Friday 8-Jun-2007 3:00 PM Bungie has collaboration with LotR director on Halo "animated series," says Microsoft's Shane Kim UPDATE: "transcription error"
Microsoft's Shane Kim may have accidentally dropped more info on Peter Jackon's mysterious Halo project, which he's referred to as the Halo "animated series".
When asked if Bungie already has a post-Halo 3 project in line, the Microsoft Game Studios boss told GameSpy: "Oh yeah. Bungie has their plans well mapped out. You have to, when you have a studio like that, and you need to know what you're moving your people on to. So they have the collaboration with Peter Jackson on the animated series.
"I'm not sure about the specifics. They'll be done with Halo 3 this year, but we haven't announced any dates on the Halo 3 series."
Bloody hell. So what happened to Jackon's "interactive" game project? It never was clear what exactly the Lord of the Rings director was working on with Halo, so perhaps the project was scaled back to a straight-forward animated series based around Halo 3 or maybe Kim isn't telling us the full story...
Frankly, we're more than happy with the animated series. We've already worn out the Thundercats DVD and a Halo cartoon is a guaranteed formula for success; iconic hero, religious baddies, sci-fi battlegrounds and laser swords. Wait, haven't we seen that film before?!
UPDATE: Gamespy has pulled the quote citing a "transcription error". Apparently Shane Kim only labeled the upcoming project as an "interactive" series. GameSpy "regrets the error".
It could still be interactive. They might pre-animate a few different outcomes for each situation and you text in. "If you want Master Chief to shoot that guy, text Halo1" "If you want Master Chief to kick Miranda Keyes in the face, text Halo2" "If you want Master Chief to attempt to make out with Cortana, electrocuting him and leaving him horribly disfigured, text Halo3"
Lets hope the show is of the calibur of Viva Pinata. Particularly the... brilliant voice acting!
Originally wasn't PJ's project meant to be a Halo-based, episodic, semi-interactive story for Xbox 360? And doesn't that mean 'Halo animated series' in technical jargon? Yes it does! Nothing new here.
