New HDMI 360 confirmed

"Yes, we are offering an HDMI port for Xbox 360," confesses Microsoft
Following yesterday's report that Microsoft will slap an HDMI port on future Premium 360 models, Microsoft has confirmed the move.

Previously HDMI only came as standard on the Elite model (due for European release on August 24). But Microsoft has now moved to included the port as standard. Microsoft sent out the following statement to the US press: "Yes, we are offering an HDMI port for Xbox 360 simply as another choice in Xbox 360 owners' games and entertainment experience. Retailers are gradually introducing HDMI-enabled Xbox 360s into the channel to meet demand."

Update: Major UK retailer GAME has told CVG that UK gamers should not expect to see HDMI-enabled Premium 360s until next year at the earliest. With the Elite console out on August 24 "HDMI Premiums might not start arriving until as late as summer next year," it added.

Meanwhile, Microsoft UK remains unavailable for comment. Update ends.

There's no confirmation however that the Core Sytem will be treated the same. "We have not announced any plans to add HDMI to the Xbox 360 Core System," MS told ShackNews. "We are constantly updating the console's more than 1700 internal components and therefore will not comment on details of specific components or manufacturing processes."

Nice. I bought a brand new Xbox 360 a couple of months ago from GAME so I'll wait until the shops have the new models and then ask them to swap my old one for the new one! The guy at the shop said I could do that anyway as I was complaining about how poorly built they were.
Doctor_Hades on 9 Aug '07
I plan on doing this too, gamestation has exchanged all 4 of my faulty systems in store. Most annoyingly they were all well ventilated, 3 developed serious graphic glitches and the 4th got the red lights.

Not too bothered about the HDMI as my PS3 has taken that port up but I would like a cooler more reliable machine.
PsychoMania on 9 Aug '07
As my 360 got the red lights and somehow recovered, hopefully MS can give me an HDMI ported one when my one eventually dies again.

it's pretty worrying seeing new versions of consoles part way through a life cycle. do they now expect us all to buy multiple versions.

i guess sales figures are artificially high because of swaps also!
4321emanresu on 9 Aug '07
I am a bit p**sed off, as MS are not doing anything decent towards their existing customer base. Wish I could swap my 360 for a new one with the HDMI cable, but as I have had my machine since lauch, I have no chance. I am not buying a new one.

It's not like it's uncommon. Look at the PS1, PS2 and GBA...

I've heard that sony are bringing out a new machine! It does'nt have a built-in hard-drive, no Blu-ray, no HDMI and breaks a lot! Laughing Oh, but it will have plenty of games.... Laughing

A good move for people like me who don't have a 360 but a real kick on the nuts for people who have a 360!

Changing the HDD capacity is one thing but to revise their premium console to the spec of the supposedly elite version make's it hard to justify the price of the elite now.

Happy days for me though it means i'll defo be getting one before xmas and with MS probably pushing the Elite version i'll be able to grab a cracking deal (hopefully).

Only joking! Confused
Mark240473 on 9 Aug '07
I still think adding the HDMI port has more to do with complying with the HD copywrite protection system than anything else, well that and Americans finding more than one plug a bit confusing Laughing

When is it due to hit uk shores? Confused

I think every system has had hardware revisions. I think the xbox is the only one that didnt have any drastic ones, relating to what users could do with it, like use of diff cables etc.
quain-chi on 9 Aug '07
GAME are full of s**t,itll be here by Christmas. They just dont want people to stop buying the current 360 and wait for the revised version.
LEEROY_UK1 on 9 Aug '07
I really want the CVG guys to find out if MS will be offering these 360s as part of their replacement service.

The people who have been putting up with faulty boxes for the past year surely deserve some kind of reward for not abandoning the console altogether. I only got mine a couple of months back and it's on it's way out already, it'd be nice to think they'd replace it with an HDMI one too.

And we all know Microsoft needs all the good publicity it can get Smile
Dajmin on 9 Aug '07
how much better is hdmi to component/vga? Would there be a notable difference?
keyser7 on 9 Aug '07
HDMI offers no visual advantages to the standard HD ports, it's just a DRM enabler Sad

this is standard procedure in all industries, it happens to cars all the time with engine upgrades, and more kit etc. If you look at the ford focus the original 1.6 engine was poo and it was later upgraded with more power etc. why complain you have a fully working system that will continue to work (unless it breaks Wink )?

quit whining for god sake!!!

i currently use the hd cable (rgb) into the back of my hd tv. the picture quality is outstanding. will using the hdmi cable / connections on the back of tv produce an even better picture?
roger4000 on 9 Aug '07
for those people who have 1080p screens supported through hdmi but not component it will be a nice bonus, especially with some games supporting 1080p like Virtua Tennis.

can't someone come up with a converter to enable current 360's to have hdmi and therefore better 1080p compatibility? even if it means it won't support hdcp.
shellster2 on 9 Aug '07
HDMI delivers better image quality for high-definition video (at up to 1080p resolution) than can component video (limited to 1080i output on the non-HDMI Xbox 360) or VGA (at 1080p).

So this is a huge boom to new Xbox buyers who want a low(er)-cost, high-def capable console gaming system. At $350 with HDMI, the 20GB Xbox360 Premium now undercuts the PS3 by $50. (If you want to play high-definition movies, though, Xbox is still more expensive: to that $350 entry price, you also have to add $180 for the Xbox HD DVD Player; PS3 already includes a Blu-ray Disc drive.)

The price shift and inclusion of HDMI is a smart decision to position Xbox vs. PS3; however, these changes make me question where the Xbox 360 Elite fits now. The Elite being $480, its only benefit being that it offers six times the hard drive space for packing away Xbox Live marketplace stuff. And a black chassis. In my book, that's not enough distinction to justify $130 extra.

Is there going to be a price cut for EU Xbox360s ?

To be honest, I am glad I have a working 360, at least I can safely say that the 360 is a great reliable piece of kit (IMO) as I have never had any problems with it, unlike those that are on their 3rd, 4th or 5th machine Smile

I fell into that camp, owning a 360 since launch and no problems, then 2 weeks ago 3 red lights. It started working again for about a week and now it is completely dead. Waiting on a repair, I am on holiday in two weeks as well, so maybe it will be back by then.

I own a Wii, 360 and PS3. Right now I can safely say that the 360 is the best console, with the best choice of games and the best online experience. I just wish MS had made the console just a little more robust but I don't regret my purchase for one moment. The number of games I have played and the excessive amount of hours I have used it for make me really appreciate the console.

Does anyone else think the PS3 pad is really bad. It is light, feels cheap and tacky, then the missing rumble I miss more than I thought. I only got a PS3 a week ago.

personally, i feel xbox was rushed.

all these addons or improvements should have happened BEFORE launch. HDMI isnt new tech anymore, plus xbox has no support for anything more than dts audio as far as i can tell.

microsoft claimed there was no reason for hdmi even though consumers wanted it, and then backtracked into putting it into their system.

all this "choice" is just crap marketing speak, and the worst thing, people fall for it. it's just so they can withhold all the extras to charge more later. wifi adapter, hd-dvd drive (youd think if hd was as important as they shout, they would have built it in!). the worst part in my opinion is £30 controllers with no battery pack as standard.

when they announced aftermarket 'extras'. i thought they we're talking about the games! not the console!

anyway at least 'the vast majority of xbox consumers are having a great experience'. i hate that word, its not an "experience", no game on the xbox allows you to experience anything other than generic first person shooters (including halo). no game so far has shown any real emotion, or connection with players. not all characters need to be space marines.
lmaolmao on 9 Aug '07
totally agree with you lmaolmao. wont be long before its another upgrade and it'll have blu-ray built in and then we'll have to exchange our 360s again. m$ has this neat strategy to slowly drip every penny from us. if sony did something similar the fans would be in rage. personally since playing GoW the rest of the 360 games have been s**te. it's a similar thing on the ps3. stop the upgrading nonsense and get on with building decent games m$ and sony! Nintendo gets a cheer, but again games are becoming too familiar.
cykosis on 9 Aug '07
I've only had a 360 for a short time, resisting the next gen onslaught as long as possible. Then it hit my 30th birthday and couldn't hold on any longer so got one then.

Price drops and added features were always gonna happen as soon as I dipped my toes in next-gen waters, so I'd feel like I rushed into it. So I guess what I'm saying is, you can thank me for M$'s decision! Wink

CVG has been pretty sensitive this year in all camps... Wink

MS aren't doing themselves any favours....

Bloody video games. If it's not Nintendo waving crap about, not releasing anything in the UK; EVAH, or Sony telling us the PS3 will give us orgasms and once excavated 1000yrs in the future, it'll still work and run the latest software, it's MS telling you not to worry about your 10th 360 floating at the top of the tank, you can buy a new one with added "go faster" air holes.....

I'll be glad when I get dementia and don't have to pay £40 a pop for my entertainment...

So... 360 gets new hardware revisions and people take it as a chance to bitch about them doing it? wtf is wrong with people these days. Every console gets hardware revisions. It's not like they took key features away like Sony did with the new PSP (analog)and the PStwo(hdd FTL)... didn't hear much bitching about that.

what?! psp has lost it's analogue control stick! OH NO!

cos you come on here with such authority in the videogame biz, and such an insight into peoples reactions, what you say must be true!

in the immortal words of phil harrison "oh, yea, i think i just forgot....one thing" your wrong, psp lite still has its analogue stick. hmm, maybe thats why there was no "bitching" about it....cos it didnt happen.
lmaolmao on 10 Aug '07
The quality of the screen is just as good using the component cables supplied with the Xbox. Also the 360 should have had a HDMI connection from launch. Microsoft dropped it to keep the price down.

hi there im new here, id just like to say that unless u have bout a tv in the last few months and have the 1080p it will make no diffence if u use the cables or the hdmi lead as the 1080p tv's have only jsut come out most tvs are 1080i even ones with hdmi trust me i know sony were banging on about it at prelaunch
