Beware the 'Sony buying Rockstar' rubbish

Fan site starts rumour fires, Rockstar spouts protocol, CVG takes the piss
The kids are waving their rumour flags again this morning, sending the internet on fire (the naive part, anyway) with claims that Sony Computer Entertainment is about to buy GTA house, Rockstar.

The rumour comes from fan site PlayStation Universe (strike one), which says it caught wind of the unexpected news while eating dinner with the developers in California. We reckon some wine was probably involved as well if they were over 21.

The site says, "Various sources in the press and development team state that Sony is looking to take Rockstar 'under their wings'. While we learned that any agreement Sony and Take Two entered into would not affect the upcoming Grand Theft Auto IV, such an agreement would presumably affect any future releases from Rockstar, including the new franchise Sony has been discussing and L.A. Noire."

But wait; the site has since retracted a piece of its article, correcting the major error that they were actually eating in Westwood, and not Hollywood. Ah, it all makes sense now.

It sounds like another example of a fan's wet dream to us. Unless there's a surprise outbreak of mad cow disease in its offices, we could never see Take Two flogging off its prize asset. On top of that, SCEI is still posting losses and cutting back on expenditure so we can't see it spending what would be a hugely exaggerated amount on Rockstar.

It'd be bad news for Rockstar as well, which'd be going from its long-running strategy of multi-platform development to limiting itself to just one console. So in summary; it wouldn't make sense for Sony, it wouldn't make sense for Take Two and it wouldn't make sense for Rockstar.

Rockstar expectedly told us, "we don't comment on rumour or speculation", and this time we think it's actually because they're following protocol, and not because there's a bigger story hiding under the cloth. Although it wouldn't hurt to just come out and say it's all bollocks, would it?

"The rumour comes from fan site PlayStation Universe (strike one), which says it caught wind of the unexpected news while eating dinner developers in California"

Well, I think that's another strike right there - it would be outrageous to be eating any developers, giving away that it is a complete hoax.

Could we not perhaps have a sub section of news for, 'Completely Unlikely to Ever Happen, but Interesting all the Same' news?

Anything could happen these days. Though anything probably would'nt include this. Confused

I have a Ps3 but I'm not fussed about games going to other consoles as long as I get my fix. With this open attitude I am hoping that Bioshock comes to ps3...

...probably more chance of Rockstar going to Sony - but we can but dream! Very Happy

With the drop in stock price Take 2 shares the company is ripe for a take over, hostile or not...

First of all yes this is probably exactly what it sounds like; A RUMOR. But please don't be ignorant in saying it would be bad for ALL parties involved, that's just stupid talk. 1st of all, it would be GOOD for all parties involved. Everyone knows Take-two are going down the drain (they would be there already if not for R*) so I'm pretty sure they will eventually sell up, and R* I'm sure would be sold seperatly. It would be a GREAT buy for Sony who I think are in need of another brilliant dev/pub studio, and everyone knows R* bigwigs are big fans of Sony consoles. And as for R* again it would be a great move for them, as they probably couldn't do everything they want on their own, and Sony are notoriously known for letting their studios work the way they want. So this would be perfect for R* as apposed to being bought by microsoft (who are notoriously known for interfeering with their studios projects) it just wouldnt the same R* we've come to know and love. And to say that it would be bad for R* is pants, R* DO NOT have a long-running strategy of multi platform that's b******s. Have u seen Liberty/Vice stories, CANES CANEM EDIT on the 3s**tty?? NOPE!! 99% of all R* work has been exclusive for SONY!!! So dont be stupid!! If they were to be bought by SONY the only people it would be bad for is the 3s**tty crowd. It would be better for R* anyways as I'm sure their new games won't even be able to run on the 3s**tty, unless R* dont make their game as good (which is what is happening with GTAIV). They would only be shooting themselves in the foot. And hey Mark240473 - Bioshock IS coming for the PS3, possibly by the end of the year. YEAH BABY!!

Who let the fanboys out?

Rockstar (or R* for the dextrously challenged) have always been multiplatform. GTA (as in the first, top-down one) was developed for the PC before an inferior port to the PS1. GTA3 was developed primarily for PS2 only because there was no viable alternative at the time (it started development before XBox came along) and was release soon after on PC. Don't forget they were DMA before, and made Body Harvest and Silicon Valley on the N64 too.

They signed an exclusivity deal on GTA VC and SA with Sony because, at the time, Sony had money to burn and most of the sales of the games would be on PS2 anyway. It's a different story now though, and most devs will be expecting about equal sales across all consoles on cross platform games, so exclusivity deals are going to be a bit rarer.

Sony couldn't afford Rockstar. If anyone were to buy Rockstar it would be the most expensive purchase to-datem something only MS have the kind of cash to do so...
If though the parent company of Rockstar are in trouble, I hope that they sort themselves out as it would be a shame for Rockstar to be exclusive for any console.

It would be almost pointless buying rockstar because its the talented indivuduals that make their franchises. Much like when the champ manager guys moved on to football manager and left the champ manager franchise to rot.

Sony purchased MGM for $2.9 billion back in 2005 so i dont think Sony would have to many problems buying rockstar if they were available.

Somehow I don't think they could afford that sort of investment for a video game developer...
The record at the moment is $377 million, which MS paid for Rare.
I would say that Rockstar would be worth a fair bit more than Rare due to the GTA series selling so much and basically being a system seller.
Sony can't even afford to take too much of a loss on PS3 so to say they could afford to pay more than $377 million for a developer that has only ever created one great series is just stupid. Only MS could afford such a purchase but I hope for the sake of everyone no one buys them. MS would basically own the video game industry if they got Rockstar and I for one want to see some competition. That way everyone benefits.

If Sony wants to buy Rockstar Games, then let them, because not even a war from fanboy’s, could not stop something, like this happening if it happens that is.

Have you forgoten Microsoft's game division is in debt.

Although it wouldn't hurt to just come out and say it's all b******s, would it?

its a comforting thought for u i guess. at least i wont rule this out. there is alot of momentum building now what with rockstar showing alot of love to sony.
and yah, if it does happen it would be bad....for anyone who doesnt have a sony console.
sniper50 on 9 Aug '07
Have you forgoten Microsoft's game division is in debt.
MS's gaming division always has been in debt. They have already stated that the first 3 consoles they make are investments that they don't expect to make much money from.
Their main way of making up money with its first few consoles is LIVE and they have done extremely well into developing that service.
Also, the fact that they are in debt means nothing. They have already bought Lionshead and will most likley snap up any other developers that they feel would help strengthen the Xbox brand.
On the other hand, if Sony was in the sort of debt MS was then it would mean the end of the PS brand...

Someone's on a microsoft payroll.

Funny how C&VG accuses another gamingsite of posting fanboy rumours while they were the first to post "HMV takes MGS4 360 pre-orders".

Credibility says bye.
Hypocrisy, damage control and cheap shots say hi.

Amazing how the console/fanboy war turns gamingsites and colleagues against each other because of their bias.

But Microsoft as a whole are absolutely rolling in it. While it's apparently at its lowest level for five years, they still have a cash pile floating around of nearly 30 *billion* dollars...

And it's not like Sony's game division is doing any better - expecting to lose 488 million dollars this year.

i would love it,just love it if sony bought rockstar if only just to spite c&vg, they are becoming a joke just like 1up and joystick ...
ahmer71 on 9 Aug '07
wow, rumors can be very interesting, frightening, or pathetic. this ones pathetic.
madrandall on 9 Aug '07
Why would this be bad for sony?

Surely having GTA5 as an exclusive will be a major system seller and

also it will expand there ever growing 1st party development

This can also be good for R* they will get funding from Sony and won't have to worry about there finacial future.

What? CVG having a go at someone for posting an unsubstantiated rumour? Oh no!
But...what about CVG posting that "accurate" twaddle about MGS4 being on the 360 because HMV said so? What did you say? Bag-cat-of-out? Well, I think this is a case of kettle-pot-the-black-calling.

Not that I think this is true, of course. But CVG, admit it, you're just as bad!

To start with, it was two different people that wrote up this and the article you're referring too, so no hypocrisy there. Second, a store putting up something for preorder is a bunch more reliable than some random guy on the internet saying "Rockstar told me at dinner that Sony is buying the company".

Both rumours are equally rubbish.
Taralla on 9 Aug '07
Take two are a troubled company, the shareholders want to kill the board from managing to turn a company who should be rolling in it, to one that isnt staying above water.

But i doubt sony will buy them, mainly because their already in a war with MS, they dont want to make it even bigger, who do you think MS would go after if sony got take-two, EA is my guess, with a slush fund of some 40 billion dollars sitting earing interest for a buying spree, MS need to expend into other areas, why not target the publisher in the world, a company with a mega amount of best selling brands, im sure it would p**s ubisoft off, but with windows being passive in the pc world and ms and ea together, then their wouldnt be much they could do about it.

as for sony they would have to go after a large company (capcom, konami?) just to keep up.

ANd its for the reason listed above, that this wont ever happen, rockstar, take two wont be taken over by sony or MS, EA or ubisoft maybe, but not the big two consoles players, it would trigger a war that would destroy the industry and kill any choice people have left.

Don't tell Jack Thompson about "Killing Old Folk", for god sakes! It sounds like it could be a rather interesting series, especially on the Wii...
