SCEE caught editing Halo 3 wiki

"It won't look any better than Halo 2," adds one naughty SCEE employee
Uh-Oh, it looks like Sony Computer Entertainment has another embarrassing PR situation on its hands; one of its employees has been caught editing the Halo 3 Wikipedia page.

As you can see by the cold, hard evidence on the right, the line "it won't look any better than Halo 2" was added to the entry by IP address 217.18.23.2, which leads straight to SCEE in Liverpool. Tsk, Tsk.

It's not the first company to be caught fiddling with Wikipedia entries either; last month EA was spotted tinkering with its own entry, removing references to the controversial business practices of founder Trip Hawkins.

Platform holders; for goodness sake go to a web café first.

I looked at the other edits made by the same guy and most were aimed at a certain Mike M., a gametester they employ. Aside from that, he refused to acknowledge any mention of someone being British and he called Kojima nuts. The guy is just wasting time, it is probably a tester.

This is absolutely hilarious. Makes you think it might have been done on purpose, though - what with the recent controversy over EA - to rile up the fanboys even more.

Ok, first up; I own a Playstation 3 as some of you may know, and I really think that given time it'll pull out some cracking titles.

However, being a gamer on the whole, I don't limit myself to one console.

I may get a Wii at some point (though I'm still undecided), and at the minute I really don't like the 360 as it doesn't really make me feel like it's an actual next gen console. It has a lot of ports for it anyway, but does have some pretty good exclusives (also, I can't wait for Fable 2, but I have a pc rigged up for gaming mainly, so I'll probably get it on that). However, Halo has always been an amazing series, and I have high hopes for Halo 3.

For an employee of Sony to go onto wikipedia and change the entry of a previously written article for Halo 3, it all seems very sad really.

I don't blame Sony on the whole for this, but it doesn't give them a very good name when their employee's are doing such sad and trivial things, such as this.

Tut tut.

True, but everybody is doing it so everybody gets a bad name. Microsoft did it, Apple did it, EA did it, Sony Onliny Entertainment did it 'but nobody cares about that one' and even Nintendo did it. It has to be said EA was the only company with enough balls to admit it.

Whilst funny, it still makes Sony look they smack of desperation.

M$ are probably glad that Sony feel the need to try and downplay their products. It's the sure sign of a company that is getting well and truly beaten.

Totally agree.
Sony have fallen from grace. They were in total dominance of the console market for over 10 years and they now find themselves in last position and have resorted to such desperate measures. Surely any PS3 owner must feel like this at the moment > Embarassed

Ok 1st things 1st. I own a ps1 and an original xbox. No ps3 or 360

I got halo 1 on pc and found the level design boring. The story was ok but the levels were repetitive in my opinion. The guns are naff aswell - like firing paint.

Then when halo 2 arrived I thought Id give it a whirl, but again, its an ok story but level design and weapons could be better.
And the multiplayer? Well theres no coop. Its only capture the flag or death match/ team vs team. Nothing new there.

After finishing Halo 2 I kind of felt it was a game that was hyped up more than anything. There are better games on xbox than that. But now here comes Halo 3, I hope the designers have changed things - nameley the level design. It would be good to finish the story, but then there are many games that are like that.
Halo 1 and Halo 2 were over-hyped in my opinion, but then it is just MY opinion..
Oh and level 1 of Halo1 was awesome but then it kind of went downhill playing through a level then going back the way I came later on.

Everything's been blown completely out of proportion here.... Some guy was just trying to get under peoples' skin and he succeeded - maybe he just likes rising people like that and maybe he even likes Halo and was taking the p**s! It's no big deal.

If you ask me, it seems the donkey could be a M$ paid post-grad trying to wreak havoc. Again that's speculation - but hell why not speculate, everyoone seems to be doing it!

And hell Halo 2 was mediocre - just run through the level that's how I completed it. Who cares about Halo 3. Fighting munchkins and yes captn chief sirr! So cheesy and last gen. I feel for the Halo 2 marketing last time but this time no captn chief sir, no! Bioshock is way better.

Yeah but that was tame compared to this. This is unsporting behaviour, its an attempt to sabotage the game that Sony know will bury them as far as this year goes. They didn't like Gears of War last year and now Halo 3 is going to be even more popular, sell a bucket load of 360's, whether people think its over hyped or not, its going to sell a lot this year end and over Christmas.

This on the other hand is nothing to be laughing about, especially for Sony. If they like it or not, their employee's are responsible for the image of the company and they haven't done Sony any favours with this little event.

Are you ignorant or just a plain fool? How is this any worse? A tiny edit on a wikipedia page is "nothing to be laughing about" but sending crates of beer, text messages, and boats with messages such as: "You were late Sony" and "For the price of a PS3 you can buy this amount of beer and a 360" on the launch night is "harmless fun"?

You fanboys really need to step out of the dark. Neither stunt is particularly worse than another - if you were to say one is "bad" it would have to be the Microsoft one, since that was on a mass scale compared to 1 single employee adding 1 single sentence to a Wikipedia page (about 1 360 game). Seriously. If anyone has a problem with this edit, you need to find a shop that sells a sense of humour. You talk as if Halo 3 is the game that will decide whether the 360 will die on its bottom or be the victor of the console war. It's one game!
Taralla on 5 Sep '07
I think what MS did with the boat was very funny as it was a plain publicity stunt.
What the Sony employee did was just plain sad and pathetic as it is not a stunt for laughs but a blatant attack against their competitor, weather Sony told him to do or not I don't really care as I live in the country where dumb ass politicians site wikipedia as a good source of information for college and school kids LaughingLaughingLaughingLaughing

I NEVER use or trust wiki as it's a total waste of time, non of the information is accurate or verified as so, anyone who trusts what it say's needs some educting.

As an amployee you are a representative of your company and if you go around slagging competitors off or you get caught out changing wiki entries then it is going to reflect very badly on the company for which you work. I personally feel that sony are going further and further down a slippery slope as mistake after mistake and Hidden rootkits etc are causing a deep mistrust of Sony which is only deepened by their lame excuses ("we did not know about the rootkit that we were warned about by security companies"Wink. Now it is entirely possible that this employee acted on his own but it is also possible that he was told to do it by his bosses. Either ends up making sony look even worse than they already do. Also I know that other companies have been caught updating wikipedia but I am pretty sure that they have all been caught updating their own entries and not their competitors.

Yes because say it wouldn't look better than Halo 2 on the Wikipedia page is really going to affect Halo 3's popularity in any way shape or form.

Also it was an employee not the company. I am sure if Sony really wanted to do something like that they would cover their tracks better. I am going to edit the Wikipedia page for the 360 saying it is 'probably going to break after about an hour', keep your eyes open for a headline saying UK Civil Service slags off 360.....

I very much doubt that a compny, who knows that this kind of stuff can be tracked, would send word from on high down to a lowley employee, in Liverpool of all places, to change a couple of words on a wiki knowing it will have absolutely ZERO effect on the games sales or it's view by the gaming public.
I think you know as well as I do that this is the work of some bored 'joker' on his dinner hour thniking it would be a laugh... but it suits a lot of people better if they convince themselves that it's an official attack of Pearl Harbor stature so it gives them one more unneeded rock to throw at Sony.

I am not saying it is an order from the top but it could have been an order from above the employee involved. I would also argue that Sony are perfectly capable of making a stupid decision like this. Remember this is the same company that put a rootkit on many computers then denied it then admitted it although they denied knowing anything about it before it was released then it came out that they did know about it, they also have now said that they did not know about the new Microvault rootkit although a security company told them that it was a bad idea months ago! They are also the same company that shut down the best games store on the net by throwing so many court cases at it that the store could not afford to fight them all (please note that the store in question were never proven guilty, they just could not afford to go to court for so many cases). There are many more anti-trust stories from Sony which I could probably go on for pages with. And one other thing, you do not know if this was not an order from above as much as I and everyone else on here does not know that it was just a lone employee. But I think we can all agree that this is damaging for sony again.

It's just a silly little swipe at a game Sony can't compete with is all. Don't mean nothing! It certainly won't put me off Halo 3 as I'm one of the few people who is actually blessed with eyes- and I can tell merely by looking at the game that it looks better than Halo 2.

I must also say Sony are completely dumb. Surely they must realise that people would much rather have good gameplay over graphics?
Good example is Heavenly Sword. Amazing graphics, crap game. Same with Lair...
Just look at Metroid Prime 3. Graphics aren't exactly mind blowing but it has its own style and the gameplay is rock solid. Thats what people want.

When looking to buy a console, reading all the negative press about Sony really doesn't help sway you towards PS3...
So to answer your question, people who are looking to buy a console will obviously care about the fact we have yet another negative article about Sony.

Actually, it really doesn't matter. People who want to get a PS3 will still get a PS3, those who don't just won't.

i agree if this bothers people that much they shouldnt bother with games at all.

I wouldn't say thats true...
Many of my friends are PS2 owners wanting to upgrade to PS3 but the price, lack of games and bad press for Sony is tempting them to opt for a 360 instead.
So to put it simply, they want a PS3 but are having to reconsider.

Actually, it does matter. You are right in saying that those who want a PS3 will go and buy one anyway and those who don't, wont....but you are discounting the biggest proportion of people...those who haven't made their made up and are sitting on the fence.

A single issue like this won't bother many people at all, but the continued dishonesty, lies, hype, broken promises and lack of good games has a big effect - do I really need to tell you this? Just look at sales of the PS3 and specifically the amount of games that are selling, it speaks for itself, just look at how dominant the PS2 was and just look at the sad story of the PS3 and its launch in numerous regions. You cannot blame it on the competition as the PS2 was up against great systems during its reign.

I thinks its just some fan boy who happens to work for Sony. can't really pin it on sony as a marketing ploy.
besides, i would question anything that gets posted on Wiki as anyone could post anything.
