The release of the highly-anticipated Gran Turismo 5 on PS3 could be pushed back as far as late 2008 says director Kaunori Yamauchi, who wants the game to be absolutely perfect before it's released.
Speaking with US-based Car and Drive magazine (via Gamers-Creed), Yamauchi touted spring 2008 as the earliest that the game could see release, but affirmed that Sony is more than willing to push that date back to the end of the year should his team need more time.
Yamauchi made reference to the cars as being one of the key time-consuming aspects of developing the game. It's taking 180 days for someone to build a car in the levels of detail required for GT5, as oppose to 30 days for GT3 and just one day for the original GT on PSone.
Crash damage has also once again been ruled out, Yamauchi saying that some companies don't want their cars smashed up in the game (despite damage featuring on the licensed cars of PGR, Forza and other games).
He also says adding the perfect damage system would mean changing the physics model of the game, and modelling each panel of every car separately, both normal and crumpled, with different lighting and shadows. Again, if other games can do it, why can't GT? They're not exactly short of time.
He did say, however, that crash damage could possibly be delivered as a post-release download, and that downloadable cars were a certainty.
Meanwhile, you'll have to make do with the minimalist offerings provided in GT HD for another year or more.
As darth vader once (quite terribly) exclaimed, 'Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!'
Feel a bit better now.
p.s. Are they still including an in-car view and dynamic weather into the mix? If so I can live without damage, doesn't add much to a game anyway, unless it's burnout of course.
But late 2008?! 'Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!'
I'd say it's due to how mind-numbingly boring Gran Turismo is... "Yeah I really don't know what happened. Development was going fine until we initiated play testing, now at least 3/4 of the entire development team is asleep at any given time."
There are plenty of PS3 games to look forward to, but in my opinion this isn't one of them. So I don't care when it comes out. Woo! Productive and meaningful post! Woo! ...oh wait.
AAHHHH!, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wot a load of sh1t, cant anyone get a fcuking game ready for this console!... waste of fcuking money
how long has that tool been on about companies not wanting their cars smashed up as an excuse, when other games are doing it now. The bumping car play style of the previous GT games is what made them crap and why i eventually lost interest( i used to be a big fan, got GT1,2,3,4 ). Slamming into a wall at 200mpg just to bounce off it is 10 years old now. Its obvious he's not capable of a damage physics model and afraid to rewrite the GT engine
Next they'll remove online.
GT is dead, i used to be so innovative, now its just rehash the same game for the next consoles. GT3 was crap in comparison to GT2 as it was only a quarter of that game. That was fixed in GT4, but there wasnt anything really new at all. I figure this version is GT3 on the PS3.
It sounds to me like the developers are too focused on the graphics rather than the gameplay - I mean 180 days for someone to model a car!!!
The news that the game will again have no damage modelling is really disappointing, especially as both Forza Motorsport games featured it and they both had hundreds of cars from different manufacurers like Gran Turismo. Forza Motorsport 2 might look a little underwhelming visually (although it's by no means poor) but as a simulation, it totally rocks and I'd be surprised if GT 5 surpasses it let alone matches it for feel.
I just hope that the developers remember to add some competitive A.I. this time round...
If one of Sony's own developers is taking this long to create a game for the console, whilst still having access to Sony's help etc, is it any wonder that so few exclusive games exist for the PS3 at the moment? How long has this title been in development so far? And how long will it have taken when it's finally ready for release? How long will it take for a small independent studio to create games without Sony's assistance? Is this another reason why we've seen so many software titles ported across from the 360 rather than being written specifically for the PS3?

I really doubt that that is the reason. We are still waiting for the PSP GT after all. They're just slack. Not that I'm too interested in GT. Not too into the whole 'realistic driving' thing (though surprisingly Forza 2 has given me a couple of weeks of fun before I started to get bored), I'm much more interested in the new Wipeout.
To all the PS3 fans laughing at Forza...its least its here to play lads, only 2 more years before (maybe) you can get your hands on GT5 which only be overhyped and overated as normal anyway...play for today people.

When 75% of the cars are rubbish anyway (of the try-once-and-sell variety), I'd question the need to even have 300+ cars in a game in the first place let alone 900!!!
Personally I'd rather have 100 or so, like PGR 3, with deep customisation options and an incar dashboard view. Forza 2 is a terrific game but I find I'm missing the incar view that DiRT, PGR 3 and Test Drive Unlimited have as it's so immersive. Most of the time I play Forza 2 from the external view and it's not the same and the bonnet view just doesn't feel right either.

GT5 may yet have an in-car view, though with 900+ cars to design, maybe thats why it is taking them so long. Also, I've heard that it will also include up to 20 people online and have dynamic weather (that changes whilst you play). Should still be v/good.
Crash damage has also once again been ruled out, Yamauchi saying that some companies don't want their cars smashed up in the game (despite damage featuring on the licensed cars of PGR, Forza and other games)
Thats such a cop out. I just don't understand anymore why people love GT so much. Every game has gone through huge delays, and then the final game is always underwhelming.
And 180 days to "make a car". Come on...... seriously wtf!! Is some programmer gonna sit there for half a year modelling ONE CAR. This is all just publicity talk. And their list of 900 cars....... about 100 of them will be different editions of the same Nissan Skyline! (I do like Skylines though )
PGR3 and Test Drive Unlimited were both great racing games on the 360, and from what I've played of Forza 2, I've been very impressed. I just don't understand why it takes so long to make GT games.
The GT game formula is tired, they could have made it a great game if it had damage, but it'll remain the kiddies sim, Forza has far surpassed it. No point in GTs realistic visuals when its only an arcade racer
I guess theyre spending so long designing the cars because extra cars will be sold online now in the Playstation Store

900+ Cars! can you imagine how many of those are model iterations of the same car? Golf 1.4, Golf 1.6, Golf 1.8, Golf 2.0, Golf TDI........ yawn....
Forza 2 has enough of these with 300 cars!
No damage in a sim nowadays is just poor. I recognise that even Forzas damage model is not completely realistic but it at least show you have crashed and this crash damage affects the handling of the car and adds penalty points time to your lap time to stop the GT trick of using other cars to guide you around the corner. I personally got fed up with GT after the second one.
I've never had any problems with Tekken... and it's Tekken, a lot of people love it. Lemmings is good, Calling All Cars and Super Stardust are great. It takes time for things like this to pick up, as it did Live. I really don't understand why you're moaning about Wipeout... it's a PS1 game... put up there mainly to transfer and play on PSP, why would it look anything other than crappy compared to newer stuff? Hopefully new, decent stuff will keep coming steadily every week.
there is no new stuff. (with the exception of ninja gaiden which is great) its either demos of mediocre games u wouldnt waste your time with, demos of game u already own, or mostly second rate filler and mini games - f**king pathetic if u ask me. it should be stuff at least to showcase the ps3's power, not stuff that was made for your commadore 64.
xbox live has demos of colin mccrae dirt and rainbow 6 vegas, where are the ps3 demos? these games are out on ps3 too.. we get stuck with a hoard 2D puzzle games to pass the time - great
Calling All Cars and Super Stardust are new. You seem to have a lot of hate for PS3, why do you even own one if you spit so much venom at it?
calling all cars and stardust are, if im not mistaken, 2D 'fun games'
Have you played them? If not, you should. They're not 2D 'fun games'. Granted, they're not full size retail releases but they don't take away any development time from actual retail games. David Jaffe has already said he wants to make more smaller PSN style games.
they are not something a serious gamer would want to play - or any gamer would want to play if it werent for the fact there nothing else to play!!! these 'games' wouldnt get a look in if there were anything half decent going..
I class myself as a serious gamer and I want to play them. Why wouldn't others?
its not venom, would u say u were happy shelling out Ł440 to play f**king lemmings and such toss?
Ł440? RRP is Ł425 and you can pick them up for Ł350 online... but yes, i'm quite happy with it so far, more so than the Wii but still, I can't really complain about that as I'm an early adopter of consoles and I take my chances.
the 360 costs half the price and delivers twice the fun.. for comparison
But it didn't start out like that... I've had one of those since day one too. You have to give it time. The fact is you're posting on here... You're obviously a 'serious gamer', as you put it, and as such probably keep up with what's new, what's coming and what's available on each machine, which means you'd probably know what was on PS3 so far yet you still made the decision to buy one. If you didn't know then you should have done some research first as most people do before they drop so much money on a piece of equipment. You can't really complain too much. Like I said, if you buy a console early you take your chances with what you get for your money, if you don't like what's available don't buy the machine

WTF people! Why is everyone saying GT sucks? I bet 90% of you played all the other GT's and loved them! Also the reason the game is taking so long is because they don't want GT5 to be the same as other GT's but with better looks! The reason is because they want the game to be perfect in every way and to do that they need to take time with it. Trust me it wont take till the end of 08 to finish but when it does come out you going to see what all the hype was about! Long Live GT!

ferg85, maybe your a f**king c**t?
mmmmeeeeoooowww! somebody woke up on the wrong side of bed today! Maybe a glass of warm milk and a cookie will calm you down a bit!
crash-damage negates realism. if you run into a wall driving a car 200 mph, then its GAME OVER! period. crash damage will effectively turn a driving simulation like GT into an arcade racer like Burnout. Polophony Digital have always been perfectionist when it comes to car models and realism in GT. if car-damage is that important to you, why not just play Forza and stop making a fuss that GT doesn't have it.
there are to many xbox people on here slagging of a game that no one has played. I have Forza 2 and if it was not for online it would be average. The A.I is appalling and not mentioned in any review. They just drive into you no matter what, its useless. I always reserve judgment until i can play a game.
Forza 2's damage system was a little underwhelming, smash into a wall at 200 mph and the spoilers come off and the paint is scractched
Realism ¬¬
I never really cared for GT to have damage, would rather the time was spent making the cars look as good as they do in GT HD.
And i don't think many will complain if the car list turns up to be over 900, where as Forza was in the 300-400 category
Bulls**t... smash into a wall at 200mph in Forza with full simulation damage the effects are immediate. The damage can affect your steering, braking balance, engine etc... and thats if your car actually survives... maybe its not as harsh as real life would be.. but it does have an effect on how you play the game.
Personally I never gave two hoots about the GT franchise. All this collecting cars business is too much like a Max Power-endorsed version of Pokémon!
Anyone who believes that these games are an accurate simulation of real cars have clearly never driven an actual car. They're very definitely exaggerated in every way so who cares how much realism goes into these racing games.
They look pretty, they're good fun and that's about it. GT has always sent me to sleep which it's pretentious belief that it's a "simulation".
So for once, I throw reasoned arguments out of the window and say GT5 delayed? Who cares?!!
well sorry vermicetti (is that a form of pasta) but tekken5 and its ilk...i.e super stardust HD,lemmings,super-rub a dub, folksoul, blast factor,fl0w,gundamn musou, hot shots golf5 etc(FREE demos)...all look f**king mint on my 47in 1080p capable tv... if you think they look s**t, invest into a new tv with your new console and shut the f**k up!

LOL nice to have you back seeds! Where the hell have you been?

as far as the delay; who didn't see this coming?
Your argument makes no sense. You say crash damage negates realism and that Polyphony are perfectionists when it comes to realism. Crash damage IS realism! You don't see cars bounce off walls without a scratch in real life do you?
Personally, I got bored after GT3. Too few tracks and too many crap cars that I'll never use, therefore are pointless.
I have played the GT series to DEATH! I love them..
But, for a company that is effectively SONY.. COME ON!? A year and a half, maybe 2 years more.. WTF!??
I`m having an absolutely BRILLIANT time playing Forza 2 atm.. pure class.. offline and online. (yeah the AI can be harsh but it actually mentions this in the manual, and I don`t care.. bump back.. ever seen the BTCC? oh and BTW WTF is the GT AI like? eh?)
Why not cut back on the proposed <sarc>1,000,000,000,000 cars</sarc> and release it when people want it? (without so many, i hate to say it, rubbish, cars?)..
Maybe just me, but wouldn`t the hard core racer fraternity that Sony/Polyphony have been VERY instrumental in creating; having seen a decent (Forza2) sim/driving game just migrate to the 360 so that they can have that racing goodness right now? on 360? Why not?
Why wait (up to) 2 years of your life for a potentially inferior (it may well be better.. (IT HAD BETTER BE!!) racing game? It can`t be that much better, Forza2 is already "uncanny valley". I mean, what`s gonna be better about it? Have you seen Forza in full flight at 60fps? MS got 3-4 MAJOR tyre companies data when doing the tyre model for Forza2 (sorry to sound like a fanboy but this stuff means something to me. Esp when you can get a 360 and play Forza 2 NOW, then a GOOD year (maybe 2) later, get a PS3 when it`s cheap and get GT5?))
I find the Polyphony/Sony/GT5 late report is so surprising. It`s like they want to fail.. A killer GT game on PS3 RIGHT NOW would make me buy the "infernal thing".
WTF?
p.s. (I own a ps2, xbox, wii, snes, megadrive, 360, (good)pc and hopefully a ps3 when Sony see sense and start selling it a sensible price)

turkey strangely enough....you on psn network?? resistance?motorstorm?psn network games?rainbow six? anyhow if so...give us a shout PSN : seedaripper1973
Sony are NOT releasing another GT game for any format, its just a marketing tool to shift consoles, look at the psp version, oh you cant. next will be the psp2 version, which will disapear without a trace, then comes the ps4 version.
Fact: Forza 3 will come out before ANY new Gran Turismo game

Crash into a wall head first at 200 miles an hour in forza 2, and your breaks, steering, engine, drive shaft, suspension, glass, raditor goes completly, leaving you unable to rev the engine and struggling to make first gear and move the car, along side the body work being crumpled and things fallen off, i agree its not 100% there yet in terms of what would happen, but its the best their allowed to do, through the licensing of actual cars, ever wonder why car makers dont want their cars to turn over onto their roof in a crash? or wheels to come off? it makes their cars look bad, even though in movies its allowed.
As for GT5 being well late, and having no damage mode, i cant say im suprised too be honest, as 180 days to model one car, that really is rubbish, it didnt take anywhere near that for forza 2 or PGR3, one having real physics and handling the other having best car models in terms of graphics in a console driving game.
Its clear GT5 needs online play, it needs damage model, it need real world physics like forza 2, or it will be the same boring game as the first one turned out to be, ie 200mph bumper cars, where the ai take the same line around each course and never change.
This is a message to "Theideal" and "Vercetti 102". why don't you two girls get a room? It would bee interesting to see what the lovechild offspring of a fanboy and console hater would look like!!Not to mention which console they would prefer..As for the subject in hand...GT1 was and will always remain to be the forefather of all decent driving games around..Simulator or otherwise...Along with FF7/GTA/GT! the playstation set the bar for all other consoles to follow..don't you think that Kazanouri knows what theexpectations are?/Feel the love in the Forum.....do fanboys have a picture of their console selotaped above their beds..oooeeerrr!!!

Aaah... that 'F' word again. The fact that I spend most of my time on the 360 obviously makes me a PS3 fanboy

That's exactly what I meant Love, the 29 year old, virtually, though thankfully not yet, married bloke who should have better things to do than this.
Ironically, i'm 31, married with two beautiful children..hope you're not offended by my childish banter..still, give you a whooping at motorstrom sometime..peace

LULz... No worries. Childish banter is what the internet was invented for... well... that and easy access to rude pictures.
surprised nobody seems to be discussing the biggest mistake in gaming corporate history..well ok maybe not but can someone please tell sony and also makers of next formula 1 game that force feedback is a crucial and integral part of the enjoyment. what´s next plan...shoot em ups without weapons ?

Hi GIRLS! Why is it a requirement that gamers fight over which console is better than which?
ITS A GAMES CONSOLE! YOU PLAY GAMES ON IT! FOR FUN!
I've just purchased a PS3, and GT-HD is great fun! I'm a bit of an old timer, I suppose, coz I started this mallarky when ALL games were sh1t. Maybe we should stop being spoilt little girls, and start appreciating the effort required to make some of these "piles of crap"? As a software engineer, I am in awe when I look at what Polyphony have achieved!! They deserve our respect, and our money. But if you're not a driving sim fan, f*&K OFF!
