MS to cut costs with new 'Falcon' 360

Report says Microsoft to reduce 360 production costs with new processors this year
Microsoft is to roll out a revised version of the Xbox 360 soon as part of a cost-cutting initiative codenamed 'Falcon', it's been reported.

According to Mercury News, 'Falcon' is the code name given to the new innards of a revised 360, which is said to feature new central and graphics processors that are manufactured in a 65-nanometer production process (as opposed to the older 90-nanometer processors in current models).

For the non-techie readers out there, this basically means that the chips are smaller which brings with it a range of benefits: cheaper production cost; cooler running temperature; increased reliability and increased space within the console.

Decreased productions cost normally lead to a retail price drop.

It is no surprise that the console's hardware is to be revised - Sony has reduced the production cost of PS2 to under a quarter the original cost, and 360 itself has had new quieter DVD drives slapped in them.

But these 'Falcon' machines are expected to resolve the reliability issues that forced Microsoft to extend 360 warranties to three years, promising to "retroactively" reimburse customers who have previously paid for repairs related to the three red lights of death.

"We have a bunch of different projects that cost reduce and improve quality as you find issues, as does our competition," said Microsoft boss Peter Moore. "Once you get millions in the field, you learn about the box under all kinds of different circumstances, you can adjust and tweak what you do accordingly."

If true, the introduction of these 'new' consoles could spell the end of the dreaded Three Red Lights of Death syndrome that's wiped out many Xbox 360s already.

So does this mean that people who return faulty 360s under the new 3 year warranty are going to get them replaced with the Falcon model instead?

That'd be nice.

I find MS quite funny with their names

XBox (c'mon it sounds cool! it's X Box. It's got an X on it!)

360 (yeah cus... circle)

Falcon?

Wth?

Don't get me wrong, I think the consoles themselves are pretty darn good, but the names crack me up.

Then again, I just got off playing my Wii...
gothchild on 9 Jul '07
I guess this is leading up to a price cut now.
At least they can say this is the reason for any cut, and not becuase the ps3 has just had one..
basscadet on 9 Jul '07
About time they revised the design, especially if it makes it more reliable.
Luna-C on 9 Jul '07
They can keep the price the same, as long as the Falcon version's reliable!

The original XBox name derived from Microsoft's DirectX gaming API for Windows, IIRC...

Should have called it the Icarus. He had a problem with a red light, did'nt he? Heh. Laughing
Mark240473 on 9 Jul '07
Most likley either see a price cut annoucement for 360 at E3, or MS might wait until Nov when people have already snapped up Halo 3 and GTA 4.
vulcanraven01 on 9 Jul '07
I'd have called it the XBox 360 Predator. Because if those 3 red lights appeared on you, you'd know you were dead Smile

An honest and hearty thank you for that.
No one's been able to tell me the reasoning.

It still seems a lil tacky, but at least justified now Smile

Yes the above is true and I believe the original name was DirectX Box.... then shortened to Xbox.

Does anyone know what the current turnaround is for getting your 360 fixed...mine bit the dust with the 3 red lights of s**te on Saturday & i've found it impossible to get through to European support as it's constantly engaged!

I've mailed them and got the Ticket No. to say I'm in the system but i've got a horrible feeling it could be a very long wait and can feel the GOW withdrawals coming on already!!

Unfortunately, it isn't great. My mate sent his away 4 weeks ago, today is the start of week five... he is still waiting but apparently he should expect it this week.

Sorry to give you bad news, but the 360 is a great console... the service at present isn't.

Nah, maybe it's from the Millenium Falcon? Unreliable, but she's got it where it counts, kid. (Groooarr says chewie in the background)

Would just like to know when (or if) they will replace current defective 360s with this one.

Imagine a quiter 360...I must be dreaming....

Quite funny! Especially considering it sounds like the millenium falcon when switched on! (Aaaarggg says chewie) Laughing

I'm on five working weeks already and I just spoke to them and got this response...

'hello Mr David, thank you for holding, I have spoken with my supervisor and you should be getting your machine returned within 7 working days'

Considering the factually incorrect responses I've had from prior conversations with them, I'm not betting the farm on this answer either.

Kick up a fuss and try and get some compensation for this.

You might want to check with Trading Standards. I believe Microsoft have a legal obligation to repair the console within a reasonable timescale, or, if they're unable to do so, provide you with a new console.

Not sure whether I'm 100% correct. I'm sure someone here will correct me if I'm wrong.

My mate kicked up a fuss after his 3rd console got 3 red lights and they sent him a completly new boxed console.

Definetly worth kicking up a fuss me thinks!

I've been waiting (and praying) for a redesigned, quieter, more reliable 360. PLEASE LET IT BE TRUE!
Stewgeary999 on 9 Jul '07
the games are so good dammit, that I'll buy any consle with the numbers 360 at the end of it. because all I wanna do is play those lovely games!
Mass Effect, GTA4, Halo 3, Ninja Gaiden 2, Bioshock!
the quality just doesn't stop coming.
Apollian24 on 9 Jul '07
So, falcon is the name of the hardware revision I've been waiting for... it's a lot easier than calling it, "you know, the new one with the smaller cpu and gpu, with the more efficient dvd drive...".

ok so i been havin nightmares bout the red ring of death and have done all sorts of things to stop it occuring. last night my nightmare became reality. i mean come on, this console was never ready to hit the shelves. not only that but i do believe that the 'zephyr' or elite was supposed to have the internal upgrade that the falcon has. whats the point of an elite if its still gunna die, ok so theres the hard drive which is NEEDED and the hdmi which is a nice touch. oooo i no its a different colour, whoop whoop f***ing woop. ive neveer known neone more money grabbin than microsoft, and we all fall for it cos we love it, i love the 360 but wish microsoft could do something for the gamer and not for themselves!!!
