Wii surprise coming "by September," says Fils-Aime

Check Mii Out Channel and more coming soon for Wii owners
If you have your Wii set in WiiConnect24 mode you will be waking up to your Wii's glowing disc tray alerting you to some cool surprises in the next two months, according to teasing statements from Nintendo America honcho, Reggie Fils-Aime.

WiiConnect24 has had minimal use since the console's launch in the last year, but Reggie has said the surprises Nintendo promised at last year's E3 are "still coming".

"We announced at E3 [this year] a new channel: the Check Mii Out Channel. And we still have plans...", teased Fils-Aime.

"The surprise is coming... by the end of September," he goes on to reveal. "I think you'll like this surprise," he told GameHead.

What does he mean by suprise exactly? We've known about the channel for some time. Is there some functionality in it we don't yet know about?
andrewizbatman on 24 Jul '07
Cool - a shopping channel overhaul would be nice, decent game matching service or a friends/chat channel. A huge update to the Mii channel allowing some Mii's to actually look remotely like who they are meant to be??! (a lack of curly hair in breadcrust britain? - come on)

Must be a decent surprise though, they didn't even announce the arrival of the voting channel.
kricca on 24 Jul '07
GoldenEye.... didnt you see the pictures of the Wii Zapper hinted at the 007 sign at the start of that game?

I think the deal they have struck with RARE and the film licenser is allowing them to use the Wii Zapper in GoldenEye.

Or I could be out of my mind.
Munkoloid on 24 Jul '07
I heard it was gonna be the "Mii love you long time" channel
monkey_puncher on 24 Jul '07
The biggest surprise they could possibly announce would be a decent original game this year.

The updated higher quality Mii's were mentioned ages ago, so could it be that? Are we going to have decent looking Miis running around between consoles?

Or Nintendo could be getting one back on Sony (the motion sensing steal) by introducing MiiHome where you can customise where your Miis live. That would be interesting Smile
Dajmin on 24 Jul '07
Don't really care about the show you mii channel, i think i have used the original Mii channel about 4 times.

Something simple like a friends channel would be nice. Showing your friends, what games they're playing, if they're online, maybe a gamerpoints type thing?

**Edit**

It could Stars channel. Spend your Nintendo Star points, that way keeping it completely seperate and not allowing a straight transfer to wii points.
maugrim2712 on 24 Jul '07
golden eye would be class
i'm getting a wii next month i've been mulling it over for a while but think i'm goin to take the plunge
toppin101 on 24 Jul '07
Oh a surprise; It must be a new game, no i'm being silly and optomistic there, it must be a 'new' old game with supposedly 'improved' controls.
I wish they'd stop f**king about with mii crap and start making games
topguy4 on 24 Jul '07
A whole new Pilot Wings game would be a nice surprise.

Maybe he'll be uploading a Mii of himself. Imagine waking up to find Reggwii jumping up and down on your TV screen. Shocked

Well since he's refering to the Mii channel, he could be talking about (according to what he mentioned at the e3 conference) a new Mii feature where you can submit your created Miis to be rated by other Wii owners. The winner will win cash or Wii points or something. If that is the "surprise", its not a very exciting one... Confused... considering he hinted about it several times already.
MarcuFenix on 24 Jul '07
Well two things came to mind when I read this article:

1. With WiiConnect24 enabled and without turning your Wii off properly, it's more likely that you'll turn the console on one day in September to find it doesn't actually work anymore as reported earlier on this week... on this site I believe. Wink

2. Far less negative and more of a personal wish of mine is having the Wii finally support 720p resolutions, perhaps even upscale existing games to that resolution like the PS3 does for PS2 and PSone games. I mean the five year old Xbox was perfectly capable of running games at 720p so why not the Wii? Well a man can dream, can't he?

I think he means Wiiware or Demo channel

Doubt it'll be a demo channel, being that 95% of all Wii games are chud. I've got 8 or 9 games, and I can't say I've played any (except Twilight Princess) for more than two hours.
DeejUK on 24 Jul '07
I think Reggie is talking about the original idea of "waking up to a new surprise everyday" that was mentioned last year. What that could be though I have no idea.

Personally I'd love for the Mii Channel to be overhauled. Loads more customisation would be welcome, and I sure hope that they get rid of some of those retarded eyes and alien mouths!

We already know that the Photo Channel has a update in the works, which it badly needs, because it's terribly basic. Support for a wider variety of file types would be nice too.

I think the News Channel needs sorting out because it's so damn boring and plain. I know news isn't exactly exciting, but there's hardly ever pictures to go with the article. Video support would be nice too.

The Weather Channel is cool but I don't feel it's all that accurate. The Internet Channel is great (I'm using it to post this comment), but I'd like to see some more plug-ins than just Flash, as a handful of sites don't work. The Everybody Votes Channel ia pretty cool too, I still hate the name though!

A downloadable demo from the choice of Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 or Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

PLEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Or maybe more realistically some form of chat channel where you can check up on what your friends are playing and talk, Xfire style.
RumbleThunder on 24 Jul '07
the best anouncement would be the uk release date for metroid prime 3,we hav to wait till christmas for the big ones, come on who would prefer new channels to prime 3,or super smash bros brawl, super mario galaxy,we need more decent games,no more ps2 ports thanks,im going off the point now i know, all im saying is dat we hav to wait till christmas to get our hands on decent games, and all were gettin is sum channel dat will prop just ware off like everybody votes channel wen they could give us wat we want a decent game.
