Epic explains why PC Gears content on 360 is "unlikely"

"It's very unlikely because the two code bases aren't compatible", Mark Rein tells CVG
Epic's Mark Rein has said it's "very unlikely" that the content the developer is creating exclusively for Gears of War on PC will ever be released for the original Xbox 360 version of the game.

"It's very unlikely because the two code bases aren't compatible", Rein explained to CVG when we caught up with him earlier this week.

"To do that, we would have to patch the 360 version and the size of the patch would probably dwarf all five updates we've done so far. It's just too much work. I can't see it happening."

"It's not impossible," he added, "it's just unlikely."

Rein said that Epic's well aware that Xbox 360 gamers aren't happy about the situation "because they will devour any content we have".

"It's just a very, very hard job to do that and I don't think we'll be doing that".

Epic is creating three new multiplayer maps, a new multiplayer game type and five new campaign chapters for Gears of War on PC.

We asked Rein whether Xbox 360 gamers can expect any new download content for Gears of War in the near future.

"I don't know, we don't plan it that far, right?" he replied.

"Right now, the team's busy with the Windows version, so when they've finished that then maybe we'll go back and see if there's more stuff we can do on the 360".

i read this yesterday, its a different version of the Unreal Engine theyre using for the PC with a lot more optimizations etc. Im looking forward to this on the PC, besides most games when moving to another platform have a few extras over the original version so its not really a shock or anything
lmimmfn on 27 Jul '07
So what if the update is bigger? It's better than paying another Ł30 for a new game with a few new features!

As a huge G.O.W. fan I feel a bit cheated, after all it was the 360 version and all the money made on it that thats given them the drive to do a PC version in the first place, its a bit like saying "thanks for buying our game 360 owners.....now sod off we're far to busy making a better version of your game suckers"

Actually it's Microsoft and Vista that caused this to happen with the whole new gaming for Windows movement to get people to switch to Vista. It's difficult finding an XP laptop these days.

There should be some extra content for 360 owners though made at some point. Confused

If it had come out on PC first it would have been just as successful and would end up with a newer version on xbox 360, and us PC owners wouldnt be complaining, because its been the same way with games for the past 10 years

My bottom it would have been just as successful. It wouldn't have sold anywhere near as many copies as it has on 360... Rolling Eyes
To be quite honest though, yes it is MS fault. They waant to push the Games for Windows and Vista platform and are using 360 ports to do so.

You must have some ass, oh yeah, HL2 sold 4 million on the PC, GoW sold 2 million on xbox, therefor with your crystal ball ass youre correct? Rolling Eyes

Oh let me guess, you own an xbox 360 only, were so lucky the world revolves around it solely Rolling Eyes

Its nobodys fault its simple logic, ports are cheaper and they'll generate a lot of revenue on sales for little cost, allowing them to add extra stuff without affecting profits much.
Also by adding extra stuff on the PC they'll try and target the 360 owners who already have the game but also have a PC

I suppose being a gamer (and not an MS fanboy)and a huge GOW fan I am (think I may have said that already) the smart move for me would to invest in a PC, problem is ive been a console boy since the sega master system came out many moons ago, I wouldnt no where to start with a PC and with people telling me I would have to shell out at least a grand if I wanted to play the mighty up and coming Crysis (which looks the freckin nuts). you seem to no your shinola so is it true? if I wanted to convert to the world of the PC, quickly, with no hasstle, how much am I looking at to run GOW or Crysis.

Im sure the extra content wont amount to much in the grand scheme of things, it usually doesnt, besides you guys will be getting the sequel well before the PC, and also you guys are getting the extra GTA 4 content Smile

Well ive had both PC's and consoles for the past 20 years and i like both for their strengths and weaknesses. If i were you i would only invest in a PC if you think it would be usefull for other things like downloading movies, converting them to DVD, writing up CV's, the usual stuff a PC is used for as well as for gaming and if you like the games that come out on a PC. A PC is really for more than just gaming and that is one of its strengths whereas console gaming is nice to just stick something on and play in a few seconds
Im a huge battlefield 2 fan but a game like that doesnt really work on the console, joypad controle/usually with consoles your sitting a bit away from the tv slowing your reactions slightly and a few other things, i prefer games like that on the PC and more arcadey games on my console

I 110% disagree with the previous post on the crysis requirements, its is way to early to tell, what has been said by Crytek is that it should run on ultra quality with an E6600, 2gig ram and an 8800GTS, a system like that without screen would cost around 1000euro to build. However when it was shown at E3 it was running on an 8800GTX and only at a resolution of 1024 x 768 and in some places dropped to 20FPS, but they said that it needed a lot more optimisation.

The new nvidia cards will be out in november, they should be 2-3 times more powerful than the current fastest consumer gfx card on the market the 8800GTX, but it will expensive however there will be cheaper versions. I use my PC for software development, so i need a beefy enough PC and for gaming i just need to get a new gfx card as my current one is 18months old. Ill pick up a 9800 in november

So again youre talking about Ł700-Ł800 without screen to buy a PC that will play crysis, but at what resolution is unknown as its too early and you shouldnt buy a PC for just one game. Im sure it will be out on the consoles in a year or two, but i doubt it will be produced by Crytek and could be a ba$tardisation similar to what Ubisoft did with Far Cry

you dont need a quad core for crysis the recommended is dual and min is 2.8 ghz and only 1gb ram

Please refrain from posting such utter balls there is no game that REQUIRES such specs Rolling Eyes . It's annoying reading things like that when the poster is admitting "they dont know" themselves.

I heard from interviews with the Crytek team an E6600 processor and 2 gig ram will do you nicely. It's up to you when it comes to graphics front though - If your happy with DX9 then a nvidia 7 series card (or ATI equal) with enough ram on it will do you dandy.

You want it to look how it does in the promo vids then dont go for anything less then an nvidia 8800GTS (or again ATI rival).

I don't know what world you live in but PC gaming is no where near as mainstream as console gaming.
Not as expensive!? Dude, WTF!?
To get GOW on PC to look anywhere like it does on 360 your going to need an Ł800+ PC... Confused

And yes, it is MS's fault regarding this situation. They want Vista and the Games for Windows platforms to do well. To do that they need multiple quality games, somethng PC only manages to produce a couple of times per year. To help stop the PC gaming decline MS will simply port over their biggest 360 exlcuisve games over to PC a year or so later...
I don't know about you but I would rather have a variety of quality original games to play such as Crysis rather than ports of games I was finished with over a year ago.

To upgrade a PC to have better gfx than the 360 costs 250euro card. WHY do people insist on comparing pricing models when its like comparing apples and oranges, again A CONSOLE IS SOLD BELOW COST AND THE PRICE OF CONSOLE GAMES IS HIGHER TO PAY FOR THE HARDWARE, jez, and most houses already have a PC anyway

Ooo weee I just love a mass debate dont you? cheers for the info lmimmfn, you are by far the most senisble person I have encountered, instead of the usal ranting and raving blah blah you should do this blah blah fanboy this fanboy that, you have pretty much sold it to me, my eyes have been opened in the PC world and there is plenty of things I could do with one (not just play crysis) although I did once buy a game cube just to play resident evil 4.

lol, cheers dude, well its always the same @ the C&VG forums and i doubt it will ever change, but it keeps it interesting Smile
I just buy whichever console has the games i wanna play( i dont give a crap n regards loyalty to any console ), i happen to need a PC and i just throw in a new gfx card every 18months and sell my previous one, maybe upgrade the mobo, cpu and ram every 3 years and sell the old stuff, its a little hassle selling old stuff on but not too bad

If youre interested in a PC ill give you a few tips:
1.Build your own( it works out about half the price )
2.Build your own, lol, for advice post on the forums on guru3d - http://www.guru3d.com there are lots of good guys there will be more than happy to give you advice about components etc. The experience is also great and theres a hell of a lot of satisfaction building your own.
3. Buy a decent power supply and case. If you buy the right ones and good ones, your case and PSU( id suggest a 700W PSU thats NVidia certified ) can last you over several PC builds, your old components you can throw into a cheap case and power supply to sell on
4. Currently the P35 is the best motherboard and a quadcore Q6600 has dropped in price last week to 250euro
5. spend a little extra and build a rig that will overclock, you get a lot of satisfaction making your PC 50-100% faster, also it will mean your rig will last longer before needing an upgrade
6. Wait until at least October to build, by that time the new NVidia cards( twice as powerful as the latest ones ) should be out or at least the release date will be confirmed. Also Crysis,Bioshock,HL2 Episode 2, Frontlines: Fuel of War, Hellgate London will be out and GoW and UT3 will be just around the corner
7. PC gaming isint as expensive as everyone makes out, i built a rig last year for 800euro( 2 gig ram, dual core etc. ), sold it 3 months ago for 700euro and build a new one with 4 gig ram, 1 terrabyte of storage, core 2 processor, and a top end mobo for 1000euro( i effectively went from a medium end PC to a high end one for 400euro and did it because i could sell my old one easily and also just for the laugh, lol ). The most expensive is the GPU and ill get one for 400euro in november to have everything high end( and sell my current GPU for 100euro ), ill probably not upgrade again for 18months. I spec'd my current rig on alienware for 4000euro lol
8. If you like arcade games, download MAME and play the original coin ops, great fun and im still firing up DragonNinja, Final Fight, Streetfighter 2 and a load of others( theres a few thousand coin ops emulated ). Also try out the emutand games for the old systems you have, great for nostalgia

Gamecube for just one game? FTW lol, although i played a few times on a GC and thought it was a great system, but yeah, Resident Evil 4 is a classic. I was considering getting one just to be able to play MGS Twin Snakes, grr, love the original MGS and still have it lol. Im waiting or the GC emulators to advance a bit so i can play it on my PC( might still have to wait a few years though lol )

Jez that was a long post lol
lmimmfn on 28 Jul '07
If you compare high street pricing (UK anyway) PC gaming is iether impossible or hugely expensive...the high street isnt the place to get a PC. Get on line to komplet or ebuyer and you see PC gaming doesnt cost an arm and a leg. But I have to say in pure gaming terms the 360 is amazing value.

I cant fathom why some 360 owners will feel cheated that 'their' game is going to PC with different content...er...grow up ! its not your game, You still have the same GOW you allways had... it happens.

Really looking forward to GOW on my PC.

(All I crave from consoles now are some of my old faves from xbox original ported to PC...It'll never happen though- Gltch in the system... I miss you !) Sad

Wise move - Xbox 360 HD is too small for further big updates.
wildhook2 on 28 Jul '07
If you are looking into getting into PC gaming you should probably just start off with a mainstream spec PC. Most people who are already into PC gaming will already have a rig that can be upgraded. Personally I am going to spend about Ł1500 - Ł2000 on a new PC when Crysis comes out. This doesn't bother me because I use my PC heavily day to day anyway, with my Graphic Design work, so it will also help Photoshop and Illustrator and creating PDFs at super quick speed. I also have a 360, but I just get games depending on exclusives and controls. People shouldn't bicker about a format that they don't even use. PCs are alot more expensive but they arent made just for gaming like a consoles are.
Typheous on 28 Jul '07
No worries EPIC move on & start making GOW2 for the 360!!!!!!!!!!!!!...
cheers. Cool

Why are people here complaining that a 360 game will appear on PC with some enhancements?

Let's not forget the other games that appeared on PC and then made its way over to your cherished console..with extra maps and enhancements etc.

The PC is a testing ground and always has been, without the PC you would probably never see half the games available on consoles today.

Be thankful you can pay a third of the price for an Xbox/360 console and have half the eye-candy of a good PC. Sounds like a good deal to me.
Paradaz - UK on 30 Jul '07
I don't see what all the fuss is about to be honest. A couple of months ago there were quotes coming out of Mr Rein (or maybe CliffyB) saying that rumours of GoW coming out on PC were bullsh*t. Now look what happens. It's coming out on PC.

It happens all the time - and not just with epic.

So there's still a good chance that in a couple of months, we'll get the huge fanfare and shock announcement that the extra bits are coming to the 360.

And if they don't? Move on...
