Counter-Strike is coming to the dedicated UK sports channel, Sky Sports Extra, sources have told CVG.
Valve and Sky have signed a deal to produce a program based around Counter-Strike tournaments. In case you need reminding Counter-Strike is the massively popular online team-based shooter.
As we understand it Sky has purchased the broadcasting rights from Valve Software for Counter-Strike in the UK and the firm intends run regular TV shows around organised competitions for screening on Sky Sports Extra.
No further details were available at time of writing but we'll keep digging.
no doubt will be another reason for sky to try and get subscribers on their premium stuff, this is annoying actually because it may( im only speculating ) mean that Counterstrike matches may not be allowed to be broadcast in the UK and go the way of football matches
I guess that confirms videogaming as an accepted sport then. I wonder if 'athletes' will get banned for performance enhancing red bull. Seriously though, the Daily Mail will HATE this.
Lets hope with all this multichannel digi crap you can flick between the two teams players or camera view. Haven`t got sky, but at least gaming is being shown.
It is public knowledge that the News Corp, who own Sky TV and in the US DirecTV is building the CGS (Championship Gaming Series), which is primarily focussed on the US, but will also come to the UK on Sky Sports. In fact, it will be a global set up with events in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia.
That Valve licensed them has not been officially released, but the fact that CGS (read DirecTV) is going to broadcast Counter Strike Source, everyone knew they already had a deal for the game.
These rumors are as little as 4 months old.
Other games that have been announced for the CGS are FIFA, PGR, DOA.
Be brilliant, should be on at night though. The games frustrating as it is and theyd be loads of people swearing... Maybe just a dedicated sports channel for virtual-games tornys. Theres loads of big time lan matches around the world they could stick them on.
