Nintendo scooped Final Fantasy III remake from Sony
Wednesday 2-May-2007 2:36 PM Square Enix originally eyed PS2 for the remake before Nintendo convinced them to go with the DS version, producer tells CVG
The DS remake of Final Fantasy III is about to launch across Europe this Friday, but it could have been a different story if Nintendo hadn't stepped in and persuaded Square Enix to go with the DS.
The company's original plan was to release the remake on the old, faithful PlayStation 2. But there seems to have been a bit of a last minute bidding war from Nintendo.
Producer Hiromichi Tanaka told CVG, "Originally we were planning to release the game on PlayStation 2 but Nintendo wanted us to release it on this new platform." Would you rather have it on PS2 or do you think it best suits DS? Let us know your thoughts below.
You can read our full interview with Tanaka here, where he discusses the potential of remaking Final Fantasy VII for a current machine and how his team got so much power out of the DS for the remake.
Look out for CVG's Final Fantasy III DS review tomorrow.
Wow. this game was never announced for the Playstation in any way. Nor do you cite any evidence to say it was planned for the PS2 But you spin it into an anti-Sony story!

it wouldnt suit the PS2( PSP yes, but not PS2 ) and im surprised at this story, the reason i say that is the characters are way too simple and cartoony, in sales it would be slaughtered by FF12

Didn't you read the bit where the Producer said "Originally we were planning to release the game on PlayStation 2 but Nintendo wanted us to release it on this new platform."

i would much rather it to be on the PS2... a final fantasy requires a significant amount of time, and the DS just isn't the right machine (as is the PSP)... it's really disappointing if they ditched the PS2 for a DS
Now all they need to do is convince them to do a decent new FF game for the Wii. Online would be great.
Not a remake, not a port, not an update. An actual new game. You hear me, Square Enix? NEW!
Erm, there already is is an actual new Final Fantasy gasme coming to the Wii. Exclusively to the Wii, in fact. It's called Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers.
There ain't been a decent Final Fantasy since Final Fantasy 9. Square have become complacent with their once great franchise. No-one gets as excited now when a new FF is announced and it's a crying shame. Final Fantasy VII stopped the industry moving way back when. We waited for a similar revolution in gaming with the series moving to a 32bit 'next gen console'. Square did not deliver. Since then Final Fantasy has slowly turned into the derivative, stale genre that is Eastern RPG'S. Ok some still like their 'quirky-ness' and Eastern charm but i'm bored of this now lame f*cking record that Japanese RPG developers continue to play. Now they are being dominated in the market by superior and more well crafted European and American RPG'S, Which is largely the case in most genres of games now. The East had their time, now a new age is being forged in the west.
