E3: Sony axing 60Gb PS3 in the US after July

US consumers forced into buying new 80Gb model - effectively there's been no price cut
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has confirmed with CVG that the 60Gb PS3 model is being phased out in the States, leaving the new 80Gb model as the only option for punters over the pond.

According to SCEE, the 60Gb model won't be available after July in the US, with reports stating SCEA cut the price to get rid of remaining stock.

SCEA company confirmed on Monday that it was slashing $100 off the price of the 60Gb model to $499, and that the 80Gb model will launch at the start of August at $599 - and come bundled with MotorStorm - the original cost of the 60Gb model.

Effectively then, there's no price cut - just better value for money.

In related news, SCEE has made its expected European PS3 announcement - 425 quid for a starter pack containing 60Gb PS3, two first-party games and two SixAxis controllers. The starter pack hits the UK on July 18.

wtf?! they announce a price cut but then a few days later announce they're not going to even sell the cut model for long?!
ahhhhh i see what they're doing - they're trying to make everyone think 'they've cut the price but it's going soon! better buy a PS3 quick!'
clever, aren't they

If the 80Gb version isn't going to be selling for $100 less as they announced with this new development, then this is simply another lie from Sonys PR machine.
funkyjack on 13 Jul '07
At least they're now screwing with the yanks and being slightly nicer to us with the new starter pack lol. Phew I thought sony just hated Europe. Let the backlash begin/continue...still prob going to get one eventually
runadumb on 13 Jul '07
What a lame-ass thing for Sony to do. Just when you think that Sony is doing something nice, it ends up they're just setting you up for a more of the same s**t. It's like having a girlfriend, but without the sex. So its like being married to Sony. Great.
Brock_Dainjer on 13 Jul '07
You DON'T have to buy 80gb model if you have PS3 already.

It is good for people who are interested in buying PS3 this Xmas or whenever.

$100 for 20 gig, haha. rip off u can put your own harddrive in it

i'm pretty sure it comes with motorstorm in the box too, which is like $60 new over there?
but anyway i've barely filled up half my 60gb drive, so i don't really care. plus i live in the uk, so i really don't care, since it prob won't even come out over here.
Underdose on 13 Jul '07
Just when you think Sony might actually be doing something right this generation...
monkey_puncher on 13 Jul '07
It's funny how the European arm of Sony is confirming that the 60GB in the US is being phased out and it didn't come from Sony's American office themselves
prevhog on 13 Jul '07
Sony what are you playing at, you are not undefeatable, lkook at the sales figures. I remember when it was two models for choice for the consumer, does that mean sony no longer cares about choice, shame as i think they won E3 this year, until this
fracturedglitter on 13 Jul '07
At the end of the day its about choice.
I got the ps3 about a week ago and i dont regret the fact that the new bundle pack is arriving soon as i did a lot a wheeling and dealing to get my machine with 2 pads and resistance for Ł415.00
And i will get motorstorm from ebay for about a tenner
so i have the bundle pack now and i dont have to wait plus i wont feel ripped of.
As far as people thinking Sony was being nice?
No video game company is known for being nice.
Nintendo reselling old hash, microsoft charging an annual fee for xbox live and then charging for a new messenger service. It goes on,there is allways a catch.
You just have to be aware and not bitch about any impact buying you may do.
My advice would be either wait a bit or take the plunge, but know what your getting into. Wink

Why is everyone complaining!? You get an extra 20Gig for the same price! If you've already got a PS3, shut up, it doesn't affect you unless you want two!
AlbertStoots on 13 Jul '07
alright everyone, stop getting your shorts in a bunch. apparently all this is the result of a misinterpretation of statements made by SCEE. the 60 gig PS3 is still priced at $500, and will continue to be sold in the US for the foreseeable future. here's a link:

however, the article ends kinda suspiciously, as if things might change at some point in the DISTANT future.
