Activision has crushed the hopes of UK and European gamers hoping to get in on the multiplayer beta for Infinity Ward's impressive FPS Call of Duty 4 on Xbox 360.
The publisher has confirmed with CVG this morning that the beta test WILL BE for US residents only.
We're currently in the dark as to why this is the case. The Activision spokesperson we contacted was unable to elaborate. However, we ARE expecting an official line later today.
It's news that will gut FPS fans on these shores, especially with Call of Duty 4 looking so very great and clearly one of this Christmas' hottest games. A pre-release sample denied in favour of the US? We're angry AND disappointed.
Bungie and Microsoft gave us beta access to Halo 3, so why not Activision and Infinity Ward with CoD 4?
The Call of Duty 4 multiplayer beta is scheduled to kick off this month, with participants - which won't be us - helping to optimise what Activision and Infinity Ward "hope is the best multiplayer experience of the year".
Good luck with that one, going up against Halo 3...
Multiplayer beta tests for console shooters are on the increase, and Sony's been quick to join Microsoft in the testing park.
PS3 game WarHawk has had a multiplayer beta, and we'd fully expect Sony to do the same with its PS3 flagship FPS Killzone 2. And you can bet we'll be given the chance to get in on that.
just this week its been America,America,America on the marketplace.....that comic book convention stuff, the national geographic items and now today with the fatal inertia demo....all for US only(and the demo is Japan as well, but thats not the point!!)
ive got a u.s.a activated account which ive used to download demos that we dont have on our marketplace and theres even a free arcade game called aegis, so im wondering if it would work with cod4
So how long is it going to be till they come out with a statement along the lines of " We apologise for building up the hopes of the Xbox 360 owners who will miss out on this Beta and we appreciate the disapointment this has caused but this is only a free Beta which we never intended to be a worldwide event. If you do wish to enter the Beta tho you can through purchasing a copy of "
Sigh... I was hoping they'd beta this on PC as well but it doesn't look like it was going to happen. My old CoD/CoD2 clan is in the process of reassembling at the moment for this and I was hoping for more practise!
Admittedly it is only a beta, so not that bothered. However considering how bad COD2 online was when it was released, and how COD3 was and still can be at times. COD4 will be exacly the same. So you would have thought that it would be in their best interest to open it up for Europe, but they don't really care about us anyway, so the final release will still have the same connection and lag problems. I want the game, I just know that the online experience will disappoint me for the third time on the 360!
Jesus... They get everyones hopes up by announcing a 360 exclusive BETA at E3 and now they decide its for the US only. Oh well, I guess Halo 3 will be the game for online thrills and COD4 will just have to take the back seat and be a single player only game for me.
Infinity Ward totally misled UK & EU gamers when announcing the Beta. Telling EVERYONE to sign up to their site. They built our hopes up then stamped on them. Yes I feel betrayed.

Hell, you think it's bad U.S. residents have it all made? f**k, PC owners don't get s**t.
Here's some s**t console that's made out to be next gen, and it gets all the crap attention because people fall for ads of it on TV, and a franchise that started out on the PC doesn't recognize it's former fanbase--PC Gamers.
So it's not just Europeans, it's PC Gamers too.
PC Gamers and Europeans need to unite, and buy less s**tty products, like xbox360s and consoles in general.

well i could understand it if PC players were getting some stuff that you weren't,but in this case,we have the same consoles as our American cousins
and maybe if we are to unite, why should we ditch consoles?,why not ditch PCs?...or maybe we should all ditch our PCs and Consoles, and start playing out again like we did when we were kids...treehouses,ropeswings,stealing the rope from the nearby industrial estate, climbing factory roofs for our footballs ...coming home at night with dog s**t half way up our backs because we been playing crop soccer in the middle of the playing fields at 10 o' clock at night etc etc

Apparrently the PC demo will be out after this 360beta, woohoo
As for who is eligible for the Beta, there was some confusion caused this week stating that the Beta would be US-exclusive, however that statement was premature, because we have not finalized final details on who would be involved in the beta at this point. In order to get started, and kick off the beta we will begin in the United States, but are looking to go International and currently sorting out those details.
I did have this game as number 1 buy and have pre booked it even before I pre booked halo3 and the now delayed GTA4. After hearing this I've cancelled my pre booked order and will wait until I can buy it second hand somewhere. If they want to treat me as a 2nd class customer then they don't get my hard earned money.
