Metroid Prime 3 outsells Bioshock

Proving that "hardcore" games can still sell on Wii, Metroid takes the top spot in US all-format chart
Nintendo's flagship shooter Metroid Prime 3: Corruption has debuted in the States with a bang, taking the top sales spot in the all-format chart and even outselling 2K's awesome Bioshock in its first week.

Metroid managed to shift over 400,000 copies in total, which must be big news for developers ogling at Nintendo's console and proves that traditional "hardcore" games can still sell on the home of Wii Sports and Cooking Mama.

With Wii releases thin on the ground, Metroid's unlikely to be contested at the top of the Wii sales chart until Super Mario Galaxy rolls around in a few months time. Wii Play meanwhile, is still sitting at the top of the charts in all three main territories.

Corruption hits UK shores in October and for those who can't wait (besides pulling out the import Wii) you can read our initial impressions with movies right here. It's wicked.

I don't remember either of the two previous Primes selling that well, but of course it's released under different circumstances. Those are surprisingly excellent sales figures.
deadmartyr on 4 Sep '07
Thank the gods for that.
Maybe this will prove to Nintendo & other developers they DO need to release traditional games on the Wii rather than relying on mini-game 1 go wonders that sell s**tloads but leave us core gamers cold.
mfnick on 4 Sep '07
They both look like stellar games, and I shall be getting both - well, I know Bioshock is out now, but my 360 is in for repairs...

Well well well, where's PS3 equivalent to these AAA titles? oh, they're 6 years away, aren't they.....

Sorry, couldn't resist!
ranaraptor on 4 Sep '07
But Wii Sports can't be bought separately, so by telling people not to buy it, you're telling people not to buy Wii's.

Who wrote this stuff?
totakeke on 4 Sep '07
I guess the reason it's selling so well is because there's basically bugger all else for proper gamers to play on Wii.
Dajmin on 4 Sep '07
total sales or just that week? as I'm sure most people would of already bought bioshock the week before (or whenever it was released)

both great games just a shame there's so much back tracking in MP3

What? Eh? Where's it say don't buy Wii Sports?!

Wii Sports is sold separately, but only in Japan, FYI.
Herr_Lowe on 4 Sep '07
of course its gonna sell well.

theres been bugger all on wii for months.

same with xbox, nothing for ages, then bioshock.

and same thing with ps3, nothing, then heavenly sword or something will mop up people cash.

it's the typical summer drought.
lmaolmao on 4 Sep '07
It's not much of a surprise to me this is selling so well and is beating Bioshock in the charts. 360 players have a much wider choice of great games at the moment, and the Wii's lineup is lucklustre in comparison, so Wii players will rightly jump on something of Metroid's quality.
funkyjack on 4 Sep '07
Well let's hope the suits see the figures and think that it's purely a demand for a more indepth experience, rather than a reaction to hype/the franchise/the Wii software drought.
boskersrevenge on 4 Sep '07
it shows xbox 360 is usa is dying. I'm sure ps3 will catch up.

Here here. Take note developers the wii needs more like this title and bloody quick if you wanna shake of the kiddy/mini game image thats hurting the console in the long run.

Good point funkyjack, Wii owners are starved for games at the moment so the sales figures are skewed.
Metroid is still racking up some good numbers though.
It seems to me that the Wii... dare I say it... is finally becoming... goodSurprised. I really want Super Paper Mario this month, then I also want Metroid and Mario Galaxy when they release. Maybe I'll actually switch on my Wii again after so many months (hopefully it still works). I'd say after all my Wii bashing lots of people reading this now are having an "I told you so" moment. i honestly dont believe that the 360 is dying anywhere.

but, i dont believe that its the best console out there either, a PC can (and will) do anything the 260 does (and probably better, slap in a joypad and youve got a high powered 360, woo >_>Wink

anyhow, back on topic and running from the inevitable flame posts that arrive on the tail of the above comment, yes the wii has seen a bit of...squalor in the area of truly good games, needs more like this (many many many more) all well and good having a console thats for "everybody, gamer and non-gamer alike", but...well theres not much for "the gamer" at this point in time is there.

I have no argument that the a very high powered PC can do anything the 360 or PS3 can but I have always felt that arcade style games on PC seem to play slightly strange. I think it it something to do with the human input controllers on consoles acting with twice the speed of the PC or something. I also hate buying games on the PC as it is nearly always a gamble on whether they work or not, consoles do not have this problem. PC games are however much cheaper but I prefer to get most games on the consoles as it is a rich seamless experience.

I agree. There is also less chance of crashes and glitches. Most PC games come out with major problems that you have to wait weeks for patches to sort out. At least you know it will work out of the box on consoles. The games maybe cheaper on the PC but keeping up with the hardware is a hugely expensive chore.
I envy the people that can though because i love lots of PC games. But I just cannot deal with the stress of keeping a PC in good, compatible & working order & I havent got the money to

the first metroid was a big hit selling over a million copies, the second bombed though because nintendo didn't advertise the game as much.

It's a bit unfair to compare sales of a game rated PEGI 12 with one rated at 18.
steven_h1 on 4 Sep '07
Im just thinking that this really doesnt mean anything, games dont stay number 1 for ever. And a game like bioshock after the initial release may drop in sales but the likely hood is that it will continue to sell through the life span of the console. Its not like it suddenly stopped selling all together.

I don't think the reason for this is games starvation. Of all the Wii owners here, I think all of us have been long looking forward to Metroid.

I think he meant about the fact more people can buy and play Metroid 3 due to it bein only a 12. Therefore parents can buy it their kids aswell as people between 12-18 can buy it themselves giving MP3 a bigger potential audience
mfnick on 4 Sep '07
These figures are incorrect.

It actually means that Metroid Prime 3's first week sales outsold Bioshock's second week sales.

We'll have the official figures when NPD is released in September. But these figures aren't confirmed or official in any capacity, and are just some guesstimates from Gamasutra based mainly on amazon sales.

Never understood the hype surrounding the Metroid Prime games. Bought the first one for my Gamecube and even though at the time I was humping anything Nintendo related, I still didn't enjoy Prime much. Was technically very nice, but the game felt quite empty, wasn't keen on all the back tracking and the combat was tedious.

Still, impressive sales figures and hopefull might mean a few more games on Wii being released witha bit more meat on their bones. I need a few more reasons on top of Smash Bros and Mario Galaxies, and I might even consider getting myself one.
monkey_puncher on 4 Sep '07
Well done nintendo, i'm sure mp3 will be a great game and beating the truly excellent bioshock into 2nd place is a great achievement.

Note to wildhook2 - you sir are an ass, now f'off and do your homework or something. If the 360 is dying in the USA then by that rational the PS3 is already dead. But of course neither are dead and long may it continue. Take you Sony bottomlicking somewhere else you gimp.

bioshock way over rated, a.i. just plain sucks and phyics are done better on hl2 engine. Check out dark messiah. It does freeze, fire and Psychokinesis a lot better, has the similar twists in the story, good graphics and more free to develope your character and is an actual better first person game.

That is exactly what I have been been trying to say for months, Mini games are great for people who have never played games before and its a great way to introduce new people to Wii and video games for that matter, so if Nintendo do succeed in selling hardcore games like Metroid Prime to casual that would be unprecedented and great news for Nintendo gamers everywhere and of course great for the gaming industry as a whole.

blarnak on 6 Sep '07
I still didn't enjoy Prime much. Was technically very nice, but the game felt quite empty

I think that Metroid Prime is meant to feel quite empty, to increase the sense of isolation and to make you concentrate on reading the data and taking in the atmosphere of the world and the attention to detail, including the amazing level design. It's only really the bosses who pose a massive threat.

I didn't like 'Echoes' half as much.

ste hicky on 7 Sep '07
Actually... when you compare first week sales of both titles, Bioshock beat the hell out of Prime 3. It's pretty silly to compare week 1 sales of Metroid Prime 3 to week 2 sales of Bioshock. If you do that then you should also point out that Bioshock has sold 500,000+ copies to date compared to 300,000 copies of Metroid Prime 3.

http://www.vgchartz.com/aweekly.php?date=39320

http://www.vgchartz.com/aweekly.php?date=39327

In the end, I suppose the NPD sales at the end of the month will tell the whole story and if Bioshock does indeed beat out Metroid Prime 3, it would be a major upset considering the Metroid Prime name and how gamers have been waiting years for it. Bioshock was virtually unheard of before a month ago.

I don't think it'd be too much of an upset... I'd rather a new franchise, set in one of the most original, atmospheric gaming worlds I've ever seen took the top spot than an established franchise. It'd go to show that people want something new, something different... And that can only be a good thing in terms of creativity.
