It appears that Sony has quite different plans for the PAL market where hard drive size for PS3 is concerned - the company has hinted that a 120GB version could well be in the pipeline.
SCEE president and CEO David Reeves has said the leap of 20GB from 60 to 80GB which has occurred in the US is too small a jump in capacity, but 120GB? Now you're talking...
"The difference between 60 and 80GB is very small, we just feel that going up 20GB is not worth it," Reeves told Norwegian website Dagbladet.
However, "If you go to double it, it's worth it", he added. "So maybe you'll see something a little bit later."
Speaking about the recently announced PS3 Starter Pack for PAL territories and why Sony's chosen to do that, Reeves explained "We believe added value works in the PAL territories".
"We don't think it's necessary to reduce the price", he continued. "We think that consumers want added value in Europe. We think it's the right decision."
The right decision from Sony's point of view maybe, but somehow we feel that European punters would be far happier to see the company cut the price of its console.
I really dont understand Sony's logic. Due to poor sales, they reduce the price in the US and introduce the 'Starter Pack' over here to try and tempt potential buyers. At the same time, they release statements saying that what they are trying to sell us, will be outdated very soon, ie Rumble SixAxis and 120GB HDD.
Everytime I'm almost tempted to get a PS3 (again), another reports hits the web. Personally, I'm now gonna wait for the PS3 'Veteran Pack' which comes with 2 Rumble Sixaxis Pads, 120GB HDD, Motorstorm and Resistance for £349 (I wish)
What are Sony at? Surely one package is enough when you can plug any USB hard drive into the console. Also i think all these different options and rumors of new joypads, packages and hard drives is bound to put people off buying one until everything is all confirmed.
So now they're talkin of a 120 gbHD "Elite" model then. Hmm Copycats. This will come out when? probably at the end of this year. Wht not just release this to begin with Bastards. If anything i can see this leading to a price increase and just bundle a few more things in it as well.
I dont get their logic at all, the left hand has no clue or doesnt care what the right hand does, he's basically saying that the 'upgraded' NTSC version is pretty much pointless after its just been announced and how can he say that his perception is that Pal territories want added value when everywhere around the web i read PS3 threads where people just want it to be cheap enough to afford for your average gamer.
Can anyone tell me what you would need a 120GB PS3 for ?? i dont bother with putting photos or music on my ps3 why the f**k would i ? I have a pc for my photos and a mp3 player for my music. As for videos maybe i would use my PS3 for but it doesnt let me put my downloaded movies which are avi files onto it which is bent!! So i dont know really what its good for other than downloading movie & game trailers from PSN.
Anyone Agree ? If not tell me what all this memory is good for!!

thanks man we dont mind paying more for the machine in the 1st place, but the US can have a price cut when there machine is cheaper in the 1st place? No price cut but the machine still sells poorly?
sorry for the noob question but i havent got a PS3,
does the PS3 have a detatchable hard drive?
Yes it does, you can upgrade the HDD with pretty much any sata hard drives as they just slide right in the drive bay, or you can use usb HDD's I think.
But at the price & sony's continued blundering they are digging their own graves & p**sing off gamers by the truck load in the process.
This is all bulls**t, the west is more becoming like the east everyday videogames wise, videogames consoles should be just that...they play videogames, we have otherstuff to do the jobs we need, its not like we have to pay £400 for a dvd player that can comes with a joypad and plays a few games and comes with a coffee maker on the side...we dont want the crap we dont need, this industry is the ONLY industry that makes you pay for stuff we dont actually need or want...its very annoying. And i say we are becoming more like the east because if anyone remembers the PC Engine and othe jap consoles that had loads of addons that confused consumers...that is what is happening with the xbox and playstation...3 diff sku's for the 360 and maybe 3 for the PS3....we just want to play games for god's sake! little johnny and uncle bob havent got a clue when they go and buy a games machine, same console different price hmmm.. oh whats that over there one console with one price i'll buy it...thats why the wii is selling so much its not confusing the consumer! Bring back the good old days of playing games and not worrying if it has enough hd space or memory...

Ive said the same a few times myself, consoles should be simple, switch on and game in a few seconds when you come back to the gaff with a few mates.
Apart from gaming, a console shouldnt do anything else a PC does, it should only play games on and offline. Most people have a PC for the rest and most have a DVD player for watching movies, if they have a HD telly then more than likely they have already considered getting/or already have HD player be it blu ray or HD-DVD. The console players are always lesser versions of decent players anyway and the PS2's DVD playback is a great example of that
Consoles = Gaming only PC = A Bit of everything, and the way it has always been Regular DVD/HDDVD/BluRay player - leave it to the specialised players
Who wants all the complications of patches now for consoles, different hard drive sizes, loads of different SKU's, features you dont want, more complex menus, all this watching trailers( i have a PC for that if its no already on Sky or whatever, its not like the whole family want to see the new Transformers trailer )
