Mystery Smash Bros. mode revealed

Evil appears in new screens of a strange trophy-fighting mode...
Super Smash Bros. Brawl has plenty of surprises in store it seems, and this is one of them: a new mystery gameplay mode that appears to allow you to fight with trophies.

Fans of the previous game will remember the several dozens of trophies that were awarded for completing certain tasks in the game. But in Melee, they were nothing more than ornamental collectibles.

Game creator, Masahiro Sakurai, only partly explains what happens in the new mode, which he files under '???' on the official site. "In this world, trophies fight," he says. "Those are the rules of this world. But... when someone... or something... breaks those rules, the world will pay a terrible price..."

Whatever he means, this mode promises to be something special because the principle of Smash Bros. is that you smash opponents off the stage - where they fall to their death - but the stadium pictured below has no edges, and so nowhere to fall. Interesting...

Isn't this just the intro of the game and the 'characters being trophies' is basically the background of the whole franchise...didn't the melee intro have them depicted as trophies?

If trophies were playable then i'd love to just play as links ocarina and annoy (pleasure) people with the songs ^^.

CVG I think you've missed a target a bit.
To me, it appears that the update is explaining the story of the game, where the characters are all trophies, designed for fight, and that guy at the end might be the new Master Hand? Who is trying to corruped the Smash world?
And isn't he on Metaknights ship on the E3 trailer? :S
Just what it looked like to me.

Yes this just seems like the introduction of the story mode part of the game, not some new mode where you can play with the hundreds of trophies you get in Smash Bros. That would be great but it's not going to happen.

I agree it looks like any intro sequence but the thing that makes this interesting is it's listed under "Game Modes" on supersmash.com. So perhaps it is a whole new game mode. We'll just have to wait for details. I hate waiting...

It sounds like the Pokeball battles you had in Super Smash Bros. Melee, except a rule is that the players can't attack each other directly. They probably do battle by scrambling to pick up trophies, which will in turn attack their opponents.

That's what caught me, but then again... Story Mode?
Classic, Adventure, All-Star, and now maybe Brawl mode or something xD
I don't know, pretty irritated that this game isn't going to be here for bloody ages.
But looks great eh.

Maybe this is a new turn-based fighting mode. A levelling up element could be being introduced.
