Internet rumours speculate that the new Wii game, Impossible Mission, will be made available as a download through the Wii Shop emerged. System 3 expects Nintendo to announce a new game download service for Wii "within the next two months".
System 3's Mark Cale told Palgn: Impossible Mission would be one of the first titles we're going to be launching on Wii, [that will] be available from retailers, and to download as well, and that's where we're going to be exploring what Nintendo can actually do in terms of downloadable content, and see if it can match Xbox Live."
When asked about Impossible Mission appearing on the virtual Console, he said: "I wouldn't say Virtual Console, because they're not actually calling it the Virtual Console, but in the next few months there will be various announcements I'm sure made by Nintendo that will offer users a system that will be similar to that of what Microsoft is offering at present, which is the ability to download content."
Just to clarify, the Virtual Console as a service is dedicated to delivering downloadable retro games, so a new-game download service would likely come under a new name.
He went on to say that Nintendo is has to "set up its various systems", adding that Microsoft are "years ahead" of its rivals.
"It really depends on when Nintendo are rolling out their strategy, which I expect will be within the next two months," he speculated.
If a new-game service is to be announced, the games will need to be small being as the Wii only packs 512MB of internal memory, which is nothing these days. Unless Nintendo improves the Wii's use of the SD Cards (currently, you can store VC games on an SD card but they cannot be played unless they're copied to the Wii's memory, which takes longer than it should).
Looks like there may be some truth in the official Wii Hard drive then,
If they release a USB Hard Drive that replaces your Wii Stand, then thats ok with me, I rekon 60GB minimum and then we can start downloading Game demo's too,
And a firmware update for music and video playback would be very welcome
If they release a USB Hard Drive that replaces your Wii Stand,
now THAT would be very good indeed
Agreed - I was thinking an external HDD would add to the clutter under my TV... but this would be the perfect solution. Let's hope some bright spark at Nintendo has already thought of it
Certainly seems likely that some form of HHD support will be implemented if this new service takes off...

Yes that would be very nice indeed. However, because the Wii stand isn't that big, and considering small hard drives (e.g. Xbox 360's 20GB HDD) costing around Ł69, I reckon that it'll cost a lot of money for a HDD in the size of the Wii stand.
