Well, the rumours of a UK price cut for Xbox 360 on Bioshock launch day have proved true - Microsoft is cutting £20 off the Core and £30 off the Premium 360 pack, affective as of August 24.
The Premium will now retail at £249.99 and the Core will go for the a bargain £179.99 - that's as cheap as a Wii.
The new mass-market price point will no-doubt tempt even more mainstream gamers on to the 360 bandwagon - a market Microsoft has increasingly sorted after with titles like Viva Piñata, the Vision Camera and upcoming quiz game Scene It!
It also puts the 360 Premium pack at more than £150 cheaper than a PlayStation 3 (ouch!).
"We're pleased to be able to offer Xbox 360 at a new, lower estimated retail price," said Stephen McGill, head of Gaming and Entertainment, Xbox UK.
"We pioneered the successful concept of multiple products for multiple categories of consumer. First-timers will love the Xbox 360 Core system, which offers an affordable entry into high-definition gaming. The Xbox 360 Elite, with its large hard drive and wireless controller, will appeal to casual and experienced gamers and families."
In addition, Microsoft has revealed that the Xbox 360 Elite will carry an RRP of £299.99 - 30 quid less than originally expected.
Xbox 360 Elite is out this Friday and features a 120GB HDD and an HDMI port and of course comes in a black finish.
Elite accessories such as the 120GB hard drive will also be in the shops this Friday, the HDD priced at a whopping £129.99 (wait for Video Marketplace we reckon) and a black wireless controller for £32.99.
There will also be pink and blue 360 controllers released to entice your kids to console more as well as the nifty chat pad. These should all be in stores by the end of September.
In case you missed it, Microsoft's Aaron Greenburg defended the hefty price of the 120GB hard drive, saying, "we know it is expensive and we have definitely heard that feedback but it is a little apples and oranges to compare it to internal PC hard drives."
Well, my 360 died on me last Tuesday (my Birthday goddamnit!).UPS are on there way today to pick it up, but I have a sneaky feelin' that I might just pop out on Friday to grab me an Elite. Oh, by the way, my xbox died on me just as I selected 'shutdown console'! I did'nt know this meant friggin' permanently though. Anyone elses died doing the same thing?
Great to finally have a price cut, but i feel Microsoft could have easily cut a lot more off it. I don't see £30 making much of a difference to the premium packs for the average Joe who is tempted to buy it.
Hopefully i will be getting a 360 after Christmas.
Nice news for people tempted to invest in a 360 later this year. I think this piles the pressure on Nintendo now. The hardware is the same price as a Core but the tecnology for 360 is miles aheaad of Wii so if your looking for value for money then surely 360 would win every time. I already have a 360 so this news doesn't directly effect me. The only benefit for me is that this may/should lead to a Wii price cut, which may lead me to invest in one to sit alongside my 360.
So that puts the elite a 125 quid cheaper, the premium 175 quid cheaper and the core 245 quid cheaper than the PS3.
Or on games terms if you have 425 quid you could get PS3 with 2 games or an elite xbox with 3 - 4 games, or a premium xbox with 5 - 6 games or a core xbox with about 8 - 9 games, tough choice, but the elite looks a bargin now and the premium looks a steel, the core looks like a waste of money still, it should do well against the Wii and PS2 market.

It could make the difference though £250 is another one of those physiological price barriers (£279 still seems like a weird price) which might just see a bit of an increase in sales. Although I don't think that we will see a massive boom until it drops to £200 for the premium and by the look of things that may be a while yet.
The price of the 120 GB HDD is an absolute disgrace when you consider that I upgraded my PS3's HDD to a 160 GB one three months ago and for just £60. Now you can buy a 250 GB 2.5" HDD for less than £70 and even the 3.5" only cost around £65-£70 for PCs. Disgusting really that Microsoft are blatantly ripping its customers off asking that much. And, yes, I thought the 20 GB HDD at £65 was obscenely overpriced too. It wouldn't have bothered me if I didn't want one but on the 360 you have little choice as to which drives to buy unlike on the PS3.

I was looking into doing that still, Which HDD did you get and from where, And did you rip your existing files using a external HDD,?

I bought a 160 GB HDD 2.5" SATA Western-Digital Scorpio HDD (5,400 rpm, 8MB buffer) from Komplett for around £60 before I bought my PS3 so I upgraded it as soon as I got the console in March so didn't need to backup my files.
However, I do have an external 250 GB Maxtor HDD that I use to periodically backup the data on the PS3 onto using the Backup utility in the System menu although it does take a long time. If you have an external HDD then you can use that to backup then restore your data with.
One warning though, be very, very careful removing the mounting screws on the internal drive bay as they are very tight and it is all too easy to strip the heads as I found out. Fortunately I was able to remove them using wire cutters but it was an inconvenience I could have done without at the time!
They are still the dodgy models though. You could'nt give me one.
Wow another negative comment in a 360 topic by you.
The guys a PS3 fanboy regretting his costly £425 purchase. As for the HDD, I agree that they are far too expensive. I understand why MS don't allow you to use any HDD though. A great example is PS3's case. You can use any HDD, which is handy as you can pick them up for much cheaper than the MS's 360 versions. The only problem is that this could be the PS3's biggest mistake when it comes to protecting against piracy. I pretty sure that in the near future someone will develop an ISO loader which will allow pirates to load downloaded PS3 game ISO's from their 3rd party HDD...
£129.99 is way too much for a 120gig hard drive. I can understand people wanting it when they start their video dowload service, but right now all it's good for is hoarding demos, game trailers and XBLA games that you know you'll never really get around to playing more than once.
I was thinking about getting a XBox360 when the price comes down, but £30 for the core isn't all that much of a saving, even putting it at the same price point as the Wii. I know there's loads more 'hardcore' games (*s*******) than there is on the Wii, but the unreliability issue is still pretty much the only (massive) thing that puts me off wasting £180 on a machine. I know some people have had their original machine for years, but I've heard that loads of gamers are still having to go without their machines and send it backwards and forwards to get repairs. Too much hassle in my opinion. If you buy something, it should work. I don't have to send my tv off for repairs evey five months and that's on 18 hours a day, seven days a week! Then there's all the rest of the add-on gumpf to buy which sounds pretty costly. I may wait until Sony lower the price of the PS3 and give them my money unless I hear there's problems at their camp.
Going back to what theideal said, why would future games be rendered useless on the core package? Again, something I didn't want to hear.

Vulcan, sometimes you talk pap. What makes you think that I am regretting buying a ps3? I've had 2 360's and both have gone faulty. I regretted buying one of those for sure. The ps3 is still in its infancy so I agree the games are not as good as the 360's at the mo but there is a lot to look forward to.
The truth is I also like the 360 - but without the faults. When the new chipset comes out with hdmi then I will get one. At least then you can stop calling me a sony fanboy. And when I do I want your gamer ID so I can kick your bottom on Halo 3! That would be worth buying a 360 alone.
Going back to what theideal said, why would future games be rendered useless on the core package? Again, something I didn't want to hear.
Because MS had a policy of forcing developers to make games assuming that there was no hard drive available which can limit what can be put into a game because with a hdd you could install stuff to it rather than stream it off the disk, it saves space on the disk (cos you can compress stuff more if its an installer package) and speeds up loading.
Recently though, MS devided that they would allow developers to make games that required the hdd, so anyone with a core system won't be able to play these games unless they get an external hdd, which will be a hell of a lot slower than a built in one, so we could end up with a split in games that will work on one system and not others even though they're all 360 games.

None of the hard-drives are built into the 360 - they all just clip on and off so it won't make any difference.

Team 360 are so dumb! *Sigh* Well when I'm not at work or otherwise engaged, I'll be playing Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 until I can get a cheap PS3. At least all that gumpf comes as standard and I don't have to worry about future-proofing the console. Team 360 are so dumb!
Going back to what theideal said, why would future games be rendered useless on the core package? Again, something I didn't want to hear.
Because a few (though I assume it will soon be a lot) of new and upcoming games are going to require the hard drive to play apparently. MS backtracked on their 'you have to develop it so it's playable without a HDD' policy.
They should probably just cut their losses and scrap the Core. The point of a console is to be able to drop in a game and be able to play it without worrying about system requirements.
a friend of mine is thinking about getting a 360 premium.
Does the UK premium now have the hdmi port? will shops know if they have it in stock? Do you get anything extra with the Elite model, eg free MS points?

I don't think the new HDMI 360's will be in the UK for a couple of months yet. You could always ask someone to check. The only extra you get with the Elite is a black finish and a 120GB HDD.
Going with what a few others said, some games WILL require a HDD. However, some games like Oblivion will work without a HDD but will take advantage of a HDD if you have one giving you marginally decreased loads times etc. I would have also like to see the Core scrapped but its actually been a nice advantage MS have. They can offer gamers a low priced entry into next-gen gaming which they can upgrade in the future by buying a HDD or whatever they want. I think thats what MS have focused on this gen. Giving people options and its worked. Alot of my friends are PS2 owners and wanted to upgrade to PS3 but its quite simply out of their price range being the Uni students they are. Instead I showed them what 360 has to offer and they were impressed. They could also afford the price of the Core unit and will obviously upgrade from a memory unit to a HDD when they see fit.
My xbox died on Saturday, although had it since launch, so can't complain too much compared to otheres who are on their 4th console.
UPS have collected it today for repair but with the Elite out on Friday and Bioshock, I can't wait 5wks before I get my one back, so at £300 for the Elite, am now going to get one, was just going to get the larger HDD but my xbox died just in time to convince me to upgrade

It's because of you nutters that they won't bring out the new chipset sooner! Stop buying them people! It's madness.....

I feel your loss my friend!! UPS has just picked up mine too but I was told that I should get a repaired or replaced 360 back in 28 days. I am really tempted with the Elite but with CVG posting that transfer data article it looks like I may as well wait for them to deliver back my old one. Hey-ho, as long as it's back before Halo 3 is out that is all i'm bothered about!

Can't complain, it's not even 2 years old. Microsoft love customers like you. No wonder their laughing

Dont let me say i told you so on all these new prices lol Anyway The Elite is a steal at £299 now..only £50 more than the Premium but adding HDMI and 100 more GB...the 120GB HD should have been £99 to start with let alone after the Elite gets £30 knocked off it! I suppose it will help shift alot of Elite consoles, but also p**ses off the existing userbase, meaning the premium owners would have to pay £400 and minus HDMI to get what Elite owners will get...which is not that drastic if you bought one last year, but if you bought one last month i would be going ape-s**t!
The Premium will now retail at £249.99 and the Premium will go for the a bargain £179.99 - that's as cheap as a Wii. <<< I think you guy's ment core. Just thought I'd help oot lol
Nice news for people tempted to invest in a 360 later this year. I think this piles the pressure on Nintendo now. the motion sensing technology in wii is miles ahead of that unreliable brick of a radiator u call the xbox 360. and the wii isn't competing with xbox so there is no worries for nintendo. and i hope developers hurry up with more good games for ps3 so the xbox can be shown up for the pointless waste of money that it is.

Im almost positive the elite is hdmi ready and as for the core being the same price as the wii i doubt very much that will make a huge difference to sales as the 2 consoles are aimed at different markets

There have been millions of 360's with no problems whatsoever, plus the wii controller has the motion tech, the console itself is a load of old s**te that Nintendo make a profit on and could sell for £99 if Nintendo wasn't so bloody greedy...an di doubt the PS3 will get more games yet considering more exclusives are still coming out for 360 than PS3 due to sales...try one you might like it if you werent so bloody closed minded.
360s have always been well priced and i think its a bargain at these new prices, well it would be if the thing actually worked.
£130 for the HDD though, complete rip off. im sure the 100gb pc hdd i bought a few years back was less than £100. i would imagine its more than double the price of a normal hdd. i hope the special casing is made from gold!

Yeah, at least you could pawn it in when it breaks....
Seriously though, I wish they had put the new chip in, then I would have bought one.
There have been millions of 360's with no problems whatsoever..
yep, but there have been millions of 360s that have had problems too unfortunatley.
ive said it time and time again, if they were at all reliable i would have one by now, there are some great games.
but the fact is, the majority of people i know who have one have had problems, from disc reading to red lights. And why anyone would buy something for £250+ when they know theres a massive chance its going to break is beyond me.

Would you buy a car when 30% of the steering wheels can off when you're doing 70Mph? sure there's millions of them that work perfectly, you just have to worry about the unlucky ones.
Imagine, a company making a profit on every console they made, the crazy mother f**kers. I bet car companies will be doing this in no time, the copying c**ts. Thats right microsoft and sony are selling at a lose because they really like you, there is no other reason.

Microsoft did make a loss on the Xbox 360.
And mine has been running since lauch perfectly fine.
And i use it ALOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Core is at the same price as the Wii, but you don't get any memory to save games or Wi-Fi to go online. You do with the Wii
You actually do get a 256mb memory card and 5 live arcade games packed in with the core model.
link - http://kotaku.com/gaming/rumor/european-360s-get-new-names-new-colour-291150.php
At the mo it is rumor not fact. With the Wii, Wii sports built in memory and free Wi-Fi top that for £179.99
yh but what if you dont need Wi-Fi?
And 512 MB Internal is absolutely nothing....
There should have been an option for like a 5GB Wii + 720p HD graphics....
As the DS & Wii are proving, is you don't need high end grapics to sell. If you did then the PS3 would be King.
im pretty sure if there was a HD Graphics Wii id go buy ANOTHER Wii.
I mean zelda looked good, but imagine 720p!!
Same for metroid, mario, mario Kart, Super Smahs bros etc....
And since loads have a 360 + wii or ps3 + wii they may have HDTV's so it would still selll...
You have me there. I didn't think I would need a HDTV as my 32" widescreen played my 360 fine. After I got a HDTV with HDMI iam hooked but I do like what Nintendo have done with the Wii, they have just made it about the games and nothing else

Well being honest its not, a bought a Raptor HD for my pc and it cost 250euro for about the same performance.

I agree are they having a laugh??!
You can get a 750gig sata drive for your pc for that much.
Are the hard drives in 360's made of gold or some super fast technology that is different to pc hdds???
The thing with the 360 hdds are that they use laptop ones which have always been more expensive, then with the cost of having them in the shells there in and vat and other taxs. all raise the price.

Well its a good job I am loaded then!
The only reason I say that I can't complain is because of the amount of people that have in the past, so if I start to complain, I would only get moaned at by people that are on the nth console.
I agree with you, you should only ever buy one version of the console and it shouldn't break.
This is the first console that has ever broken on me, I still have the original PS I bought at launch and that still works fine

We pay VAT aand taxes on ALL HDDs, not just the 360 one, yet most still tend to be a damn site cheaper. There is no justification for the cost of the 360 HDD. It's a rip-off, plain and simple.
The Core is at the same price as the Wii, but you don't get any memory to save games or Wi-Fi to go online. You do with the Wii
You actually do get a 256mb memory card and 5 live arcade games packed in with the core model.

And since loads have a 360 + wii or ps3 + wii they may have HDTV's so it would still selll...
in 720p they wouldn't look that much better the wii can already do hd its just that its not as powerful. if it was more powerful then 720p would be welcomed

in my experience, going from standard def to 720p is quite a big difference.
but since wii was and is meant to be the opposite of 360/ps3, i doubt anything like this will happen. It would contradict a lot of what nintendo have been saying!
Im just thinking, if you fully spec the 360 Elite up with the HD DVD drive, so its up to next gen spec like the PS3- the Elite+HDDVD weighs in at £409.98 thats nearly as much as a PS3 that comes with 2 games and an extra joypad!I know you get a bigger hard drive etc, but arent microsoft just shooting themselves in the foot here?
Although the price drop is a good thing I have noticed that the console bundles for the 360 have actually gotten worse. Many of the bundles already (in the past 24hrs) are to do with the Premium. So although this is a price drop, in terms of what I'll get when I buy a premium this weekend it'll cost me more!
So... wheres the best deal anyone has seen recently?
I'm sure Gamestation had the following: 360 premium console gears of war the darkness (plus a racing game) £289.99
This is the best deal I have found but it had just started in the shop that day so it may have changed since the weekend.
I'm actually tempted to buy this bundle before the price drop of the console and the release of the 'elite' system.
wow ok these MS fanboys seem to think their console is God - let's see then and this is based on everything I need, without games!
To "Jump In", I also need to buy: 1 additional cotroller @ £32.99, 1 Wireless Adapter @ £59.99, 1 plug n play charger @ £14.99, 1 years Xbox Live @ £39.99 f
The Elite with no games is gonna cost me £299.99, plus everything I need up there comes to £447.95 and that's without games
The Premium - same above things as elite except the new price of £249.99 without any games - and add the 120gb hard drive at the rip-off price of £129.99 ..... brings everything to £527.94
The Core - same again but new price of £179.99 add the 120gb hard drive and headset at £14.99 and it comes to £472.93
That's just three different options to think over boys, and that's all without games which are around £40 each. In theory I'm actually paying for a dodgy console anyway, the 3 year warranty only covers the 3 ROD, god knows what it'll cost for other hardware failures after a year?
Stop bigging Microsoft up, they are ripping you lot off and you fail to see it!

First things first, why when buying the premium model, why the hell would you need to go and buy a 120gb hdd anyway, when you have a 20gb one sitting there?
Also you dont need to buy a wireless kit either, you get a good either net cable in every xbox 360 sold, so just use that, you will need another joypad if you have friends that come over, and live is worth money, as for play and charge kits, once again they come under the banner of extras that you dont really need.
Its about choice, if people want to buy the core model they can, they wont be saving anything because you do need a HDD anyway, but at 250 quid for the premium model, you get everything you need out of the box, and if you want to go wireless its a choice you make, you can just use wires, works better if you ask me.
As for the warrenty, its now 3 years, thats good for anything, and since all failures do the same thing i.e. RROD, it dosnt matter, my console is covered for the next 2 years and it didnt cost me anything, what happens when you PS3 goes belly up 12 months and one day after you got it? after all thats when the majority of PS2 tendered to screw up with faulty drives and lenes (that slot loader is just asking for it), nothing happens cause sony wont want to give you a new one, will they?
