2K Games will publish Mafia 2, a sequel to the original Mafia title (that sold more than two million copies worldwide no less) that helped popularise the gangster genre.
Featuring a deep mobster-driven narrative and both behind-the-wheel and on-foot action, Mafia 2 "is the sequel fans have been clamoring for" says 2K. We bloody hope so.
The game is being developed by Illusion Softworks, developers of the original Mafia title, for next generation consoles and Games for Windows.
Like the original Mafia title, Mafia 2 immerses players in the mob underworld of a fictitious late 1940s-early 1950s scenario. We're told that we will become engaged in the game's cinematic Hollywood movie experience with strong, believable characters in a living, breathing city.
"As the original Mafia was a big success, we are excited to leverage the power of next generation console technology to create an all-new experience, while embracing the elements that resonated with the previous game's fans," said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K. "The 'wow' factor of Mafia 2 is definitely the benchmark-setting visual quality and action that you expect to see only in Hollywood movies."
Trivia fans might like to know we originally reported this in 2003!
The original Mafia was great (well.....except for your Mafia Buddies being a bit bullet-magnet for the purposes of furthering the story....)
It had a great atmosphere, an adult storyline which treated you with maturity and possibly one of the most unexpected endings i've ever witnessed (which i wont spoil here) that left me staring/screaming at my monitor....
A follow up has been on my wish list for years but my hopes were dashed when the company got shut down.
I hope that this can re-capture and improve what was great about the first Mafia and not be some dodgy Godfather/GTA knock off....
Well if Zone reported correctly in 2003 then its been 4/5 years in development already.
Looking forward to it but hoping that we dont have those 5mph cars again. Something a little more modified may be in order to avoid falling asleep at the keyboard
Yes! Yes! Thank you god! I've been waiting for this since the end credits rolled the first time round. The only thing is, I'm not too hot on it getting a simultaneous release for consoles - I just don't want them to make it less realistic for the sake of those with a shorter attention span - that includes you darthmelly! Half of what made Mafia so awesome was how amazingly immersive it was, which was probably mostly down to the realism of he driving and crime models.
Nah, my (old - one condition of living with me is that you like Mafia) house mates didn't get it. They couldn't understand why anyone would want to drive a taxi around a realistic city and not be allowed to crash or break the law; even after I explained that it was for the point of immersion and that it gets better very quickly. Heathens!
this looks like the game of me dreams - note the back of the bus says 'empire city transport' - so i guess were no longer in lost heaven, - so i guess the ity will be much closer to new york than chicago which the original was very like
just to add, gtaiv - whatever, godfather 2 - s**t off - mafia 2 - heartattack
I've been wishing for this for years now- it kept being kind of announced for ages, but now i know it's coming, i can't wait!
Also, I agree with ArchieUK, i hope the game isn't going to be dumbed for the cross console release- i loved the feel of the original, it was perfectly balanced to involve the player in the world. My worry is that it might end up being designed to cater to action junkies more.
visual quality and action that you expect to see only in Hollywood movies."
Sigh. One of the good bits of mafia was its reasonably understated, tactical combat, due to the fairly harsh health system. I do hope they dont make it all GTAish running into hordes of goons and being fine.
