According to a survey carried out by stat-crunchers the NPD Group, many next-gen gamers aren't as in touch with their technology as they probably make out.
One of the reasons PS3 weighs in higher than its rivals is the very-well publicised fact that it carries a state of the art Blu-ray player. To get the same picture from 360 you need to shell out for the HD DVD add-on and Wii won't even play VHS movies let alone DVDs.
The NPD survey revealed that only 40 percent of PS3 owners surveyed knew that the PlayStation 3 system had a Blu-ray player built-in, even though it SAYS IT ON THE BOX! And apparently only half of those people had played a Blu-ray movie in the last ten times they turned the console on.
We're speechless.
The survey quizzed 6,260 console owners aged from six up to 44. Read more here.
I've recently started buying blu-ray movies as the picture and sound quality makes a big difference compared to standard dvd's. After watching Mission Impossible 3 and Casino Royal I am hooked. Just bought a NTSC version of 300 that works on UK ps3's. Has'nt arrived yet.

Picture and sound quality are second to the lack of regional lockout for me. Region encoding was always one of DVD's poor points, at least with Blu-ray it is optional (and the production companies don't appear to be enforcing region protection).
Get Planet Earth on Blu-ray - makes any other disc I've ever seen pale in comparison. It is a pity if you live in the UK you have to source it from the states (even though this is a BBC production..)
So they don't actually know that they are paying 200 pounds for a high def DVD player, well we all knew most people that bought a PS3 were a few shillings short litrally!
I'm, sure theres parts of the UK that think the PS3 is a friggin george forman grill! Saying that, I think the george forman grill does have more software.

As the above quote shows maybe if they released a wider variety of films instead of those aimed at 19 year old boys high def DVD formats might do better. The most predictable films in Hollywood history have been released in the last 10 years and the only films they seem to give the high def DVD treatment to were made in the last 7 years. So you have an overpriced player, overpriced DVDs and are aiming it at people with limited funds. Of course my comment seems pointless after seeing that Rush Hour 3 made 50 million over the weekend. Ugh we Americans have NO taste as a whole.
71 percent of PS3 owners and likely purchasers rated backward compatibility as the most important PS3 function, but only 31 percent are aware that that functionality even exists on the system.
How can more people rate it as the most important function than actually know it's there?
As for DS users and likely purchasers, 57 percent are aware there is a touch-screen, 53 percent know about the dual-screen, and 49 percent are aware of stylus function.
this is bulls**t and is quite frankly the most stupid thing ive heard, it says blu-ray on the PS3 box on every game box and every disc and on the PS3 itself, ridiculous.

I've been meaning to get Planet Earth for a while now but the price is still quite expensive. Also, watching a baby chick's head bob about in the jaws of a wild dog, with little tweets of fear coming from its tiny beak - in HD - could make me cry real tears! Mind you, they say only a real man cries...
It does beg the question who has been buying these consoles if this is true. Who in their right mind spends Ł425 on a games console without even knowing what it does.

Like I said, this 'survey' is a mess. I wouldn't take it as absolute fact.
Just bought a NTSC version of 300 that works on UK ps3's. Has'nt arrived yet.
I'm gonna quote you without any condescending comments about your entertainment preferences, unlike some people... I ordered 300 as well, still waiting for mine too. Lets see who wins! Was it MovieTyme? Also, I've got Planet Earth on Blu-Ray, nyeah nyeah
Anyway to get to what I came in here to say, I've got 47 Blu-Ray films/series now. I use my PS3 as a video player pretty much all the time. In fact since its started upscaling DVDs, I'd say 90% of the time its spent powered up its been playing DVDs/BDs, while the other 10% was for gaming. To that end I am quite shocked that some people don't know its there. For me its the PS3's main feature! At least until September when the big-ticket games start rolling in.

Another magazine, PSU3, had an article in it which claimed that 72% of PS3 owners had bought a Blu-ray movie so who do you believe?
Personally, I knew that the PS3 had a BD drive when I bought it and I'd wager that most people who've bought the PS3 at launch would have known that too because the price kind of gives it away even before you see it mentioned on the box. Anyone who didn't know is either illiterate, American or just deliberately ignorant if you ask me because the games cases and discs have Blu-ray Disc plastered all over them too so it's kind of hard to overlook if you're semi-intelligent.

You two should get a room together, then you can share your Blu-Ray copy of "Broke back mountain"
What a load of sh*te! All of the people I know whom have (or don't have for that matter) a PS3 know that the bloody thing has Blu-Ray. Just because the vast majority of owners don't use it to play movies doesn't mean that they don't know it's there. Simple fact is that my mates can't see any real benefits in ditching their DVD players at the moment to play more expensive blu-ray movies

OMG!!! Brokeback Mountain on Blu-Ray... I need a PS3 now ;p Nothing better than seeing too handsome men at it...
that just means that 60% of PS3 owners can't read, or choose not to read. it says "Blu-ray" right there on the box. i've said it before and i'll say it again: there's some shady happenings going on as far as PS3 news on the internet. yeah, must of the bad rumblings are probably Sony's fault; but sometimes news (like this) is so far-fetched that it begs the question: is there some sort of behind-the-scenes conspiracy going on?
goes 2 show ppl dont relly care about movies that much...i personally dont ive always rather watched films downstairs on sky plus,easy...but then again i prefer to play games on my console not watch films, nice that its got it but cummon...all it is,is a bigger disc ffs aint nothing special, scalers on the 360 can push out the same picture i bet! this blu gay hd dvd stuff is stupid, dvd is fine.sony has a way of giving its tech snazzy names n people think oooooo that sounds really good...fell 4 that wiv the emotion engine,ha what a joke that was.

The simple truth is that people are buying a PS3 purely based on the fact that they previously owned a PS2. In other words they are buying blindly without any knowledge of what features the console has...

Yeah that's partly true if not a bit of a generalization! The PlayStation brand name is the all important factor.
I'm not surprised at all - it just highlights the general stupidity of people. well, stupidity could be a little harsh, but general ignorance about products they buy based on brand loyalty and just wanting the Next Big Thing.
An example of this was that my mate had an Xbox 360 and had bought a 50 inch HD TV. I asked him if he had set it to HD - to which he responded saying he thought it automatically happens when you plug it into a new tv.
I then had to do it for him - switch the cable switch to the HD setting and change the resolution in the settings.
I seriously think he would have had it set to standard def until the next gen comes out if he hadn't done that. Thing is - he didn't care either. He said thanks but admitted he wasn't too fussed either way.
I guess it is the same with the BluRay - if you can watch DVDs anyway then a lot of people aren't bothered-my mate could see the game display so he didn't care if it was HD or not.
Well to be fair, the Blu-ray sign on the PS3 game boxes is pretty hard to spot unless you're looking for it. It tends to be the actual game title most people look at, not some little logo hidden on the back of the box in the corner somewhere. However, the thought that people would buy a console at that price without even knowing what it does just boggles the mind. Just goes to show how brain dead the vast majority of people are!

Exactly. And this is why the Wii is utterly trouncing the other consoles. Nintendo, for the most part, were probably right. Most people really aren't that fussed.
To be honest, right now, I think HD is still totally in it's infancy anyway. I've spent a lot of time researching the different HD settings and requirements, checking out the specs of the 360 and PS3, what cables produce the best picture, what TV offers the best performance... the list is endless.
Then, after all that effort (and money) I am rewarded by having to spend hours on forums learning about frame tearing and v-sync issues, f***ying around with display options when a game looks like crap (Crackdown had terrible tearing but only when I was driving?!), and worrying that my 360 - or my TV - might be screwed, only to find that this is a common condition of the power-house next gen consoles.
WTF?! I mean, seriously, I sometimes wish I was one of those people who didn't care about this stuff. Back in the day, it was enough that you cared about games. Nowadays you have to force yourself into being a total nerd to even understand how to get the best out of your console.
If people don't know about Blu-ray, it's for the same reason they don't know about the difference between 1080i and 1080p; the average Joe on the street just doesn't care yet. Once a standard format applies, all will be well again. Until then, expect ignorance or just plain nonchalance from the masses.
I can VERY easily believe this. When selling the PS3's feature to a prospective buyer I mention the Blu-ray ability (which IS the real reason its Ł120 more expensive that the 360) and I'm not kidding here, 90% ask 'what's blu-ray?'
At this point I ask them if they have a newish flat screen TV. If answer is no 'Don't worry about it then' is what I tell them. If answer is yes, I explain what it is and can do. Half of them think its cool, the other half don't care and ask when GTA is out on it.
We got a copy of Casino Royale on Blu-ray to rent out for all the PS3 owners to give Blu-ray a go....... It has NEVER rented out.
lol cant be good for blue ray if noone knows lol neways somebody said on here that the ps3 is for 18 - 25s or something like that.. as far as im a aware a 1yr can have a ps3 if they cud use it lol never heard such rubbish that its only for certain ages.. as for how a 6yr gets one neone heard of parents im sure they brought you stuff when you were 6.
long live normal dvds i say cant be bottomd to have to buy it all over again cuz u know ur gonna have to eventually..
There is only one reason that people who own PS3's aren't watching Blu ray dvd's, and that's the price of the movies..there's not a chance in hell I'm ever going to pay Ł25 for a movie on blu ray, when the same movie has been out on dvd for ages for a fiver
unless the price drops drastically, no one will be buying blu ray movies in the near future

I don't know, not a big fan of the original. Hopefully they release the new version soon, you know, the one from the horses' point of view: Here's a Clip
For the record I've actually never seen, nor will I ever see, Brokeback Mountain or anything else that celebrates homosexuality. Thank you and goodnight.
To be honest the reason I got my PS3 was for games, not blu-ray but I just can't imagine the people who bought a Ł425 piece of equipment even if it's a PS3 or not wouldn't know what it's capable of doing!
Sure I don't know every function of my PS3 but not know a main feature beggers belief!
My friend bought a PS3 and we were playing Motostorm. I steered by waving the control pad around and he looked shocked. He didn't know about six-axis, he just blindly upgraded from his ps2

It was the same when the PS2 was released, about half the people I knew who had one didn't know it could play DVDs! But then I was living in the States at the time, I guess it's a bit different here, we tend to read more about these things.

Exactly. WE've been told since e3 04 or when ever revolution was announced that machines were too complex (leaving aside the content matter of this topic-obviously this is a mental problem). I believe this to be true. I knew ps2, gc and xbox were '128-bit era machines' (I don't even fully understand that) but now? Who knows? I can see spec lists of course but they are about five times as long with things i'm not prepared to become a nerd to understand. The wii is the answer; yeah maybe a few minigames too many but by christmas i'll be enjoying games sony and ms would give their right arms for because frankly mash bros. etc would sell if they were made out of cardboard.

Chavs.
Too expensive, any chav that has a PS3 stole it.
Word on the street is that Chavs like get their bitches preggers then claim child benefits to help fund their decadent lifestyles.
Then again your typical Chav will probably steal a bunch of PS3's sell them and use the cash to buy his very own PS3. Wicked guy I 'as finally got me a PSfree init. Booyakka.
