EA is gearing up for the full unveil of its new Need For Speed multiplatform racer. Gone are the canyon-races of Carbon and in comes a new focus. We've got our hands on the first trailer too!
Need For Speed: Pro Street has got nothing at all to do with FIFA Street. In fact, if you look closely the trailer doesn't even say it's actually called Pro Street, but we know it is because there's a scan of a Polish mag doing the rounds with 'Need For Speed: Pro Street' on the cover.

The trailer doesn't give too much away, as the full reveal is expected to land on May 31; possibly even earlier if people can transcribe the Polish magazine's article. But look closely and you'll see crash damage alongside references to trading paint, which looks to be the big new feature for the series. Could Need For Speed be getting a little more serious and taking on a simulation approach?
The focus of the title remains a mystery but we're banking on it featuring track and street racing. Track racing because the trailer shows a car on a track and street racing because it's called Pro Street. See what we did there?
Need For Speed games usually blitz every gaming system around at the time of release, but from the first footage released, it looks to be taking on a next-gen approach for Xbox 360 and PS3. they're defiantly not GBA graphics...
Check out the movie and check back on May 31 for the full reveal of Need for Speed: Pro Street.
The fifa of racing games has quite a bit to prove, though... it's always been overshadowed by other arcade racers in my mind. A prettier NFS wouldn't be enough to get me to buy into this franchise.
Not with Burnout, Flatout, Forza, PGR, GT, Dirt all coming out and offering so much. NFS is up against it, this gen.
It does seem that recently EA have forgotten that NFS doesn't have to tie-in with a Fast and the Furious movie. Hopefully this will bring it back to it's "roots" more.
Have to admit to buying Underground, UG2, Most Wanted and Carbon though... Can't deny they're fun. Just lose the jeering "fo-shizzle" street attitude fmv's eh?
I agree Mr Vengeance, the latest offerings have been lacklustre.
I've been playing NFS since 3DO and Saturn days. It's been the patchiest franchise in terms of delivery.
I'm glad that Xbox Live lets you download demos. I tried Carbon and once I'd filtered out all the 'street' nonsense I found the gameplay to be lacking. There was no fun, no feeling of weight or speed or skill. The last gem for me was Underground 2.
The trailer for the new game looks very pretty, but so did Carbon's. I'll be waiting for the demo before making a purchase decision.
One thing I'd like to see included as an extra at some point are the original tracks and car types updated for next-gen. Many hours were spent racing, and seeing who could pull off the better crash.
The tape on the damaged part of the car looks like a great detail - hopefully it will be based on actual damage and not just stuck in specific places. It would also be cool if a part flew off if the tape became unstuck.
I'd just love to have one with focus on the cops again, but with a lot more depth than Most Wanted had in that regard.

I'm right there with you!
I've enjoyed all those games, for me Most Wanted was the best of them (even if the Police Chases became a hassle after a while). It had the right mix of cars (brining exotics back into it was a good move), the tuning and styling options covered all the bases without becoming totally anal (a selection of body kits and a selection of spoilers & wheels is fine, choosing individual front/rear bumpers and side skirts from dozens of each available is just too much trouble!)
I'll wait for more details on the game play before making a decision but I'm definitely interested For some reason, the return of daylight is one of the best things! In Carbon, the biggest turn-off was the return to the night only racing, the neons and lights just weren't doing it for me.
