Microsoft selected this year's E3 to give Halo fans their first real glimpse of Halo 3's single-player campaign, but Epic boss Mark Rein reckons that worked against the company and the sequel at the show.
"I think that [showing the single-player campaign] hurt Halo 3 at E3", Rein told us when we caught up with him for a chat this week. "Halo 3 didn't win any game of the show awards that I could see. Well, because they didn't have to show Halo. There was no need".
"I'm sure if they'd actually had a big Halo 3 presence, if Microsoft had set up eight machines or 12 or 16 machines so you could sit and play it, it would have won all kinds of awards. But they don't need to because, like me, everyone's already placed their order... So I think that worked against them at E3," the Epic boss added.
However, causing us to scratch heads a bit, he also described Halo 3's limited presence at the show as a "smart move" from Microsoft.
"What they wanted to do was highlight all the other great games... that are on Xbox 360 too so people don't just think it's a Halo box. They don't care, they're going to sell eight million of them anyway", Rein said.
And how much is Mark Rein looking forward to Halo 3? "I ordered the Legendary edition... I'm buying it - you don't have to sell me any more on Halo".
Firstly, the timed exclusive of UT3 on PS3...I understand the reasons behind it, I have a PS3 but I think this will be better on 360 for me as I prefer the controller and online service. I am looking forward to it and now I will have to fight temptaion to get it for the PS3. Its like VF5 all over again!
Secondly, The extra content for PC Gears of War "Probably" not coming to 360...not too bothered about the multiplayer maps, although they would be nice. Its the single player stuff that I want, I mean Gears isn't eactly a long game and some extra chapters would go down a treat.
And now what seems like a pointless Halo 3 comment to me. I mean if they didn't show single player they would have had all sorts of backlash, speculation about it not being ready etc.. And to be honest I think it looks really good. I think they showed just enough to keep everyone happy. I don't get where this guy is coming from!

He's not really complaining, he's just saying he'd have handled it's presentation better. It's no discrepancy with the game itself. I think given his position he's entitled to comment.
I pretty much agree with the guy. MS didn't need to show Halo 3 as no one needs to be convinced to buy the game. Like he said, everyone that wants it will already have it pre-ordered or be ready to buy it when its released. What he's saying is that if MS really wanted to show Halo 3, they could have just made a huge deal out of it rather than showing us a rather unimpressive trailer right at the end of their conferenece...
I think MS did the right thing though. They need to show the uninformed fanboys that 360 is not just all about Halo 3. The truth is that is has by far the best games line-up this fall and hopefully everyone has taken note of that.
They had to give us some footage of the single player since half of the halo lovers will have already had a taster of the multiplayer looked and played thanks to the beta. I think I read that there was meant to be a playable version ready for E3 but they couldn't manage it so we ended up wuth a pretty poor showing on the halo front.
MS got it right by not showing halo 3 at e3 to the masses, after all, it was the mega hype that ruined halo 2 single player game, people expected it to be the second coming (it wasnt, just a very good shooter, well done) afterall if halo 3 has the hype of halo 2 and it turns out not to be out of this world good, then halo franchise might die.
(just look at hype for films, are they ever as good as it makes out to be?)
i have no doubt when halo 3 comes, it will be an excellent well rounded game, with great gamplay and graphics, it how ever wont have the same impact as the orginal one did, just like half life 2 didnt have the same effect as the orginal or in the film world t2 wasnt as good as terminator.
People have to learn, its not the game that is bad, its the months of hype, that surrounds like a crap infest swamp, that leaves the bad smell and taste in your mouth, that makes people go, errrrrrr was that it then???

Your thinking of T3 compared to T2 but it doesnt suit ur Halo speech cos 1 is better than 2 & cannt comment on halo 3 yet but u are right about the PR overlaod s**t! Oh, and the fact he prefers T1 to T2 is purely subjective.......even if it's a strange way to illustrate a point
Was actually Edward Furlong...but the point still stands T2 is widely regarded as one of the best films ever made.
On topic, I don't know what to make of Halo 3 so far...I play FPS games more than any other type so maybe my view has been diluted by experience with such a large diverse genre. To me, Halo 3 single player looks average, Halo was a welcome change to open ground combat in a national park-esque environment. What is there to look forward to? multiplayer?...please, I would rather still play the original (and greatest) Unreal Tourney.
I don't know why people complain about Halo 3 being the same as the two previous games. Off course it will be similar in look and music and gameplay style.
It would be stupid if it wasn't, all the Fifa and Pro Evo games are similar, just more details and better graphics everytime.
Same for all the Metal Gear Solids, similar feel and games play style.
Halo 3 will be similar in feel and game play and music but the graphics are much better and a lot more new features in the game Im confident it will be a very good game.
I do agree with Mark on this one, I'm still not convinced about Halo 3, & the running game play did nothing to help that. It seem like the gaming world has moved on from Halo & Bungie hasn't really looked @ what's being made around them?. I know they like to keep artistic integrity & all that but I still think Halo 3 looks very garish in its colour palette which makes the models look naff, not that I think Bungie have the worlds greatest modelers to start with. But having said that I really enjoy Halo & hope it p**ses all over what I've just said, but from what I've seen & after playing the online beta.....I'm not convinced....sorry...
p.s. Bungie, if there is a god.. make Halo 3 awesome... i couldn;t stand the smug posts from PS3 fanboys...
