Ninja Gaiden to silence PS3 critics, says Team Ninja

Ninja Gaiden Sigma is the best it can be on PS3, producer Yosuke Hayashi tells CVG
Team Ninja's Yosuke Hayashi, producer and director for Ninja Gaiden Sigma, says that the developer chose to dedicate Sigma to PS3 to make it the best game it could be, and is confident that its achievements will silence PS3 critics.

"Multi-format videogames have boomed in recent years, but when you make a game for multiple formats you cannot focus on one machine's specific capabilities - you have to focus on a common ground for all formats," Hayashi said at a Sigma event today.

"It is Team Ninja's policy to push a console to its limit and set high standards. Team Ninja wanted to make Ninja Gaiden Sigma the best action game it could be, and push gaming standards to its upper limit. That is why we chose to make the game for PS3."

He later went on to say: "I have heard much criticism of the PS3, but I am confident that Ninja Gaiden Sigma will demonstrate how powerful the PS3 really is."

So why not make an original game from the ground up for PS3, instead of and Xbox remake? The clearly confident Hayabashi explains, "We still see Ninja Gaiden on Xbox as the number-one action game, and so we want as many people as possible to experience that game."

He went on to explain that Sigma uses self-shading techniques and other advanced graphical effects in full 1080p resolution and still manages to maintain a solid 60 frames per second which, he claims, no other game in the current generation has managed. "That includes games on Xbox 360," Hayashi adds.

You'll be able to tell us whether you agree or disagree with Hayashi-san when the demo launches in a couple of weeks time (exact date yet to be confirmed), before the full game's July launch.

I got the demo off the US Store, and sorry lads but I don't think it's going to silence anyone.
Sure it runs nice and smooth (and I was playing in 1080p), but the graphical differences between Sigma and the original on Xbox are minimal. Basically higher resolution and lots of bloom lighting (its almost overused like in Genji). Ryu's clothes are a bit more detailed too but nothing awe-inspiring. Still the good ol' Team Ninja plastic arms too.

That said, I'm still buying it when it releases, but it is nowhere near as impressive looking as Team Ninja obviously think it is.

Considering its a remake of an Xbox 1 game i would expect it to be able to use lots of features.
The guy is right though, Ninja Gaiden is most likley the #1 action game on any format and its nice that the PS3 owners will be able to experience this great game.

Nobody spouts hyperbole like Team Ninja spouts hyperbole.

I don't care if I can see individual droplets of sweat on Rachel's cleavage, it's still an, albeit excellent, old Xbox game that's now being released for the third time, and it's unlikely to get gamers creaming their pants for a PS3.

They're no doubt lining up yet another re-release for the next generation consoles, cos, you know, it's TEH BEST GAME EVAR!!!11

I'm not saying we should p**s all over it, as PS3 players are no doubt in for a shiny ninja treat, but lets not dress it up as the next best thing since... summat else.

Stigma is a solid game no arguments & is good fun but this will silence no one!, i dont know what planet these guys live on, or what other consoles they've been playing lately but they've got a long way to go before they start making real waves. Besides if games where food & this game was dog sh1t (which it isn't) the PS3 owners are so hungry for something (anything!!) new they'd eat it up!... let hope Team Ninja raise the bar for the proper Ninja gaiden 2.... the one on the 360.

& why has it taken sooo long 4 the demo to come to the UK?... ohh yer we're Sony's after thought..."better send it to them as well"...Fcuk 'em.
hollywood111 on 13 Jun '07
What I want to know is when is the demo going tobe on the uk store has its been on us store for ages.
steve w on 13 Jun '07
this game looks decent, hopefully it will turn out well. what they are saying is probably complete rubbish, still it is impressive if theyve got it all at 1080p at 60fps constantly.
ArchFlameTera on 13 Jun '07
if he's so concerned with exploiting the potential of the most powerful system (which, according to the overtone of his comments, he believes to be the PS3), then why did he decide on porting an old XBox game to the system instead of making cold-hard next-gen sequel complete with a newer engine? though i'm an opponent of multi-platform development, i'm also still concerned by his stance on it. Team Ninja will probably consider the installed base of the 360 and the hardcore XBox fanatic when making NG's sequal, instead of the potentially superior capabilities of the PS3, which could make for a better gaming experience. hence, with opposition to multi-platforming, NG2 will probably end up exclusive to the 360 with slightly inferior graphics than it can potentially have on the PS3. but i guess Live could in some way offer a more engaging gaming experience...somehow.

Jealousy is a nasty thing. I think most of you people are quick to judge a game that is not even out yet! I think the real reason is because it is on the PS3 and not the 360 and it is the only the game that runs at 1080p at 60fps constantly. Also i see a few of you saying that NG2 will be only on the 360! Has TN even said anything about NG2 and what console it will be on? if so please give me a link! NG2 on the PS3 me thinks Very Happy

Itagaki, the head of Team Ninja, is very loyal to Xbox. That is why he was NOT directly involved in the creation of Sigma, because he is believed to be working on NG2 for the 360 as well as his Ninja Gaiden DS game.
gazza_be on 13 Jun '07
Right now, I dont care about the ps3 difference, because Ive never played it before. It looks good, and Im getting it(and therefore, playing it on the hardest difficulty).

Everyone should stop complaining, where is the love?

Firstly, PS3 is not the only console that can do 1080p at 60fps. After all, its an Xbox 1 port tarted up for PS3 owners so i would expect that sort of performace...
As for NG2, i think its common knowledge it will be on 360. The real question is if it will be exclusive or not. The fact that PS3 is getting NG1 tells me NG2 will only be a timed 360 excluisve for about a year.
I think that works well for both 360 and PS3 owners.
vulcanraven01 on 13 Jun '07
@Vulcanraven01 Ahhh, and to think it was just over a year ago Microsoft execs were so scared of the PS3 they were telling people that "1080p was impossible."

Funny that he didn't really say that it'll silence anyone; went as far as saying that he hasn't heard much criticism and that it's a great showcase title. I agree in that respect (showcase), considering that worse looking games like Genji ran at an inconsistent 30fps.

Perhaps silence some developers complaining that it's too hard to develop for, not gamers who will still be complaining about the lack of content like myself.

But anyway, it just never ceases to amaze me to hear some say that the differences are minimal and going as far as calling it a port. Boot up NG Black to see what I mean; I think it's the similar art direction is what threw you off. Some people did think that DOA4 wasn't much of an improvement over DOAU because of that for example.

Right from the get go, the first area with the waterfall is no more. What's there now is autumn trees with thousands of leaves falling. The texture resolution has been bumped up and there is more variety, and the animations are better (there are new ones there too). Higher poly counts, much better lighting, and smoother transitions between animations. The particles are great, and the self shadowing is evident even at my modest 1080i set.. among other little details. In short, it's an overhaul BUT with the same general art direction so yeah, Ryu looks like an action figure. My only complaints are the overusing of depth of field, and bloom lighting.. self shadowing aside, the game can use better shadow maps.

Sigma is a great remake, but it's certainly no killer app unless you're a die hard fan of the original Xbox versions. I am, so I can't wait personally.

I don't understand developers. Has industry creativity stalled so greatly that an Xbox title deserves to be remade for the PS3?

I understand some sentiments about graphical improvements, but surely people can't be excited about this? Like Oblivion for the PS3, Sigma is a rehashed port for the die hard fan and the gamer that hasn't played it before.

What's next? GTA3 revisted? Mario 64 tarted up? I want to see some original titles, really pushing the boundaries of games evolution. If not this new generation of consoles are hardly proving their existence necessary.
aj101 on 13 Jun '07
grrr fanboy rubbish
Good to see that the PS3 actually has a decent new game though
lmimmfn on 14 Jun '07
@KazuakiTT

Nice. Those are the nicest shots of NGS I've seen. Cheers. All the other close-up shots turned me off as they looked like they were trying to hard to impress. That close to the game made it look very plastic.

But no, love the Autumn look and character detail... looking forward to the demos in shops.

Still hate the game play though. Rubbish difficulty curve meant I just couldn't be bottomd and it ruined what should have been a stonking ninja game!
boskersrevenge on 14 Jun '07
I have to agree with what others have posted here.

I own both an Xbox 360 and PS3 so I downloaded the NG Sigma demo from the US PS Store the minute it was released. Although it's undoubtedly a stunning game (even after two years), the PS3 running at 720p doesn't play or look substantially different to the Xbox version of NG Black, which I play on the 360 upscaled to 720p. Sure, the textures are nicer and there are leaves blowing about, etc., but after three minutes, it feels just like you're playing the Xbox version (minus the rumble effects obviously) and you forget about the visual improvements. Also I've heard that some people have been getting awful v-sync tearing which I've yet to see despite having played the demo three times but maybe it only occurs at 1080p?

NG Sigma definitely appears to be the best version of the game from the demo but then running on a far more powerful machine, it bloody well should be. Still if PS3-only owners get to experience this fantastic game then it can only be a good thing...
Darren1967 on 14 Jun '07
It will take more than this game to silence PS3 critics....
monkey_punch on 14 Jun '07
It definately won't be this game to silence anyone and I doubt that this game will even remotely "push the system to its limits". For games of this caliber I'm still looking forward to seeing games like Heavenly Sword, Lair, and of course the mysterious Killzone 2. Perhaps maybe then I may consider getting a PS3.....
MarcuFenix on 14 Jun '07

That's exactly the thing, it's not a new game.

If people will buy the same old cr*p tarted up, congrats to you for helping the industry stagnate.

I want new games that make the most of the PS3s power, not a two year old xbox game dressed up in PS3 clothes.
aj101 on 15 Jun '07
I just saw the trailer on the playstation network and WOW does it look good. I couldn't care less if its already been out twice before it looks great. Also, considering its been made from the ground up its going to be good. I'm actually very surprised that microsoft didn't try very hard to get this game.
CrippledHooba on 16 Jun '07
And i bet you're the kind of gamer who complains that the wii is contributing to industry stagnation by promoting endless mini-game compilations. If all it takes is pretty graphics to impress you, I wouldn't like to talk to your girlfriend.

The overall trend to me in gaming, both Wii and Xbox360/PS3 is disturbing.
