In a surprise move, Sony yesterday slashed the price of PS3 by $100 to $499 in the US, as it prepares to unleash the 80GB model in the same region. But Nintendo isn't bothered, according to George Harrison.
"A $100 price drop won't make a difference," said the ssenior Nintendo VP. "Can Sony afford a $200 price drop? I don't think so," he added.
There may not be queues outside shops and the Wii is still in a comfortable lead over the pricier PS3, but the new lower price of the high-def console is bound to close the gap a little.
good one sony (sarcastic), the best thing to do when your console's not selling probably isn't to bring out another pointless version, god do they think everyone is a memory whore or something, i mean 60gb is more than enough and even if that does run out im sure you can get a good memory card down the line a few years which will cost less than $100
I think it will make a difference. I am not going to buy a PS3 yet as it still hasn't got any games I want that I haven't already played on the 360 or xbox. However, the price is looking more attractive now so I think many people may be tempted to get one which is good as MS and Nintendo may do some better deals too.
MS are looking at reducing costs with their falcon chip and I am sure Nintendo will be looking to do the same, they certainly both can afford to. I wonder if people will be swayed to buying PS3 for the blu-ray or not, I am not interested at all in it right now as I don't wanna have to rebuy my whole collection of movies for it. Games machines for games and PS3 isn't doing well in that department at the monent. Even if they sell more though of them they are losing $300 a machine!? I wonder what effects that will have on a company selling a million units at such a loss and could they ever recoup it all back?
Can they afford a $200 price cut? I don't even think a $100 price cut is all that smart.
Sony already lose a fair amount with each console don't they? Against the Wii's small profit and 360's small loss, a price cut may not be all that great for Sony.

I think an increase of 2800% at amazon (of games and accessories) for the ps3 may help with their losses! Also, the more people who invest in the ps3, the more people will start collecting blu-ray films, another boost for sony. The more machines in peoples homes over xmas period will allow them to recoup their losses through game and accessory sales over that period. It's all good.

A 2800% increase depends on what figure Amazon sold in the first place. I mean if they only sold 1 then that's 2800 consoles now.

Not really bro.
They lose money or each console, even if it is sold.
I wouldn't say small profit loss. Microsoft has yet to make a single penny from anything Xbox or Xbox 360. With their new extended warranty, more money goes down the drain. Not that they can't afford it though....
Selling more at a bigger loss isn't the greatest news for Sony if they don't have games to sell. I'm not sure what Sony makes per game sold but they don't have enough good games that will warrant people buying them at $60 a pop. Maybe that will change this Xmas but who knows. If a price drop didn't make a difference I would be VERY surprised as I'm sure Sony would be also.

Did you learn any Maths at school?
If they'd sold 1 before, and now they're selling 2, then that is a 100% increase in sales. Likewise, if now they had sold 3, then that is a 200% increase in sales. (Can you spot the pattern...?)
So if we assue they had only sold 1, and now there has been a 2800% increase in sales, then they have now sold 27.
In laymans terms (as if this wasn't already), for every 1 sold on Amazon before, they are now selling an extra 27. Still a pretty good increase, but nowhere near an increase of 2800 for every one. If ony starting shifting those numbers then both Nintendo and Microsoft would be left dead in the water.
Your on the right track, but I think you'll find that they would be selling 28 extra, or 29 in total.
The key issue though is games (or the lack of). The PS3 is still really expensive, without the killer games to show for it. However, when GTA4, and the next Final Fantasy come out...
