While a two-player co-op mode has been confirmed for Halo 3 (player two assumes the role of the Arbiter) it looks like it'll be available in LAN or split-screen only as Bungie struggles to get the mode running over Xbox Live.
In the latest issues of EGM, it's reported that online co-op isn't happening, yet. "We're not dumb," says Bungie's Frank O'Connor. "We know that people want it and we're trying to make it happen. I think the biggest problem for us for online co-op is that we have a situation where you can be in a Warthog with five troops, almost a mile away from the other player. That's a significant challenge. And there's lots of design things you could do to prevent that from happening, but they would make it not feel like Halo anymore. If we can make it happen in a way that works well, we will - and if it works badly, we won't."
Bungie didn't rule out that online co-op could become a possibility via downloadable content post release. Looks like those rumours of four-player Live co-op have gone forever.
The same issue of EGM also revealed tons of new info on vehicles, equipment and weapons previously kept under wraps. New gear includes the Flare (a flashbang) a dual wieldable Brute shotgun dubbed the Mauler, a Gravity Hammer (send vehicles flying, apparently) and a Regenerator (opposite of the power drainer). New Vehicles to look out for include the Prowler, Hornet and Elephant, described as a Jawa Sandcrawler. A remake of multiplayer map Lockout was also revealed called Guardian.
The mag also hints that Marathon will be on Xbox Live Arcade by the time the mag goes on sale, which is August 11.
This will be a big dissapointment if they don't have some sort of online Co-op.
It will be right up there with the time myself and a mate got our two Xbox's, two copies of Halo:CE, two TV's and a link cable...sat down to play some full screen Co-op only to discover it was splitscreen only!!
I even have him thinking about getting a 360 and Halo 3 just for the Live Co-op mode.
Aw come on, how hard can it be to develop online co-op? Plenty of other games have it even if its simplified (I.E Rainbow six vegas etc). Come on Bungie sort it out!
why dont they do something where theres a certain limit on how far each player could be away from each other, and theyd get teleported back to the leader. a 2-3mile limit might help and most wouldnt even need this.
its better than nothing at all im sure
also, sounds like chief and arbiter may be joined at the hip in single player, if theres the co-op option that fits into the story
This is extremely bad news. The biggest game for 360 to date and no online co-op!? Bungie must have noticed how popular it was in the likes of Gears Of War, Crackdown etc. They NEED this mode!!!
It would be bitter disapointment but still I cant see anybody not buying halo 3 because it dosnt support online co-op, and as for peoples remarks like Rainbow six has got co-op? well Rainbow six dosnt have miles and miles of out door and indoor landscapes, nor does it have warthogs, scorpion tanks and various other kickbottom equipment, dont get me wrong Rainbow rocks but you cant compare the two.

I didn't say you could compare the 2 but seeing as you can have 2 or 3 in a warthog in team slayer etc why not in online co-op and as already pointed out here Crackdown has a large expanse and handles co-op very well.
Well you're not co-operating very well in the first place if you are 3 miles apart are you? Come on Bungie, still waiting for you to do something that actually makes Halo 3 worth buying.
I interpret what Bungie say as meaning it would take a lot of computing power to be running a massive level with 2 players on opposite sides of it. I dont know much about programming but Im guessing Bungie are good at what they do, so it must be a technical issues.
My solution is instead of creating the same levels for co-op, how about creating new smaller co-op specific levels? PROBLEM SOLVED!
this way you get co-op and more value from the game.
Dear God can Halo3 get any less exciting! Honestly this game was top of my list of games to get when I initially bought my 360, but the truth is it's very quickly falling from grace! How many people thought "oh my god" when they saw the trailer last year with the two kids starring up at the stars and the excellent looking battle. It looked gritty, it was what I wanted Halo's successor to look like! But it was CGI and as always it was too good to be true. When the Beta code was released I was not overly awed but at the end of the day it was just the beta build and gameplay was still solid if a little over familiar.
The E3 showing was what really put me on a downer though! The game looks very similar to the Beta build and not a whole lot improved over the original Halo2 engine. It wasn't so long ago that Mr Moore was saying that this would be the best looking game on the system, better he claimed than the mighty Gears of War! Well I beg to differ!
The online co-op was the one thing that all fans of the Halo series has really wanted from Bungie. Please say that they sort it out because Halo3 is becoming a massive disappointment! I know the game isn't out yet and there is a possibility that Bungie will still pull a rabbit out of their hat but the signs are ominous! Bioshock, Mass Effect, CoD4 and Half Life are all looking GOOD and there's a possibility that Halo3 won't be THE killer app this xmas.

True but again on the tech side crackdown wasnt story driven, for example with halo you can be sure when you hit a certain area a cut scene may kick in, or a certain trigger which would enable advanced AI to do there bit, the thing with past halo games they have all been prasied how advanced tha AI actualy is, in fact the AI on the first Halo is still miles ahead of some of the shameful games you see today, this will certainly create limitations on how far player 1 can procede to player 2, imagine your player 2 engaged in a battle far behind, then player 1 reachs a certain area or trigger, either you would miss a dramtic event or mid battle you will find your self with an unxplained cut scene, things could get messy, this would be a programmers nightmare. either way I hope they can sort it out, you never know me and you might be fighting along side each other in the near distant future rather then bickering about geeky stuff eh? lol
People chill, honestly if it was such an east task, I'm pretty sure Bungie would have no problems putting it in. Theres a hell of a lot of data being sent between 2 consoles for Co op, when Bungie get it working, it'll be good.
Little Kid:"I want a burger please" Bungie The Burger guy:"Sure kid, here" Kid: "AAAAAHHH, i want pickle in my burger!" Bungie:"Our pickles arent ready yet, just give it a while until they are good enough to eat" Kid: "No dammit, I want my PICKLE!" *Bungie Gives Pickle after much complaining to shut whiners up and give in to pressure* Kid: "Ergh this burger tastes crap with this crappy pickle. I dont want crappy pickle =[ Take it back!"
Bungie aren't retards, in case you aren't aware (and of course you are) they made Halo 1+2. If anyone knows about Halo its them, and they know the most about what people want and what needs improving, these guys are experts and if they say its gonna be hard then its gonna be hard. I know it would of been nice but who honestly cares about the story THAT much now anyway? i mean sure, i wanna know what happens but not as much as i wanna lazrpwn americans online
This ain't no burger geez! This is a game that has been in development for a bloody long time and Bungie has known since the release of Halo2 that co-op was a big thing! Missing out the online co-op will be a real blow! If you look at Gears of War the co-op was fantastic and added tons of replay value to the campaign. The technical issue is obviously a problem but Bungie should have really made this a priority.
The fact is now that an AAA title such as Gears Of War managed to have online co-op, everyones going to expect it from the next killer game, which happens to be Halo 3. Also, I know alot of people that didn't bother playing Halo 2's campaign more than once. Online co-op would keep Halo 3 running for ages and was really looking forward to experiencing Halo 3's story with my friends. Now that bubble has been burst and all I have left is competitive online multi-player with 12yr old americans kids using every offensive word they know on unsuspecting victims...
Its important to remember here that Gears of War was also a very linear game. Some of Halo's levels look quite large, and if one player can be miles from the other, this would certainly support that idea. However, having said that, they have had years to get this sorted, and if they're only working on it now that is inexcusably poor.
Meh. They can add it a few weeks after launch as a downloadable update. If you were going to be able play it co-op over Live then you'd be able to download a patch to get that happening with no problems. Wheras the people without Live wouldn't necessarily, I know quite a few people who haven't bothered with the service here because it's pretty crap unless you live in the US or UK.
Online co-op was the only thing that would have ever made me even consider buying Halo 3, I guess this settles that then and I'll be giving the game a wide birth.
I'll need all the time I can get anyway for GTA, Bioshock etc etc
A patch downloadable over live would be fine, as long as it was out within a few weeks, and free. However, with how high the demand would be for it, Microsoft would almost certainly charge 400 points or thereabouts for it. And as good as online co-op would be, honestly, how many people would rather play that than play online matches? Co-op would be something you do once or twice, but multiplayer online, judging by Halo 2, alot more. A few weeks after its released people wont even realise its missing.
Ok people first and for most. In my opinion this is how i think it is. To answer some of the comments/questions/statements. As for the who in game(online) story mode i highly doubt there will be cut scenes first because it just cant happen as one of you had stated that it will be to messy, you are right so thats why they wouldn't do that. The whole co-op story online can be done its just they have put so much time into muti-player that they are running short on time to perfect there story mode. Because of the fact if all of you watched e3 (Microsoft conference) it is coming out September the 25th giving us what 2 months and they are still having problems with the muti-player and a few of the bugs that they have encountered. Whoever said that it doesnt matter if the story is online or not...that is pretty sad though everyone has there own opinions. Halo its self was made for its story mode and enchanting feeling. If you dont understand what i mean play halo 1 then jump to halo 2 it is way different because they focused way to much on the muti-player part of the game which is great but the story is what made the game such a success both in game and the novels. Most likely as the artical states it will either work or it won't. That will cause a big problem for the game because they will go out as one of the most greatest events in media history as one of the must let down games. We expected a online story mode,we expected a map editor,we excepted a mode with AI to fight against(non story mode), but days, weeks, months, and a whole year of let downs is causing halo 3 to become nothing but a big stinker...(what i could be saying can be wrong but it is an opinion just like all of us,right. Sorry for a few miss spells)
