Wii hard drive on the way?

Internet ramblings point towards mass storage for Wii to come soon
Nintendo could be preparing to unveil a Wii hard drive according to recent internet rumours.

It has been suggested that Nintendo will be showing off new hardware at this year's E3 show, and all fingers point towards that being a hard drive to increase on the Wii's relatively small 512MB of internal memory.

Confirmation back in April that Neo Geo games will begin being added to Wii's Virtual Console download service adds weight to the speculation, considering Neo Geo games are huge - some clocking in it at up to 330MB. One of those bad boys would put serious strain on the Wii's memory.

We'll be reporting from E3 so stay tuned for more on that if and when it breaks.

So it's just plug into the USB port then or something? Kind of annoying as I want Neo Geo games so will have to get this. Although I have got a 2GB SD card plugged into my Wii.

unless its 1Gb I Don't see much point inn it.

Wouldent it have to be an external hard drive as you cannot use the SD cards to save games on unless im wrong! I dident see any add on parts like in the N64 and Gamecube so I guess it would be a standalone and perhaps you could buy differnt sizes, say one gig start up and then two to ten gigs?

You can save vc games on sd card but you can't play them from the cards. To play them you need to pull them over to the internal memory.

You're all talking like that can't change with a firmware patch.

Plug in your new HD, then a system update could be installed to give you the option of saving to and loading from the HD instead of the internal disk.

Piece of cake.

Although less than 20Gb and it won't be worth the bother. 1Gb would hold 3 of the article-mentioned Neo games, and that wouldn't be great. But since Ninty seem to be pretty good at finding budget hardware suppliers, I'm hoping they've struck a good deal with the HD makers.

Definitely good news for people who want to get some bigger games, or just those who plan on getting every VC title Smile

Neo-Geo games are in mega bits not mega bytes. After all they got all the metal slug games on the anthology disk!

330 megabit is about 42.25 Megabytes, although some neo games go over 700 Mb (87.5 megabytes)

Nintendo should allow saves directly on SD. Although since you can move the files, games you dont need can be stored on SD when not needed.

If they are releasing a hard drive, i want it to be at least 10GB. There's no point releasing 1GB or so, too small. With 10 they could even offer Saturn/Dreamcast games if the Wii has the power to emulate that.

Just don't see the point in releasing a hard drive for 1 or 2GB when they could probably update the firmware to allow SD cards to be accessed direct for that.

I very much doubt they would realease a 1gig hd - it would cost more to make it than sell it on!

I expect in the region of 20gig if they have there wits about them, and they normally do.

Come on it's got to happen, there's no way 512MB will last 5 years or whatever the Wii's lifespan is. And people don't wanna build up an expensive collection of SD cards just to save games/channels/saves. Please Nintendo, give us at least 10Gig!

Another problem Ninty need to sort is the lack of background downloading. I don't want to have to watch that mario animation for a good 30mins to an hour to download a 350mb file, or however long it will take.
maugrim2712 on 4 Jun '07
Wii desperately needs a hard drive. I'm tired of running out of memory while surfing the web. Need a place to upload music tracks for gaming instead of relying on the SD card, which I think is currently only used by Excite Truck for music anyway.

20GB is plenty since the Wii doesn't use HD content.

So whats the point of the SD cards? I thought they stored the VC downloads? Thats why I got a 2gig one. And how do you transfer VC games to it?
ted1138 on 4 Jun '07
They're basically just elaborate memory cards. Hope this helps ted1138

Oh my God, that would be annoying. All you'd hear is that coin collecting noise for about 15 minutes! Aaaaargh!!!!!!!

The Neo Geo games won't be as big as they once were...

Early games will could be as small as 5-10mb, with the later memory monsters a possible 30-50mb.

If they do end up being just as memory hungry, then that shows that someone, somewhere is being extremely lazy.

I'd prefer this revelation to be something else... not sure what but not a boring hard drive (someone mentioned firmware? Would it not be possible to update the way the Wii talks to the SD card for moer memory?), something new and fannig the flames, so to speak.
boskersrevenge on 4 Jun '07
couldn't they put up new game demos instead of old virtual games and then let us download those onto the hard drive? i have no interest in vc games but new game demos on the internet like you get on the 360 is what the wii should have.
