrity, I don't think Blizzard would be dumb enough to try two MMOs and split its famous fan base. It doesn't make much business sense.

If it's an offshoot of SC, and there's still console programmers at Blizzard, then it's probably just the return of the (indescribably fun) Starcraft: Ghost. Which, with online gaming connections on the consoles, could technically be qualified as an "MMO".

Now that they've had considerable time to port it to newer consoles, and/or even computers, it would make a great ramp-up to a Starcraft 2 announcement at Blizzcon. The timing is there again, and SC:Ghost was just 'postponed indefinitely', not totally canned.

Ghost, ironically, lives again? Smile

They did say before that they were keen to return to console development. But yeah, my thinking on this matches yours. We can only hope we're accurate. Cool

WoW is still popular and will be for few more years... it is too soon for another MMO (even if it's different in many ways).

However, when World of Warcraft starts to become less popular then it'll be too late to start work on a new MMO at that point. The next one needs to be well under way.

The announcement whatever it is I guess we'll find out for sure on the 19th May. The only rumour that is consistent is that it is a Starcraft game and that is still just rumour.
tmulford on 7 May '07
To confirm some of the posts on here. I just spoke with my friend @ Blizzard and while there is an announcement happening on the 19th, he confirmed that "it's no World of Starcraft" =) Thanks god!

So it's the other hot contender then, World of Rock & Roll Racing.

Karis on 8 May '07
You can't speculate after you've got the facts Smile

Sounds to me like it's going to be essentially a re-skinned version of WoW with a futuristic setting. We'll see.

I'd prefer they knocked MMOs on the head for a bit though and worked on something different. Obviously they know where the money is.
Dajmin on 8 May '07
I bought WoW and played it for a month and found it incredibly boring. On the other hand, Starcraft is one of my favorite games so I would be delighted to see a Starcraft 2 on the horizon.
micka on 8 May '07
Just to throw the arguement wide open Blizzard have now said that there aren't working on any future MMOs at the moment aside from WOW expansion packs.

It's in this OXM article on them not making a 360 version of WOW.

ya...warcraft sucks, its about time they made a new starcraft, after warcraft, warcraft II, warcraft II b.net edition, warcraft 3 and then WoW and all us SC fans got is broodwar? wtf blizzard about time, and starcraft rocks, its always been higher quality than warcraft, so this game is gonna be better than WoW, i have all of blizzards rts games and WoW and broodwar is still superior to all warcraft games. and diablo sucks thats all.

No idea whether it's going to be a Starcraft or Diablo-related announcement, and of course I didn't want my friend to violate any NDAs. However, I personally have been waiting a good 7 years for SC2 Razz Given the fact that the news is dropping in Korea suggests an SC game...
compsciguy on 8 May '07
It took roughly 3 years from when WoW was announced to reach the shelves. Assuming they do announce a Starcraft MMO ..(which I figure they will, they'd be dumb not to, WoW's raking in millions of dollars a month) ... that would place the Starcraft MMO at roughly 2010, which is definately enough time to let WoW die off naturally to the point where the Starcraft MMO wont be poaching a huge number of WoW players.

Seems like good business.
DeeDeeDee on 9 May '07
I personnally think that WoW has at least another 4 to 5 years on it, possibly longer. Expansion packs will keep it longevity. Just look at Everquest or Camelot for proof, and they've got, what half the subbies that WoW has ever had?

If Blizzard have been strongly insisting that they are not deving a new MMORPG then it's probably about right. They are a company with shareholders and business plans. They do not go round feeding out false info just to turn around and announce that they were lying and that they're gonna release an MMO after all.

I'm gonna go with it being Starcraft 2 announcement. Hell either way i'll be a happy bunny.

Are you kidding me?! If I had to go back to playing Diablo now that I've gotten into WoW I'd shoot myself. How can you say Diablo is better? That would be like participating in never before tried underwater cave dive and finding a billion dollars in lost spanish gold and then saying, "Yeah that was ok, but now I wanna get back to my aboveground pool for some REAL excitement". Seriously, you need to stop going off your meds without doctor approval. Wink

Oh. Damn!

OK then. If it's not Hello Kitty Online (which I think if Blizzard made would be HUGE), it'll be Starcraft.

After all, they're following a strict formula here and people seem to be clamouring for Starcraft.

Plus Blizzard say: it's not Starcraft, meaning (translated from the original Blizzspeak!):

Goddamnit. How did they guess? s**t. Quick. Think Fast... No it's NOTHING to do with Starcraft. We don't even like that license. Go away and don't bother us again with your pointless questions, you plebs...

Or something.

i am well addicted to wow it's grate, however WAR looks like it will gain most of wow player i know most people in my guild are going to buy it and so will i.

i like most people will play it for a mouth if it's good wow account will be stopped and will just play war.

what i have seen of WAR looks very good so far Bliz should be scared it's reliese will be the beginning of the end for WOW.

Blizz so far have created the best MMOG, with the best playability which all other games copy when they created WOW but it's getting old now 2 years long time for a game. where it can be update thats grate but the game engine can never be replaced without massive difficults.

Blizz know wow slowly on it way out and active accounts are only going to decrease from now on unless WAR and LOTR are complete flops. Therefore they know they need a new game with a new Engine some new ideas and with lessions learned and GOS "Galaxy of Starcraft" looks like i will be there man i hope the news is correct it would make alot of sences

I personally think a world of starcraft would be brilliant. I wouldnt mind a starcraft 2 rts, but a wos would be better. and everyone who says blizzard should make more rtss, well theres nothing stopping them continuing warcraft and starcraft on in rts even if they are mmorpgs. It would be more difficult for warcraft because they are more limited to areas, but with sc they could easily have all the characters in the rts leave the mmorpg and have them go to other planets where players couldnt reach while the rts came out, making it more realistic.

i dont think this thing is true with the new expansion of WoW TBC why would Blizard want to releas anothere MMO? they have a lot going on in WoW atm and its population keeps growing and sure not all 8 mil are active but most of them prob pay for there account and thats all that matter to Blizz rly.

If they start working on WoS now, it'll take a couple of years before it can be released. TBC won't affect that.
OneTaoZen on 16 May '07
Just out of curiosity, you all actually think Blizzard would be stupid enough to bring a Starcraft MMO? They'd be cutting into their own subscription base. They have already displayed a very intricate knowledge of marketing in some fashion to have 8 million plus subscribers. Why, if they are as money-hungry as most everyone seems to say, would they threaten their own cash cow? Doesn't make much sense to me. Hardcore fans of Starcraft who want an MMO are going to be let down come the 19th, and from the way it sounds on this board, most all of you will be very pleased.
Rabid on 17 May '07
I still think that a wos would be great, but a starcraft rts would only be as good if they used the same graphics as the orgionals, because thats what made it good in the firstplace. If they made a sc rts with warcraft 3 graphics it would suck badly.

Way to go "confirming" that, using the terms such as "in fact" and writing it with an air of "This is definite". Pull a Dan Rather, did we?

Who needs credibility when you can just post rumors, make up sources, and get attention for your POS website?

And I love how you changed the name of the writer of the article from Andy Robinson to just "CVG Staff" - he was probably too afraid to get e-mails calling him out like the poor journalist he is.
