FIFA will thrash PES, says EA

"I'm happy to say that we're comfortably on top in the whole FIFA vs Pro Evolution Soccer battle" says EA marketing man
EA is feeling as confident as ever about the yearly FIFA vs PES battle as FIFA 08 and PES 7 prepare to do battle for another season.

"I'm happy to say that we're comfortably on top in the whole FIFA vs Pro Evolution Soccer battle," marketing manager Dan Holman told UK trade mag, MCV. Our market share has kept on increasing over the past three years, and more and more core gamers are being converted to FIFA all the time."

The bullishness doesn't end there either. "We've sold 1.7 million copies of the last FIFA and Pro Evo is lagging behind on just over a million," continued Holman, adding, "With the new platforms in place, we're confident that we will attract even more football fans to FIFA - both existing gamers and the wider, non-gaming football community."

We expect the new FIFA 08 game to be revealed any time soon. If you want a taste of what's new for the title, check out our recent interview with EA's director of football, Andrew Wilson.

Well EA Fifa is expected to sell more as it's on more consoles.

Can't see me getting any i'm bored with football games now.

Best footie game for me was iss 64

fifa will never be better than pro, they dont understand what makes pro so special, they can have better graphics, commentary and more licensces but never the realism and most importantly the gameplay..
declanhodge on 29 May '07
what do they expect? they have the full licenses! PES is quite obviously the better game by a mile so i presume people are still buying fifa for the real names and stuff? it certainly isnt for the weak gameplay.. konami get all the licenses!
up2nogood316 on 29 May '07
Selling more doesn't make it a better game. EA is trying to copy PES for a few years now, slowly trading fifa gameplay for pes 6 gameplay, but doesn't manage to get it right.
King_Elshout on 29 May '07
Must admit that I keep buying the new update of fifa, believing all the claims that EA seem to make. Every single time I take it back to the shop within a week to trade it in for something else. The last fifa game I really enjoyed was the old isometric one.

If it were'nt for the official teams then fifa would die a death. Pro evo is a much better game and selling over a million is no mean feat. If it had full official teams then it would kick fifas cheeks.
Mark240473 on 29 May '07
I wonder if your defenders will actually defend rather than just stand there until the attacker has already gone Very Happy

I also hope the 360 version this year is not a cut down hack job or it'll be another rent rather than a buy....
cax128 on 29 May '07
Your right it would be interesting to see what happened if EA had the balls to let go of their licensing deal. im a pro evo man myself but my dads stuck with fifa, he just doesnt want to play lancashire (blackburn rovers) vs man red (Man utd). So come EA let pro evo have the proper names and we'll see how strong your fan base really is!
Limerick on 29 May '07
What's with this fad of companies gloating about sales? It's getting worse every year. Far from professional.

As already pointed out, people aren't disappointed by a game until after it's been purchased, and game returns do not affect game publishers, only retailers.

I call for anyone to go into their local EB or GAME and see which franchise has more shelf space and which has more in the bargain bucket.

I hate the way some of these companies fail to accept that post sale activities matter on the quality of their games. Pathetic.
Straws on 29 May '07
Pro Evo kicks FIFA's ass hands down. If you don't like not having the real names, change them or go online to ebay and get them there. Pro Evo has out stripped FIFA since Playstation 1. Pro Evo had a bad first outing on the 360 but I am sure it will be back to its best this year.

I'd gladly have a friday night in with 5 or so mates, couple of beers, some pizza

And a good few games of ProEvo. . .

Fifa? p|ss off.

What that person said about earlier was so true, take away they're licensing and they would make NOTHING!

Well although I agree that PES plays better than FIFA (Miles better in fact) I am thinking twice about getting the next one as currently I can't play PES6 on live due to a rubbish update released by konami!!!!! At least I would be able to play FIFA!!! I wish they would put it back to how it was as I could put up with all the cheats and bugs as long as I could play the thing.
leefear1 on 29 May '07
Well, they could be quite close if Konami don't make improvements over the appauling 360 version, though that's unlikely.

But if Konami don't bother to fix out the series' niggles and the very poor setpiece mechanics, then Fifa does have a good change of getting quite close - those setpiece mechanics have been broken and basic for too long in PES and they really need changing. It's probably an area that Fifa has been better than PES at.

Very smart. Except... FIFA and Pro Evo have comparable prices.

As for the quality of the games, they are both awful (why are we still playing with 8 directions when we have these lovely analogue sticks?) but at least FIFA is trying to make steps forwards with a physics-based engine. Your Pro Evo allegiances might keep you from seeing it, but unless Pro Evo steps up then the future is FIFA.

Both suck though, i'll re-iterate that.
Asaron on 29 May '07
I'll go for whichever doesn't have a billion different button presses to remember. If Sensi was so great with 2 buttons, why do I have to remember lots of different combinations just to pass a ball.

I still prefer Pro Evo though as the game understands football; push an attacker wide and onto their wrong foot and your midfielder will fill the defensive gap you left behind whilst the attacker runs out of options. You can play a whole game of Pro Evo without having to touch the slide tackle button. It understands football!!!
Aircool_212 on 29 May '07
I still regard the PC versions of Pro as the best (although I use XBOX joypads with it!) and they are the easiest to modify. It's only hours after the game is released and someone has updated all the real team and player names and released their saved option file online to the masses.

Fifa however, has a snazzy loading screen... Pro just loads too damn fast. That's a shame.
FringeRock on 29 May '07
fifa will never be better than pro, they dont understand what makes pro so special, they can have better graphics, commentary and more licensces but never the realism and most importantly the gameplay..

Better Graphics?
For me Pro evo wins on the graphics front as well as gameplay front, the players in Pro Evo look like who they're meant to be!
spooney100 on 29 May '07
I have to admit that when I brought Pro Evo 6 for Xbox 360 I was very disapointed it was no where near as good as 5 but as with all Pro Evo games they take a while to get used to. Up until recently I refused to play on Fifa games. Anybody can play fifa but pro evo is made for football fans, those with a knowledge of the game
the monk 21 on 29 May '07

Both suck though, i'll re-iterate that.

Unless I'm very much mistaken Pro Evo has always had proper ball physics in place. Why should EA be given any credit for finally doing something that should have been the basis for every FIFA game since the year dot?!

Evo has and always will be the finest footballing game around. If the only option available to me was FIFA then I simply wouldn't bother.

Despite the poor 360 version last year I still find Evo a joy to play. If you have no appreciation of Evo then you mustn't be a fan of footy games. FIFA is football for 5 year olds. Pick up pad, press a few buttons, win a game 5-0. No realism whatsoever. Evo requires more than a little dedication and thought on the part of the player.

A decent grasp of football basics also helps!
niksalt on 29 May '07
I've been a fan of the Pro Evo games since they were still called International Superstar Soccer, and there's no reason that should change.

I find the control systems more intuitive, which is a must when reaction times are the difference between a goal and a goal kick. FIFA always seemed really sluggish in comparison.

I'll freely admit that I know pretty much nothing about football. I don't watch it because I have almost no interest in the real sport, but I do enjoy playing the video game versions.

Pro Evo isn't just for dedicated football fans, because I'm not one. It's just that they make good games.
Dajmin on 29 May '07
Well with the clone gorm army that has passed through here recently im not suprised it sells loads. That still doesnt mean its a good game, just look at need for speed.
DAEDALUS79 on 29 May '07
Just because FIFA sells more, doesn't mean it's a better game.

Personally, I wouldn't wipe my bottom with a FIFA game. There's nothing fun about winning a match 15-Nil and having your keeper score 3 of them by running the length of the pitch.

I'm sticking with Pro Evo..I like my football realistic.
Squall5005 on 29 May '07
No.
colonel whiskers on 29 May '07
Pro Evo on the 360 was a joke, but still a lot better than crappy Fifa. It's no wonder Fifa sells so many copys when they bring about 5 different iterations a year.

Champions League *insert year*
Fifa *insert year*
Road to the Division 2 playoffs
Road to Euro 2008
Peter Beardsley's Penalty Shootout

The list goes on...
monkey_puncher on 29 May '07
But both games suck. It's a moot point.
They didn't really have much of a chance though, considering their subject matter.

Football, it is a bit overhyped isn't it?
A bunch of lads trying to get a bag of air into a net multiple times in order to win a drinking apperatus of some description...
Never understood the attraction myself. Seems pretty pointless. I'd rather spend 90 minutes gaming or whatnot than watching a relatively dull competition, the outcome of which has no bearing whatsoever on me.
But yes that's just my opinion.

Judging by critical response and the opinions of my friends who play football games, God help them Smile, EA are blowing smoke as usual. Pro Ev is always cited as the outright winner.
I've never played a football game myself but judging from EAs track record in other genres, I'd well believe it.

Not talking ball physics (those are a given), the players were governed by physics too. That's new that is.

really though, I'm very football-minded and I think both games are a pretty poor representation. I'm also a keen gamer, and neither game does that aspect well either.

You can't overhype playing it though Smile

Thank GOD!! After reading that article my life didn't make sense anymore, but now that ive seen the comments im happy again Laughing I mean any1 thats played both games will recognize Pro Ev is clearly the better.

That said, I have a friend who has been buying Fifa since it's release and I made it my mission to get him to play Pro Ev, after a while he agreed Pro Ev was the better but stayed buying Fifa because of his "loyalty to the brand". Maybe that is one explanation for its higher sales.

Btw EA coming out with this article is a disgrace imo.
Zael on 29 May '07
HAVE WE NOT BEEN HEARING THIS SAME PISH FOR 5 YEARS NOW. LAST 360 EFFORT WAS A DISCRACE. PRO EVO WAS A SHADOW OF ITS FORMER SELF (PRO EVO LITE I LIKE TO CALL IT) BUT IT STILL WIPED THE FLOOR GAMEPLAY WISE WITH FIFA. WE'LL WAIT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS TO THEM BOTH NOW THAT THEY'RES 2 PROPER NEXT GEN MACHINES OUT NOW (I DON'T COUNT THE Wii) BUT I'VE GOT A FEELING THAT PRO EVO ON THE PS3 IS GOING TO BLOW OUR MINDS. AND HOPEFULLY THEY DON'T DO ANOTHER HALF-ASSED PORT FOR THE 360. Razz

The only decent fifa ever was fifa 98 where you could play indoor 5-a-side and correct me if im wrong but pro evo wasnt out then. Pro evo is gaming gold and by far the best ever multiplayer game.

Of course fifa will sell more and probably have done every single year since pro evo was out but they have their game on every different console and also have a fan base of people who rave about licenses and love the childish simple easy gameplay fifa offers and wont admitt that pro is the better game as they have ranted on so long about how great fifa is if they changed their minds now they would look even more ridiculous.

No doubt that pro evo will thrash EA's poor attempt at a football game and will one day take over the not so important sales figures.
T12AV15 on 29 May '07
Thats already 1-0 to KONAMI then. FIFA running their mouths already, because they are getting nervous, knowing they are gonna get their asses handed to them on a plate again.

well done. Have a biscuit. It's still not as good as pro evo.

sorry couldnt be bottomd to read all the comments (not a footy fan Shocked )
but....what the f**k???? AS IF EVER fifa is better than pro evo...it just doesnt make sense???? Confused they (EA) have the rights to all the names/clubs/commentary etc
konami have the gameplay...go figure Rolling Eyes
seedaripper on 29 May '07
Well what would you really expect an EA executive to say?

"Pro Evo is better than Fifa, but hey, please buy Fifa anyway? Please?"

I don't think so.

Pro Evo is better than Fifa, that seems to be the opinion of most people here and I'd agree with that. However, picture it, neds/chavs and kids under 10 don't knwo what games are better than others and they'll go for the ones that have the licesnses because: "They wanna play like Rooney".

Staff in GAME etc. don't help either. If you ever go in and ask a GAME employee at least half of them will tell you FIFA. This is the unfortunate reason why Fifa is currently selling more than Pro Evo.
DiddyKong_Jr on 29 May '07
I dont mind who wins as long as they make a decent 360 version that is actually next gen.Im with Pro Evo 6 at the moment and despite the fact its a decent game I feel disappointed.
I suppose it would be better if FIFA got it right this time then we could have great gameplay and the licenses in the same game.

Realism OMG Last pro evo was so bad i will never touch one again it was crap in a box.
I hate Ea i really do but fifa is far more solid reaslistic and more FUN to play.
I saw pro for the 360 for 7.99 Euro that under 5 stg secand hand, Fifa si still dull price.

How the hell have EA manged to keep the license for our Premiership. I mean if I was spanish I get home open Pro Evo and I can play as Real Madrid, Barcelona.

If im Italian I got Jueventus, AC milan, Inter but Im not either Im a bloke from lancashire and Blackburn Rovers fan and I want my team called rovers n playing in blue and white halfs.

So my question is this how come EA wont let pro evo have the names for the best league in the world? Besides EAs run by yanks and what do they know about footie other than the fact that David Beckham plays.
Limerick on 30 May '07
Licenses are the reason that Fifa sells. If EA decided to give the rights to Konami, it would be corporate suicide for them in the UK, which is where the games sell best.

They're not in it for your enjoyment, they're in it for money, simple as.
DiddyKong_Jr on 30 May '07
Anyone reading this article who wants to dabble in a footy simulation for the first time should buy Pro Evolution Soccer because it is the better game. And it doesn't matter whether you like football or not.

Fifa is the preserve of the casual gamer (although most of my friends are casual gamers you know so don't cry) - it epitomises what EA are all about. Just look at all the games this company has released over the years, poor gameplay seems to be a pre-requisite.

Someone said once that the company doesn't deserve the negative stigma that is associated with it, but let me tell you it does, because they still sell more than nearly all of the talented other companies out there put together you inane bastards.

Now don't question or quote me I ain't too happy you know what I'm saying.
warpedAi on 30 May '07
I had both Fifa 07 and PES 6 on the 360. Now i personally thought they were both good games but each was stronger in different areas. Fifa 07 had better graphics and better leagues and the manager mode i thought was great. PES 6 on the other hand, had better gameplay and was an alround better game because of it. Its a shame they don't work together, to make an awesome football game.
CrippledHooba on 2 Jun '07
no one cares if fifa will outsell pro evo, pro evo will always be better than fifa. on 360 the players on fifa didn't even look like them. on pro evo nearly every player had his own likeness ,pro evo had more teams, game modes, skills.pro evo graphics were much clearer than fifa & it had much better gamplay.
there is no point buying fifa cause evry year it promises to be better than pro evo & evry year it's a disapointment

lets face it pro evo on 360 was poor. EA and FIFA team smell blood. When i was there 2 years ago they really believed they were there for the taking. Another bad outing from Konami and a half decent version from EA and the tables could be turning. I think they do understand what makes a good football game just they try and keep a bit of the FIFA heritage and that is the weak link in my opinion. I have to say Pro evo added nothing last year and although FIFA's additions are usually things for the marketing team to exploit invention is there each year. I still prefer pro evo by the way but Smile
