Quake Arena coming to XBLA!

CVG's social life in ruins as Id brings super-addictive online shooter to XBLA - freeware PC version also confirmed!
More bad news for CVG editors' social lives; Id Software has revealed that Quake Arena (which we're assuming is a variant of Quake 3) is coming to Xbox Live Arcade - meaning we're now going to be forced to continue our post-work bouts at home. The missus won't be happy.

It's being developed in partnership with Pi Studios, the blokes responsible for the PC port of Halo 2 and the upcoming PS2 version of Mercenaries 2. Surely, they couldn't possibly mess up the Quake 3 formula, right?

The release looks thanks to the stellar response from fans to Doom XBLA. Id CEO Todd Hollenshead told Kotaku "It was amazing, sales were incredible" (don't tell him we didn't spend seven quid on his port).

In more Quake 3-related news, Id also dropped word on 'Quake Zero', a free web-based version of Quake 3 mutliplayer. Apparently it's an attempt for Id to dip its toe in online advertising, and bring its once-dominate online shooter back into the fold. This will allow virtually anyone with a computer to play Quake matches, Hollenshead said.

Not that we're looking a gift horse in the mouth, but can't you pick up Quake 3 for about 50p now anyway?

you can pick it up for insanely cheap. however, its finding it thats the problem. all the game shops around here seem to have an abundance of quake 2, but finding 3 is as difficult as finding KOTOR on its own.

I'm not even going to kick off the joypad vs mouse and keyboard row!

This is gunna be real pricey on xbl

I remember playing it on the PC loads, and then it came out on Dreamcast and I got the mouse and keyboard for it Very Happy Needless to say, I was Godlike. If you could get a keyboard and mouse for 360 I'd probably get it.

I dunno, I had it for the dreamcast too but without the mouse, but I was still a crackshot with the rail gun... ah, the blood explosions...

I've still got it somewhere actually. Cool.

Was hoping they'd release Doom 2 next, but I suppose this will have to do.
monkey_puncher on 4 Aug '07
not sure if i want to revist that part of my past lol

Aha!

One of those rare games that nailed perfection in its gameplay (imo).

If it just supported kb+mouse it'd probabl become my most played all over again. I'll still pick it up though. Really hope they don't include auto-aim, all that modern junk doesn't suit Arena.

PS Also played the Dreamcast version (as well as PC), ran the PSY clan. Happy days!

someones going to have to...

it will have to have auto aim (are your pointing the right way? - thats near enough...LOCK ON !!). And be slowed down to half speed ...surely ?

this game is Waaaay too fast for a joypad !

I'm sure you were very skillful with pad.
but up against a good mouse and keboard player.. you lose !
no disrespect...its just a cold hard fact.
Its not that consol players are worse, they just dont have an accurate quick controller for these games.

And what will the XBLA version cost $10?
horngreen on 6 Aug '07
I had Quake 3 Revolution on PS2 and it was quite a good game. Pad only mind but a laugh in split screen.

Yeh me too, loved it.

Yeah probably, maybe even 800points if we get lucky, still worth the money though.
I loved the DC version and after a while the controls felt like second nature, even my misses loved playing it!
